1. bluAir desktop quick start
Thank you for purchasing bluAir desktop, a powerful and easy to use Bluetooth broad-
casting device. In this chapter you will learn how to quickly start your own Bluetooth-
based campaign.

To make bluAir desktop running, just plug
it to the power. To be able to define your
own Bluetooth campaigns, we recommend
also to connect bluAir desktop to the net-
work using Ethernet cable.
For other connectivity options (WiFi
or GPRS) please refer to Chapter 8.5.

After approximately 4 minutes from the
power on, you will hear a “happy” sound
indicating that bluAir started broadcasting
files. By default, bluAir is uploaded with
a demo picture. To test reception, please
turn on Bluetooth function in your mobile
phone, and make sure it is in public mode.

Broadcasting phases
Phase 1, Device detection: bluAir scans for Bluetooth-enabled device located
in a range up to 100 meters (330 feet) depending on the interior conditions and
a target mobile phone type.

Phase 2, Permission request: for every device bluAir sends request for permission
of sending files (it looks like: Do you want to connect with bluAir?)

Phase 3, Content upload: once user grants permission, bluAir sends files (thanks to
multithreaded software architecture and multiple bluetooth radios installed, sending
files to one Customer will not stop detection of new mobile phones around). The num-
ber of actual concurrent connections will depend on the type of bluAir hotspot you
have purchased.

Once you complete your test with receiving files, let’s create your own campaign.
For that, you will need to log into your account on bluBase web management platform
described in more detail in the following chapters.

4. Display / edit hotspot information
4.1. Hotspot’s information page
To access a particular hotspot’s information page, just click its name in the hotspots list.

By clicking any of the hotspots from the list you will be redirected to the detailed hotspot page.
Here you can check precise statistics for any time period.


4.2. Offline Update & Upload Statistics
In case there’s no network connection between you bluAir unit and bluBase application, you will need
to synchronize its data offline.

Offline Update - saves campaign’s settings to a ZIP file, which you should save to USB pen drive and
then plug it into your bluAir hotspot . Depending on whether the update process is successful or not -
you will hear a “joyful” or “sad” beep sound.

Upload Statistics - lets you import hotspot statistics to bluBase in case when your hotspot was work-
ing offline. Please plug USB pen drive into the hotspot - after you hear a joyful beep you may unplug
it and plug the pen drive into your computer’s USB slot. Click BROWSE and choose a file saved on the
pen drive. This will allow to view your campaign’s statistics (charts) in the bluBase application.

4.3. Edit hotspot’s settings
To edit a given hotspot’s settings just click the EDIT button on the hotspot’s information page.


On the hotspot settings page you can change the parameters of your hotspot and save them.

Name - a name of your hotspot for your own reference.
Time Zone - has to be set up properly for the statistics.
Watchdog - monitors your hotspot’s activity. No response from hotspot over a given time results
in sending a notification to the specified e-mail address.

Broadcasted name - this will appear on the user’s phone as a sender name.

Pairing PIN - some phones require a PIN to communicate with bluAir.
Scheme - there are several schemes appropriate for specific locations or situations: Bust stop, Event,
High traffic location, In-store, Low-traffic location, Presentation. A Custom scheme lets you change in-
dividual connection parameters (careful - advanced users only!)

Connection time-out - maximum connection time. If too low, your customers may not be able to answer content upload request; if too high, the
hotspot may be not able to serve all the customers at once.

Connection retries - maximum number of connection retries in one session. Please note this applies to physical connection rejections, which
can be not only a result of customer’s decision to reject content, but also can include situations like: customer went out of the range, customer
did not notice the request (timed-out), physical interruption of connection. We advise to use at least 3-5 connection retries.

Next retry after - the amount of time until next connection retry, in case number of connection retries limit was reached. E.g. if connection
retries is set to 3 and next retry after is set to 60 minutes - the hotspot will try to connect the handset 3 times, then wait 60 minutes, then again
it will try connecting the handset.

Resend after - the amount of time the same content should be resent. May be set to ‘never’.

