SUPERIMPOSITION
Superimposition in video editing refers to combining two or
more pieces footage together to create a single video. This
means overlaying the first video on top of another video,
then allowing both to be seen on the same frame by altering
their opacity.

FADE IN AND FADE
OUT
One shot fades in and the other shot fades out.

CUT
Most common, ongoing straight cuts.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctKnXX-Nfg8
CUTTING>>>
GRAPHIC MATCH
Is a cut between either two different objects, two different
spaces, or two different compositions in which an object in
the two shots graphically match, often helping to establish a
strong continuity of action and linking the two shots
metaphorically.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mI3s5fA7Zhk&feature=fvwp&NR=1
PARALLEL EDITING
A device of narrative construction in which the development
of two pieces of action are presented simultaneously. Often
to reach an important climax.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ts1x6uADFtM
SHOT REVERSE SHOT
The camera alternates back and forth between two
characters.

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jm76Ci3qL38
EYELINE MATCH

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wz0jvz3NE8I
ACTION MATCH
Perspective of the camera changes to create a continuous
editing shot.

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZsUqJYiKHY
JUMP CUT
Two sequential shots of the same subject are taken from
camera positions slightly vary. This causes the subject of the
shots to appear to "jump" position in a discontinuous way.

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diNUplP7GZ8
CROSS CUTTING
To demonstrate action happening at the same time in two
different scenes. Similar to parallel editing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_I82117oAw
CUTAWAY AND CUT IN
SHOTS
A shot away from the main scene and a shot close up in the
scene.

GENERAL TERMS>>>
CONTINUITY EDITING
Predominant style of film editing and video editing in film and
television. The purpose of continuity editing is to smooth
over the inherent discontinuity of the editing process; it
establishes a coherence between shots.

                                          180’ Rule
MONTAGE EDITING
Series of shots edited to condense time, space &
information.

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvdmOG_VhKQ
LONG TAKE & SHORT
TAKE
Long: An uninterrupted shot in a film which lasts much
longer than the conventional editing pace either of the film
itself or of films in general. It usually lasts several minutes. It
can be used for dramatic and narrative effect.

Short: Used in montage, rapid edits from shot to shot.
Opposite of long take.
SLOW MOTION
Emphasises a scene...reduces the pace.

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HPW4hhPKNQ
ELLIPSIS
It is an apparent break in natural time continuity as it is
implied in the film's story.

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwJUy2xoPj4
EXPANSION OF TIME
The same shot can be shown from multiple angles and
repeated...common in sports shots.
POST-PRODUCTION
VISUAL EFFECTS
Occurs after the actual end of shooting. Post production also
includes:
•Video editing
•Sound effects
•Soundtrack
Visual effects done by green screen...
