students make up roughly 14 percent of the
student body.
More than 21,000 undergraduate and

MAKING HISTORY:
The 2015 Pac-12 China Game
The Pac-12 became the first U.S. sports league, collegiate or professional, to host a regular
season contest in China. The game also proved to be a seminal educational exchange
for student-athletes and offered a vehicle for Pac-12 member institutions to deepen their
academic ties with China.
The game exposed the Chinese to new aspects of American sports culture, sparked
interest in and awareness of the Pac-12 and collegiate sports, and spawned new
investment in developing a Chinese college sports system.
	
	 ALIBABA PARTNERSHIP:
The Pac-12’s partnership with Chinese-based online commerce leader Alibaba included
a private round table discussion with founder Jack Ma, innovative digital marketing
campaign, grassroots outreach, and game distribution on Alibaba’s Youku Tudou.
The Pac-12 is the first sports property to partner with Alibaba in such a deeply
integrated manner.
ALIBABA CAMPUS EXPERIENCE:
Student-athletes completed an educational seminar on Chinese business at the
Alibaba Group’s campus in Hangzhou. The seminar focused on societal, cultural,
and business trends taking place across China.
	
CULTURAL ACTIVITIES:
The student-athletes and university delegations participated in a series of
cultural activities in Hangzhou and Shanghai, including visits to ancient temples
and city landmarks, as well as an evening city tour on the Huangpu River.
	
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:
The Washington men’s basketball team participated in a clinic and
scrimmage with Special Olympics athletes from the Shanghai Pudong
Special Education School.
	
FULL U.S. COLLEGE BASKETBALL EXPERIENCE:
The Pac-12 China Game featured the authentic “Pac-12 experience”
complete with elite competition, passionate alumni, cheerleaders,
mascots, and in-game entertainment.
	
HIGH-LEVEL SUPPORT:
Former NBA star Yao Ming, Alibaba Group CEO Jack Ma, UCLA
Legend Bill Walton, and University of Washington President Ana
Mari Cauce actively participated throughout the week of events.
MEDIA COVERAGE:
The Pac-12 China Game attracted national media coverage in
China, including top Chinese TV segments, high profile print
media stories, and influential Chinese digital articles.

LE SPORTS PARTNERSHIP:
The Pac-12 has an exclusive two-year partnership with
LeSports, China’s leading digital sports platform, to live
stream more than 250 sporting events across four Pac-12
sports, including football and men’s basketball, through
the 2016-17 academic year. Le Sports has a monthly
viewership of more than 70 million people per month.
YOUTUBE AND EVERSPORT PARTNERSHIP:
Through partnerships with EverSport and YouTube, Pac-12
Networks content is available 24 hours a day in more than
200 countries across every platform.
PAC-12 CHINA GAME:
Through its partnership with Alibaba, the Pac-12 China
Game will be distributed across multiple digital and linear
channels in Mainland China. In addition the game will be
broadcast live in the U.S. on ESPN.

ALL-STAR WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
CHINA TOUR:
In June 2016, a Pac-12 All-Star women’s volleyball
team travels to China to play against Chinese
competition in Beijing, Nanjing, and Shanghai,
combining elite athletics with cultural and
educational events.
CAL FOOTBALL, SYDNEY CUP:
In August 2016, Cal’s football team battles Hawaii
in Sydney, marking the first college football regular
season game ever played in Australia.
2016 PAC-12 CHINA GAME:
Stanford and Harvard tip off the 2016-17 regular
season in Shanghai for the second annual Pac-12
China Game presented by Alibaba.
CHINESE SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE:
The Pac-12 continues to build its presence in China
via social media accounts like Weibo and WeChat.
During the week of the Pac-12 China Game, 8 million
people viewed Pac-12 content on these platforms,
and more than 100 pieces of content were created
to inform the Chinese about the Pac-12’s events
in China.

ACADEMIC MARKETING, PR & SOCIAL
FEDERATION OF UNIVERSITY SPORTS OF
CHINA (FUSC) PARTNERSHIP:
Headquartered in Beijing under China’s Ministry
of Education, the Federation of University Sports of
China (FUSC) is the solely authorized national
organization for university sports. Since 2011, the
Pac-12 and FUSC have collaborated on various
initiatives to advance the integration of sports and
education in China.
COACHING EDUCATION PROGRAM:
The Pac-12, along with the Chinese Scholarship
Council and the FUSC, has developed a three-month
training platform for Chinese coaches to study
at Pac-12 universities. Coaches from the University
of Utah and Arizona State University will train
200 Chinese coaches on strategies and techniques
in men and women’s basketball, track & field,
swimming, and cheerleading.
SPORTS AND EDUCATION SUMMIT, SHANGHAI:
Each year, the Pac-12 and FUSC facilitate discussions
about the challenges and opportunities presented
by combining sports and education both in the U.S.
and China. The events feature panel discussions,
speeches, and case studies by officials from Pac-12
and Shanghai universities, the FUSC, and the
Chinese Ministry of Education, as well as Yao Ming
and Bill Walton.