Broadcasting radius - default is the maximum distance (100 metres) at which phones will be reached, but you can decrease it if you need to.
This setting may be useful if your campaign focuses only on people in the close range of the hotspot. In very crowded places, lower range setting
(e.g. 20 meters) may increase campaign effectiveness by ensuring people attracted by visual encouragement, e.g. ‘turn on bluetooth’ will get the
content very quick.


5. Display / edit content information
5.1. Contents list
To display your contents list, just click the CONTENT button in the top menu:

Sortable contents list shows your content: file type, name, number of sent files and last connection
date.

5.2. Content’s information page
To view a particular content’s information page, just click its name in the contents list.


A content’s information page shows a list of linked files in various handset groups. From here you can
download each file, visit information pages of handset groups or choose to edit this content group.

5.3. Adding new content
On the Contents list page (see 5.1.) click the button new content.

New content page consists of a required name field (for your reference) and additional tabs:

upload content (default) - lets you upload files from your computer and define groups of handsets
on which these files are viewable.

image content wizard - lets you create content graphics on the fly, within your browser.

lottery wizard - lets you define any number of “winning content” which is limited (it is sent to
users only the given number of times). Alongside, you can define other unlimited content.


5.3.1. Upload content
Usually, “new content” would be a group of different files targeted at various phone models (e.g. cor-
rectly sized images for many phone screen resolutions or different versions of Flash Lite files, etc.)

To upload a file from your computer, click the browse button, select it and then hit upload file.

After you your file is uploaded, its name will be shown on the list, as well as its size, filter(s) for target-
ing handsets, number of handsets matched through that filter(s). Also, one of your uploaded files will
have to be marked as “Default content” - that file will be sent to all the handsets whose parameters
weren’t recognized but who accepted it. Alternatively you can check “ignore non matched handsets”
option below the list.

Typically a file that is uploaded will be targeted at all available handsets by default. However, when
uploading images, a convenient feature of bluBase will help and speed up the targeting process: files
that have resolution value in their names will be automatically targeted at handsets with that screen
resolution, e.g. a file name “promotion-128x160.png” will be automatically targeted at phones with
that resolution.

If you wish to manually edit the handsets on which a file is viewable, you have to edit the target
handsets.


With the use of filter (or filter set) you can precisely specify which handsets will be receiving particu-
lar files. You can narrow targeted handsets by Vendor, Model, Resolution, Java Platform, Bluetooth Java
API, Flash Lite version, Video Format Support, Image Format Support and Sound Format Support.

Select from available values in the left window and click the right arrow button. You can remove
already selected values the other way round (select in the right window and click the left arrow button).

- add another filter (you can add as many as you wish).

- remove the last added filter.

After you finish defining target phones, hit apply.


5.3.2. Image content wizard
Image content wizard lets you create graphics for your campaigns without leaving the browser.
All you have to do is to choose a background, add text, image and use one of the available layouts.
bluBase will generate images for all handset screen resolutions.

1. Set background by choosing an image file on you computer
or by choosing a color in the color picker window ( ).
2. Add text if you wish - specify font, color and font style.
3. Add picture / logo - browse to an image file on your
computer. A good practice is to have transparent background
in your image, as it will display nicely on different background

4. Select layout - place text above, below or over the picture.

You may wish to show only the text or only the picture.
5. Before you generate and save your images, hit preview to
estimate the results.
6. Hit generate & save and wait - generating images may
take a while.


After the image generation process finishes, you will be redirected to your new content’s information
page. The list shows generated file list: names, assigned handset group and image previews.

5.3.3. Contest wizard
Contest wizard deals with already uploaded / generated content. It lets you define “winning” content,
which is limited (only a given number of users can receive it). Alongside, you will define other unlim-
ited content for the rest of handsets users.

Creating a mobile contest is easy. Just select a content item from drop down list and decide whether it
is unlimited (leave check box selected) or limited (deselect the check box and provide a number).

Hit the “+” button to add another content item.

You can add as many different limited and unlimited content items, as you wish.
When finished, hit save.


5.4. Editing content
Basically, the procedure when editing your content files is the same as in Chapter 5.3.1 (Uploading files).

On the contents list page, choose a content item you want to edit.

Next, on the content’s information page hit edit.

Now the list of your files is editable. You can change the name of your content set, as well as remove
specific files or upload new ones.

