2. About CSUF
• With 37,000 students, the largest campus in
the 23-campus Cal State system
• Predominantly undergraduate and masterslevel programs
3. About collecting at Pollak Library
• Goal to provide as much content electronically
as possible
• Book budget decreased 77% from 2006/07 to
2012/13
4. About ebooks at Pollak Library
• Successful DDA plan with EBL in place since
2010
• Merged with YBP print approval plan in 2011
• Slipped titles that were simultaneously
available as ebooks added to DDA pool
• 4 STLs, then auto-purchase
• Titles profiled as books continued to be sent in
print
5. Approval plan revision for 2013/2014
• Analyzed 2011/2012 print approval receipts
and found that 33% had been simultaneously
available as ebooks
• Had received a lot of textbooks
6. Obvious approval profile changes
• Remove all textbooks
• Move to e-preferred
Would this save us any money?
7. Assessment of past approval receipts
If all of the print approval books that arrived in
2011/2012 had been DDA ebooks in the Library
catalog, would they have been purchased by
one year later?
NO
(but seven of them would have been)
8. The DDA-preferred approval plan
• All titles available as ebooks, whether profiled
as books or slips, would be added to the DDA
pool
• YBP had no system in place for this
14. Conclusion
• Working so far, but will need to monitor longterm effects
– Will it cost more in the long run?
• Glad to be providing more diverse access
within our limited budget
