It's a Phone It's a Computer No It's Mobile Learning - Course Technology Computing Conference
Presenter: Michael M. Grant, University of Memphis
Much of the digital press and hype of the Twitterverse and blogosphere is dedicated to mobile learning initiatives with a single platform or device, such as smartphones, iPod Touches, tablets, and most recently iPads. However, one of the most significant promises of mobile learning is the ability for faculty members, teachers, and students to use their own mobile computing devices. In this workshop, we will explore hands-on strategies for teaching and learning that are appropriate for a variety of devices and platforms. First, we will investigate quick response (QR) codes as a method to forward information to students, as well as transmit information to students. Next, we'll consider a number of quick strategies to use with cellphones' text messaging and voice capabilities. These include polling and knowledge checks with Polleverywhere.com, phonecasting with iPadio, and Google Voice. Lastly, we'll also consider a number of easy tools, such as Remind101 and Twitter, to improve course communications and learning. This is a BYOD (bring your own device) session, so be sure to bring your mobile device with you!
