CHAPTER 1 : INTRODUCTION
Industrial Training module is a main component in the learning curriculum for
Polytechnic of the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE). Industrial training is
one of the compulsory courses for every polytechnic student under the
Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) Malaysia. Every student bounds to be
involved in industrial training for one whole semester in order for him or her to
get his or her diploma certificate.
1.1 Preliminary
The industrial training was carried out at a firm or an organization
whether the students choose it or it is given to them for one whole semestar.
The main purpose of the industrial training is to produce graduates who are
ready and capable to face their profession academically or non-academically
with a high professionalism appearance.

Other than that, the industrial training exposes the students about the
real situation of the working class citizen. The industrial training also helps in
developing social skills in the students.
1.2 Industrial Training Objective
1.2.1 To expose the students to the real life working experience and
expanding the knowledge in their specific field.
i. Students will further learn about their real life profession.
They will also learn what they need to do in order to
finish their works. This will prepare the students so that
they will easily fit in and fulfill the demands of their
profession after they finish their course.
1.2.2 To make use of the theory and learned in the polytechnic.
i. Students are only exposed to the basic theory and
needed in the fields of their own. These theory and were
mainly according to the books. With the industrial training
in place, students will experience real life situation in the
field. This will make the students use their knowledge in
order to get their works done.

1.2.3 To produce trustworthy workers with high responsibility and
able to cooperate with other staffs.
i. All tasks given by the supervisor must be completed with
a sense of trustworthy and full responsibility. This attitude
very important to ensure all business entrusted to
students were carried out flawlessly. Also, it train the
students to be honest not only to themselves but others
as well.
1.2.4. Enhance student’s confidence at end of the training.
ii. When the industrial training students are exposed to a
variety of problems and had to face it. With the
experience learned through industrial training , the
students will be more confidence both in learning and
working. High spirit and skills to overcome the problems
faced certainly create a strong confidence in the
students.
1.2.5. Learn to interact with superior officers.
i. In this training, students get the opportunity to interact
with upper management such as engineer, director and
consultant and others. With this opportunity, student will
be able to associate and discuss with them in a closer
way. This opportunity will not come without the

implication of industrial training. This opportunity should
be used well by the students to learn more.
1.2.6 Increase the interest and curiosity.
i. There will be many new things that students will face
during the period of the industrial training . These events
will enhance the curiosity in the students. Other than
that, the real life exposure given to the students will also
increase the interest of the students towards their fields
of studies.
1.3 Report Objectives
1.3.1 The objectives of the report enables the students :
i. To provide a work document effectively.
ii. To produce students that are responsible for their work
by providing enough evidential documents that related to
work.
iii. To expose the students on how to provide a proper
document.
iv. To build self-confidence in the student while providing
the document.
v. To complete the prerequisite for the student to pass
industrial training Polytechnic KPTM.

1.4 Importance of Industrial Training
1.4.1 Industrial training are important to the students in many
aspects. This is because this module was created to give
benefit to students, especially students who take up studies in
polytechnic KPTM. Among the importance is:
i. To produce employees that are fully disciplined after they
have graduated from the polytechnic KPTM. This can be
seen through the students who take part in the industrial
training, they are not only bound to the rules set by the
polytechnic but also rules fixed by the organization that
students take their industrial training at.
ii. To produce employees that are skillful and ready to work
when they take their first step to the working world. This
is because by involving in certain industrial training at the
organization given to them, student will be more skillful in
carrying out a job after they were explained on how to do
the job by a more experienced coworker.
iii. Student who went through industrial training will be more
mature in conducting the works given to them.
iv. Students will also be more knowledgeable and
understanding about matters related to their field of
study, after the practical lessons.

