Question 1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
‘9 frames’ – choose 9 elements and compare each to existing products – E.g.
masthead, cover lines, central image, colours, secondary images, lettering on
contents page, layout of double page spread, etc.
My magazine is based around Kerrang, it is similar in the aspect that it has a bold masthead which is recognisable and grabs the audiences
attention. The lettering on the front cover is similar to Kerrang because it is bold and square, and it is the same colour scheme because the
colour red is often linked to the genre metal. The banners at the top and bottom of the page are similar to the ones in the Kerrang magazine,
and they offer more information about what is inside the magazine to try and attract a wider audience.
My magazine contents page is based around a Kerrang! magazine contents page, it is similar to the Kerrang! contents page in the
layout of the pictures taking up the top half of the page and the contents taking up the bottom half. It also has about the same
amount of columns. There are differences in the colours, but they both use at least one dark colour. However, Kerrang! Uses
yellow, which is a bright and happy colour and you wouldn’t normally see that used in a metal magazine.
I based my double page spread around this double page spread because I thought it looked nice. Similarities are that I have the
person to the side of the page, with the Q and A on the other side. The colours for the question and the answers are different as
well, the questions are in white and the answers are in red (it’s the other way around for the other magazine). I also have the title
for the page taking up a lot of room so that it stands out and catches the readers attention.