Obviously, you can edit targeted handset groups as well (refer to Chapter 5.3.1 for detailed instructions).


6. Display / edit campaign information
6.1. Summary page of all available Bluetooth campaigns
To display your campaign list, just click the CAMPAIGNS button in the top menu:

Sortable campaign list shows: campaign name, status, number of sent files and last connection date.
Below the list you will find a standard statistics pane, regarding all your campaigns.


6.2. Campaign’s information page
To view a particular campaign’s information page, just click its name in the campaign list.

A campaign’s information page shows a list of associated content items and hotspots, as well as a stan-
dard statistics pane regarding the selected campaign. Here you can also decide to edit the campaign,
or offline update your bluAir unit with the campaign’s settings file (refer to Chapter 4.2).


6.3. Adding new Bluetooth campaign
On the campaigns summary page, click the button new campaign.

You will be redirected to a new campaign form. Provide a name, and a description if you need.
Next, use arrows to select hotspots that will broadcast this campaign.

Then start adding previously uploaded or generated content sets, by hitting the “+” button.

Select a desired content item from the drop down list and decide about its schedule (broadcasting
time period and interval). Add as many different content items as you wish.



6.4. Editing campaign
On a selected campaign’s information page, hit edit.

You will be redirected to this campaign’s edit form. You can change its name, description, hotspots as-
signment and content items (refer to Chapter 6.3 - Adding new Bluetooth campaign).

Then start adding previously uploaded or generated content sets, by hitting the “+” button.



7. Handset information
bluBase has a constantly growing database of handsets and information about their parameters.
You may wish to check some phones’ technical properties when planning a mobile campaign.

To view a handsets information page, just click the HANDSETS button in the top menu.

By default handsets page displays first 20 handsets sorted by popularity, but you can filter the list by
handset vendor, resolution or Java support.

To view a particular handset’s parameters, just click the model link.


8. bluAir desktop unit
In the box you will find:

8.1. Back of the unit

8.2. Broadcasting files
To start broadcasting files simply connect the desktop to power supply. After a couple of minutes
there will be a short beep sound and the transmission will begin. There is a bluAir advertising con-
tent sent by default. To change content use bluBase application (Chapter 5.3) or offline management
(Chapter 4.2).

8.3. bluAir configurator
In the bluAir configurator you have access to many important options. If the desktop works without
problems, there is no need to use the configurator. Almost all its settings can be changed in bluBase.

To work with the bluAir configurator you have to:

• plug the keyboard to the bluAir desktop (via USB or PS2),
• plug the monitor to the bluAir desktop.

When bluAir desktop is running (approx. 3 minutes after power on) you will see an input box on the
screen. To enter configurator please provide the password. During booting up you may see warnings.
They may be safely ignored. To clear the screen press CTRL+L.


The configuration password is bluair2008.

When you are successfully logged in, you will see main menu on your screen.


8.4. bluAir (bluAir settings)

— same as broadcasting name in bluBase. This name is displayed
on the screen of the mobile, when the customer gets the message.
hostname

— choose this option if you want the unit to connect
to bluBase via the Internet and synchronize all data.
update

start — starts the bluAir application.

stop — stops the bluAir application.

restart — restarts the bluAir application.


8.5. Connecting bluAir to the Internet
Depending on the version of bluAir hotspot you have purchased, there are several methods of con-
necting the hotspot to the Internet:

via Ethernet Cable: plug the ethernet cable to the hotspot
BEFORE you start it – if your local network is configured to provide
configuration automatically (automatic DHCP), bluAir hotspot

will retrieve all the configuration information and will attempt to connect
to the Internet automatically. If your local network is configured manu-
ally, you will need to enter bluAir configurator (Chapter 8.3) and proceed
as described in Configuring Network Settings section (Chapter 8.7).

via Wireless Connection (requires WiFi module): enter bluAir
2 configurator (Chapter 8.3) and configure your Wireless LAN
Settings (Chapter 8.9).

via GPRS Connection (requires GPRS module): enter bluAir configura-
tor (Chapter 8.3) and configure your GPRS Connection (Chapter 8.10).