2.2 Company Background
PNFL are Chartered Quantity Surveyors (member of Royal Institution
of Chartered Surveyors,UK) established way back in 1972 as Juruukur
Bahan Berakan. The company was subsequently reincorporated as an
unlimited company under the name of Nik Farid Dan Loh Sdn. in 1976. To
move in line with the prevailing market and planned business development,
the company was restructured and renamed as Perunding NFL Sdn. Bhd.
(PNFL) in December 1994. There are one of the leading Consulting and
Chartered Quantity Surveyors in Malaysia, providing Quantity Surveying and
Project Cost Management Consultancy Services.
PNFL has experience in various types of construction works and has
been a recognized name in the Malaysia construction industry for decades.
PNFL are currently operating from offices in Kuala Lumpur (HQ) , Kuala
Terengganu (Branch Office) and Johor Bahru (Branch Office).
PNFL have served many Clients ranging from Government, Semi-
Government and Statutory Bodies to private and public companies,
partnerships and individual Clients from the inception up to the completion of
building and civil engineering works.
PNFL has also planned, established, documented, implemented and
maintained a Quanlity Management System (QMS) based on the
International Standard, MS:ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System.

i) Executive Chairman
DATO' HAJI NIK FARID KAMIL started his career in Quantity Surveying
in 1970 as a lecturer at the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) for three
years and in 1972 he became a co-founder of Perunding NFL Sdn.
Bhd., formerly known as Nik Farid Dan Loh Sdn. and Jurukur Bahan
BERAKAN where Dato' Haji Nik Farid Kamil has led the company's
overall development since inception. He has been involved in major
national and international projects including the Dayabumi & GPO HQ
(JV), Heritage Park Putra Jaya, Kompleks Dataran Maybank, Taman
Teknologi Malaysia, Bangunan Dewan Undangan Negeri Terengganu
and Kedah, KLIA Mosque, Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia
Cheras, KLIA Administration Block And Passenger Terminal Complex as
(JV with other Q.S. firms), Maldives Mosque etc.

ii) Managing Director
ABDUL MANAP ABDULLAH started his career as a Quantity Surveyor
in 1973 and became a Director of the company in 1982. Prior to joining
Perunding NFL Sdn. Bhd., he was a lecturer at Universiti Teknologi
MARA (UiTM) for seven (7) years. His involvement in projects include
EON HQ Shah Alam, Menara ESSO Office (KLCC), Southern Bank HQ,
Plaza Damansara (SPPK), Pan Pacific Hotel at KLIA, Petrosains and
Pertonas Gallery At KLCC, ISTAC and Putrajaya projects. He is the
Managing Director entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the
overall performance of the company and his other portfolio includes
Finance and Human Resource if the company.
iii) Executive Director
CHUA SEOW KWANG began his career as a Quantity Surveyor in 1977
with Public Works Department (JKR) before joining the company in 1980.
In 1985 he was appointed Associate Director and became a Director in
1989. His projects involvement include Menara IMC, Phileo Avenue,
Kuantan Parade, One Ampang Avenue Condominium and Bangi Heights
residential development. He has also nurtured the company's Computer
and ICT capabilities. Chua Seow Kwang has led the company to be on
the international front by forming strategic alliances with overseas
associates in the Philippines, Hong Kong and Vietnam. He is the
Executive Director in charge of Planning and Production with added
responsibilities for Business Development.

iv) Director
Ms TEH SIEW LEONG initially joined the company as an Assistant
Quantity Surveyor and was promoted to Quantity Surveyor in 1990 upon
successful completion of RICS Final Examinations and appointed as
Associate Director in September 2000 and a Director in September 2003.
SL Teh has been involved in commercial and residential development
projects including Base Ammunition Terminal, Refurbishment Works to
Carcosa / Istana, Institutions (QS Advisory for Multi-Media University),
Project Cost Audit for Ampang Hospital including an international project
Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation - Hong Kong West Rail Package
CC203 - CC300 (Tender Procurement). She is the Quality Management
Representative (QMR) for the company.
v) Director
SR ABDUL HALIM ROSMAN started his career as a Quantity Surveyor
at PNFL in 1994. He was appointed as an Associate Director in
September 2003 and become a Director of the company in April
2004.Major projects that he was directly involved include Menara Polo
Condominium, PNB Darby Park Service Apartment, Common Utility
Tunnel (C.U.T), Putrajaya Heritage Park Hotel, Putra Jaya Maritime
Discovery Centre and Watersport Facilities at Putrajaya.He is the Quality
Manager for the company to oversee the full implementations, compliace
and improvement of the ISO 9001:2000 system's requirements and also
responsible for staff training.

