Overview
of
Pakistan’s Educational System
Pakistan: Education Overview
Former British Colony:
• Following UK educational system
• Primary (Ages: 3-10)
• High (Ages: 11-15)
• Intermediate (Ages: 16-18)
• University (Ages: 19 onwards)
• Official Language: Urdu + English
Literacy rates of 10 year olds and above are:
• 71% in urban areas
• 49% in rural areas
• 85% overall rate target by 2015
• 16.8% for people age 25 and above (with secondary education)
124 Universities serving 51.78 million student population:
• Need for books and educational material
• 20 million primary & High school children in need of English literacy material +
teachers + school and classroom modernization
• International qualifications and courses collaboration between Pakistani + foreign
institutes is highly desired, due to overseas government visa restrictions
Ministry of Education Priorities:
• Widen Access to education
• Improve Quality of education 4
Split Between State & Private Education:
• Educational Institutes:
• 72% are State
• 28% are Private
• Students Attend:
• 34% State Institutes
• 66% Private Institutes
• Analysis & Opportunities:
• Smaller Private sector services larger student numbers than State
• Private sector education preferred over state education
Distribution of Education
5
• Teachers at Institutes:
• 57.88% in State
• 42.12% in Private
• Students by Gender:
• 57.38% Male
• 42.62% Female
• Analysis & Opportunities:

6
Distribution of Education
English Language Usage
Language of Learning:
• English first choice language in ALL Universities for teaching
• English and Urdu to be taught in 92% of Private Schools (Primary & High – ages 5 to
15)
English Language Influence:
• 22 million internet users (more than Australia’s whole population)
• Satellite and Cable television (with US channels)
• Legal and judiciary system based on British (English) Law
English Part of Schools Categorization:
• Pakistan has four categories of school-level education:
1. Private elite English medium schools
2. Private non-elite English medium schools
3. State Urdu medium schools
4. Madrasas – Islamic schools
• Advantage of English medium schools over on-English State schools:
Better paid and educated teaches in States schools still produce poor results,
because a pupil learning English in a state school needs a further 2.5 years to achieve
what a Year 3 pupil in a private non-elite school can do in English
7
8
Growing Role of Private Schools
• Most non-elite private schools are low-
cost, commercial organizations that are
driven to turning over a profit rather
than the educational welfare of the
student
• Average rural family spends 13 – 20% of
its income
on their children’s education
• Learning outcomes significantly better
in private schools
as compared with state schools
9
Sports and Extra Curricular Activities
• Private educational institutions offer better sports training and extra
curricular activities (e.g. arts, crafts, writing, debating, computer skills
etc.)
• Sports training and competitions inter classes
• Summer and winter sports training camps to encourage participation
in sports and extra curricular activities
• Outside of the elite schools of Pakistan, there is social
discouragement by parents upon children to pursue sporting
activities, with a bias towards academic achievement, which leads
to job/employment certainty
