INTERNSHIP
ā¢ This was my first internship that is related to my field of study
ā¢ This internship will give me an opportunity to prepare me for my career in
engineering
ā¢ This was a good opportunity to meet different types of engineers
ā¢ Meeting other interns with similar interests
7. WHAT DO I KNOW ABOUT
PARSONS
ā¢ Parsons was founded in 1944 by Ralph Monroe Parsons
ā¢ Parsons is a leading firm that have over 100 locations worldwide
ā¢ Parsons have five different types of business units: PCG, PE&I, PGS, PTG, & MEA
ā¢ Parsons is part of STP: Southeastern Transportation Partners
ā¢ Parsons core values are safety, quality, integrity, diversity, innovation, and
sustainability
ā¢ Parsons and WorkCare partnered together to prevent incident intervention, which is
a resource designed to provide Parsons employees with immediate access to
qualified medical clinicians who are able to provide the employees with prompt
medical assessment
8. DAILY TASKS
ā¢ Arrive to the Portsmouth Tunnel Facility around 7am
ā¢ Check the intern schedule to see what inspector Iām assigned for the morning
and/or afternoon
ā¢ Go with the inspector to either of these following locations:
ļNew Midtown Tunnel
ļNorfolk or Portsmouth Approach
ļMLK Extension
ā¢ Either I shadow the inspector or do the inspection with some help
ā¢ Takes some notes while out on the field
ā¢ For rest of the day, I either work on my report or do some errands in the office
9. CHALLENGES FROM THE
INTERNSHIP
ā¢ Having no knowledge whatās going on the project during the first couple of weeks
during the internship
ā¢ Trying not to suffer from heat exhaustion when going out to the field
ā¢ Trying to keep myself occupied in the office
ā¢ Struggling with verbal tenses when writing summary report every week

ā¢ Learning how to read rebar from the tags and plans
ā¢ Have a better understanding when reading plans
ā¢ Shadowing an inspector does help me to gain more insight on the project
ā¢ Touring the Rehabilitation Work of the Westbound Downtown Tunnel
ā¢ Knowing the difference between rehabilitation work and construction work
ā¢ Being more observant when it comes to safety issues