2.4 Company Services / Company Activities
2.4.1 Basic Services
i) Feasibility Studies :
Advise on the returns from a development taking into
consideration the initial and running cost.
ii) Preliminary Estimates & Cost Plans :
Work out the approximate costs of a project for
budget control.
iii) Tender Documents :
Prepare Bills of Quantities and Specifications for
calling competitive tenders. (Bills of Quantities are
complete breakdown of a building into the basic
materials and labor contents).
iv) Tendering and Contractual Procedures :
Recommend the most suitable method of tendering
and advise on contractual procedures.
v) Recommendation of Contractors :
Evaluation of tender and Recommend to the
contractor to be considered for acceptance after
evaluation of tenders received.
vi) Cash Flow :
Prepare projected monthly expenditure for client's
budgeting.

vii) Interim Valuation :
Certify the value of works done by contractor so that
appropriate payments may be made progressively.
viii) Financial Statements :
Prepare statements at periodic intervals to indicate
the anticipated final cost of the project.
ix) Cost Control :
Cost check on all Variations proposed during the
construction period to avoid over expenditure.
x) Final Accounts :
Assess the amount of variations from the original
tender and prepare the Final Statement of Accounts.

i) Life Cycle Costings and Studies on economics of alternative
designs.
ii) Valuation / Auditing of Contractual Claims of or for fire
damaged buildings.
iii) Auditing of Contracts and their related budget and

2.5 Project Experience
PNFL has experience in various types of construction works and has been a
recognized name in the Malaysia construction industry for decades. PNFL

CHAPTER 3 : WEEKLY SUMMARY
In undergoing industrial training, students are disclosed with a whole lot of
new things. Apart from practicing what we had learnt in polytechnic, students
also get the chance to experience it themselves by doing the assignments
given to them according to their respective course. By doing so, students are
able to further increase their confidence upon entering the working world. On
the other hand, student had to obey every rule of the firm and need to on
time. This could educate the students to be more disciplined and make the
students to be familiar with working hours when they go for work later.

3.1 Following is the summary of all the activity carried out during training
period weekly :
Week 1
(17th December – 21st December 20012)
1. Reporting in for industrial training, Perunding NFL Sdn Bhd at 8.30
am.
2. Meet with Encik Zulkarnain, who is a senior contract manager in
Perunding NFL Sdn Bhd.
3. He explains about PNFL Sdn Bhd and explain on some of the
currents projects that are organized by the firm.
4. Introduced to all of the Perunding NFL Sdn Bhd staff.
5. We were requested to see Pn Nur Maya. She explains on the rules
that need to be obeyed in the firm including the dress code.
6. Assigned to our first task which is to update all the drawings
according to their specification.
7. Check some files and need to identify each files content.
8. We were requested to do some taking off for construction drawing
and contract drawing.
9. we were given the task to differentiate each drawing to identify
addition or rejection that happens in every drawing given to us.