8.6. System (system settings)
In the System settings you can set your local time and date.

1 From the main menu choose System (system settings).

2 Set your time & date.

3 Reboot the unit.

If the unit is connected to the Internet, it will always download the time & date settings from
bluBase. Be sure that after manually setting time & date the unit will not connect to bluBase,
as your settings will be overridden.

8.7. Configuring Network Settings
By default, bluAir hotspot is configured to automatically connect to the Internet via Ethernet cable. In
case you want to use Ethernet static configuration, Wireless Network or GPRS network, you need to
run bluAir configurator (Chapter 8.3).

8.8. LAN network settings

Dynamic IP address from DHCP server (default configuration)

1 Choose Network (Internet settings) from configurator’s main menu

2 Next choose Change your LAN settings option

3 Choose Set dynamic IP address

Static IP address (static configuration)

Proceed with steps 1-2 from above.
(Main menu > Network (Internet settings) > Change you LAN settings)
Choose Set static IP address.

In the next steps you will be asked for:
- static IP address for bluAir (e.g. 192.168.0.150),
- network mask (e.g. 255.255.255.0),
- default network gateway (e.g. 192.168.0.1)

DNS

In Network (Internet settings) you can manually edit IP for DNS servers.

If you are not sure what settings should be used, please contact your network administrator or
Internet provider for details.

When connecting the desktop to the router, first check the router settings (you should find all
instructions in the router manual).


8.9. Wireless LAN settings

bluAir Wireless LAN supports the following authorization methods:

WPA-PSK WPA2-PSK Shared-key with WEP

To configure WiFi network please follow the steps described below:

1 Choose Network (Internet settings) from the configurator’s main menu (Chapter 8.3)

2 Next choose WiFi (Change your wireless settings)

3 In two steps you will be asked for:

- your wireless network SSID (the name of the network, e.g. ‚my_wifi‘)

- wireless network password (either ASCII or a hexadecimal password
for accessing the network)

4 When you provide these settings you will be asked to reboot the unit.

If you are not sure what settings should be used, please contact your network administrator or
internet provider for details.

When connecting the desktop to the router, first check the router settings (you should find all
instructions in the router manual).

Watch out for misspellings in the SSID and password.

Settings will be effective only after you reboot your bluAir hotspot.

8.10. GPRS connection
In order to start configuration you will need the following information from your GSM provider
(SIM card supplier):

- PIN number for your SIM card (e.g. 1234),
- APN (Access Point Name) for connecting to the Internet (e.g. 3ireland.ie),
- User name (e.g. user),
- Password (e.g. user),
- Phone number (e.g. *99#).

To configure network over HSDPA/GPRS modem please follow these steps :

1 Choose Network (Internet settings) from configurator’s main menu.

2 Next choose Gprs (Change your GPRS modem settings) option

3 Next choose Set (Connection settings)

4 If your GSM provider is not on the list, please choose Custom

On the next screen provide user name, password, APN and phone number (you should
get that information from your GSM provider)

Finally choose Pon (Connect HSDPA/GPRS modem) and provide a PIN number for your
SIM card and choose OK.

Watch out for misspellings in the user name and password.

Modem monitor

Modem monitor provides simple, but very important function – after turning it on, the modem
(and connection) will be always restarted, if something goes wrong.


8.11. Troubleshooting guide
The unit is not broadcasting files.

Is the unit connected properly to a power supply?
Have you turned on Bluetooth in your mobile
(and set profile to public/visible)?
Have you checked the campaign definition? (see bluBase manual)
Have you checked the hotspot settings?
Have you tried rebooting the unit?

The unit can not connect to the Internet (via LAN).

Have you checked the cables?
Have you checked your LAN settings?
Have you tried changing dynamic configuration to static one? (page 4)
Do you use confirmed static settings?
Have you checked router settings?

The unit can not connect to the Internet (via WiFi).

Do you use WiFi antenna?
Do you use confirmed WiFi settings?
Have you checked router settings?

The unit can not connect to the Internet (via GPRS).

Is the modem connected properly?
Do you use confirmed SIM settings (from your GSM provider)?
Have you tried to reboot the unit?
Have you checked the modem with other device?
