How the Program Works
The GEL report also includes an estimate of how
much money you may expect to save each month in
reduced energy costs when you follow the report
recommendations. You and your lender may use the
estimate of monthly energy savings to create a loan
package in which the money saved each month from
lowerenergyandwaterbillscoverstheloanpayment.
(Please note that individual results will vary.
Participating GEL lenders will not require
that you use the loan proceeds as
recommended. GEL cannot guarantee that
your energy savings will offset your loan
payments, even if you follow the
recommendations for use of the loan

Step 1 — Apply for a Green
EnergyLoanwithaparticipatinglender.
Green Energy Loan:
Step 2 — Provide your
utility and water bill information for the past year
duringatelephoneintakeinterview.
Step 3 — Schedule an
energy audit for your home with a GEL auditor.
You may also be invited to schedule an outdoor
water-use audit with the Sonoma County Water
Agency, if your water bill indicates your home may
benefit from water-saving irrigation or drought-
tolerantlandscaping.
Step 4 — The
energy savings opportunities for
your home will be listed in order of
biggest-bang-for-the-buck. Your
report will also include resources for
finding reputable, experienced
contractors to perform the recommended
upgrade.
Step 5 — When you have
completed your energy efficiency retrofit, you send
GEL a copy of the signed work release from the
contractorshowingthecompletedupgradetasks.
Step 6 —
The energy savings you achieve with your energy
efficiency retrofit will be calculated from your pre–
and post-retrofit utility bills and used to document
local progress toward the goal of lowering annual
countywide greenhouse gas emissions to 25
percentbelow1990levelsby2015.
Step 7 —
When the successful completion of your energy
efficiency retrofit has been confirmed, your lender
will give you a colorful sticker to display in your
window proclaiming your home as a