Industrial Training Objectives and Importance

  • 1. 1 CHAPTER 1 : INTRODUCTION Industrial Training module is a main component in the learning curriculum for Polytechnic of the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE). Industrial training is one of the compulsory courses for every polytechnic student under the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) Malaysia. Every student bounds to be involved in industrial training for one whole semester in order for him or her to get his or her diploma certificate. 1.1 Preliminary The industrial training was carried out at a firm or an organization whether the students choose it or it is given to them for one whole semestar. The main purpose of the industrial training is to produce graduates who are ready and capable to face their profession academically or non-academically with a high professionalism appearance.
  • 2. 2 Other than that, the industrial training exposes the students about the real situation of the working class citizen. The industrial training also helps in developing social skills in the students. 1.2 Industrial Training Objective 1.2.1 To expose the students to the real life working experience and expanding the knowledge in their specific field. i. Students will further learn about their real life profession. They will also learn what they need to do in order to finish their works. This will prepare the students so that they will easily fit in and fulfill the demands of their profession after they finish their course. 1.2.2 To make use of the theory and learned in the polytechnic. i. Students are only exposed to the basic theory and needed in the fields of their own. These theory and were mainly according to the books. With the industrial training in place, students will experience real life situation in the field. This will make the students use their knowledge in order to get their works done.
  • 3. 3 1.2.3 To produce trustworthy workers with high responsibility and able to cooperate with other staffs. i. All tasks given by the supervisor must be completed with a sense of trustworthy and full responsibility. This attitude very important to ensure all business entrusted to students were carried out flawlessly. Also, it train the students to be honest not only to themselves but others as well. 1.2.4. Enhance student’s confidence at end of the training. ii. When the industrial training students are exposed to a variety of problems and had to face it. With the experience learned through industrial training , the students will be more confidence both in learning and working. High spirit and skills to overcome the problems faced certainly create a strong confidence in the students. 1.2.5. Learn to interact with superior officers. i. In this training, students get the opportunity to interact with upper management such as engineer, director and consultant and others. With this opportunity, student will be able to associate and discuss with them in a closer way. This opportunity will not come without the
  • 4. 4 implication of industrial training. This opportunity should be used well by the students to learn more. 1.2.6 Increase the interest and curiosity. i. There will be many new things that students will face during the period of the industrial training . These events will enhance the curiosity in the students. Other than that, the real life exposure given to the students will also increase the interest of the students towards their fields of studies. 1.3 Report Objectives 1.3.1 The objectives of the report enables the students : i. To provide a work document effectively. ii. To produce students that are responsible for their work by providing enough evidential documents that related to work. iii. To expose the students on how to provide a proper document. iv. To build self-confidence in the student while providing the document. v. To complete the prerequisite for the student to pass industrial training Polytechnic KPTM.
  • 5. 5 1.4 Importance of Industrial Training 1.4.1 Industrial training are important to the students in many aspects. This is because this module was created to give benefit to students, especially students who take up studies in polytechnic KPTM. Among the importance is: i. To produce employees that are fully disciplined after they have graduated from the polytechnic KPTM. This can be seen through the students who take part in the industrial training, they are not only bound to the rules set by the polytechnic but also rules fixed by the organization that students take their industrial training at. ii. To produce employees that are skillful and ready to work when they take their first step to the working world. This is because by involving in certain industrial training at the organization given to them, student will be more skillful in carrying out a job after they were explained on how to do the job by a more experienced coworker. iii. Student who went through industrial training will be more mature in conducting the works given to them. iv. Students will also be more knowledgeable and understanding about matters related to their field of study, after the practical lessons.

Sc) Table 2.3.1 - Board Member List i) Executive Chairman DATO' HAJI NIK FARID KAMIL started his career in Quantity Surveying in 1970 as a lecturer at the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) for three years and in 1972 he became a co-founder of Perunding NFL Sdn. Bhd., formerly known as Nik Farid Dan Loh Sdn. and Jurukur Bahan BERAKAN where Dato' Haji Nik Farid Kamil has led the company's overall development since inception. He has been involved in major national and international projects including the Dayabumi & GPO HQ (JV), Heritage Park Putra Jaya, Kompleks Dataran Maybank, Taman Teknologi Malaysia, Bangunan Dewan Undangan Negeri Terengganu and Kedah, KLIA Mosque, Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Cheras, KLIA Administration Block And Passenger Terminal Complex as (JV with other Q.S. firms), Maldives Mosque etc.
  • 10. 10 ii) Managing Director ABDUL MANAP ABDULLAH started his career as a Quantity Surveyor in 1973 and became a Director of the company in 1982. Prior to joining Perunding NFL Sdn. Bhd., he was a lecturer at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) for seven (7) years. His involvement in projects include EON HQ Shah Alam, Menara ESSO Office (KLCC), Southern Bank HQ, Plaza Damansara (SPPK), Pan Pacific Hotel at KLIA, Petrosains and Pertonas Gallery At KLCC, ISTAC and Putrajaya projects. He is the Managing Director entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the overall performance of the company and his other portfolio includes Finance and Human Resource if the company. iii) Executive Director CHUA SEOW KWANG began his career as a Quantity Surveyor in 1977 with Public Works Department (JKR) before joining the company in 1980. In 1985 he was appointed Associate Director and became a Director in 1989. His projects involvement include Menara IMC, Phileo Avenue, Kuantan Parade, One Ampang Avenue Condominium and Bangi Heights residential development. He has also nurtured the company's Computer and ICT capabilities. Chua Seow Kwang has led the company to be on the international front by forming strategic alliances with overseas associates in the Philippines, Hong Kong and Vietnam. He is the Executive Director in charge of Planning and Production with added responsibilities for Business Development.
  • 11. 11 iv) Director Ms TEH SIEW LEONG initially joined the company as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor and was promoted to Quantity Surveyor in 1990 upon successful completion of RICS Final Examinations and appointed as Associate Director in September 2000 and a Director in September 2003. SL Teh has been involved in commercial and residential development projects including Base Ammunition Terminal, Refurbishment Works to Carcosa / Istana, Institutions (QS Advisory for Multi-Media University), Project Cost Audit for Ampang Hospital including an international project Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation - Hong Kong West Rail Package CC203 - CC300 (Tender Procurement). She is the Quality Management Representative (QMR) for the company. v) Director SR ABDUL HALIM ROSMAN started his career as a Quantity Surveyor at PNFL in 1994. He was appointed as an Associate Director in September 2003 and become a Director of the company in April 2004.Major projects that he was directly involved include Menara Polo Condominium, PNB Darby Park Service Apartment, Common Utility Tunnel (C.U.T), Putrajaya Heritage Park Hotel, Putra Jaya Maritime Discovery Centre and Watersport Facilities at Putrajaya.He is the Quality Manager for the company to oversee the full implementations, compliace and improvement of the ISO 9001:2000 system's requirements and also responsible for staff training.
  • 12. 12 2.4 Company Services / Company Activities 2.4.1 Basic Services i) Feasibility Studies : Advise on the returns from a development taking into consideration the initial and running cost. ii) Preliminary Estimates & Cost Plans : Work out the approximate costs of a project for budget control. iii) Tender Documents : Prepare Bills of Quantities and Specifications for calling competitive tenders. (Bills of Quantities are complete breakdown of a building into the basic materials and labor contents). iv) Tendering and Contractual Procedures : Recommend the most suitable method of tendering and advise on contractual procedures. v) Recommendation of Contractors : Evaluation of tender and Recommend to the contractor to be considered for acceptance after evaluation of tenders received. vi) Cash Flow : Prepare projected monthly expenditure for client's budgeting.

  • 19. 19 CHAPTER 3 : WEEKLY SUMMARY In undergoing industrial training, students are disclosed with a whole lot of new things. Apart from practicing what we had learnt in polytechnic, students also get the chance to experience it themselves by doing the assignments given to them according to their respective course. By doing so, students are able to further increase their confidence upon entering the working world. On the other hand, student had to obey every rule of the firm and need to on time. This could educate the students to be more disciplined and make the students to be familiar with working hours when they go for work later.
  • 20. 20 3.1 Following is the summary of all the activity carried out during training period weekly : Week 1 (17th December – 21st December 20012) 1. Reporting in for industrial training, Perunding NFL Sdn Bhd at 8.30 am. 2. Meet with Encik Zulkarnain, who is a senior contract manager in Perunding NFL Sdn Bhd. 3. He explains about PNFL Sdn Bhd and explain on some of the currents projects that are organized by the firm. 4. Introduced to all of the Perunding NFL Sdn Bhd staff. 5. We were requested to see Pn Nur Maya. She explains on the rules that need to be obeyed in the firm including the dress code. 6. Assigned to our first task which is to update all the drawings according to their specification. 7. Check some files and need to identify each files content. 8. We were requested to do some taking off for construction drawing and contract drawing. 9. we were given the task to differentiate each drawing to identify addition or rejection that happens in every drawing given to us.
