An essay is an organized piece
of witing focused on a single topic
That topic is organized around a thesis, that
thesis is developed by supporting paragraphs

It is the sentence in the essay that
states the thesis

and bear into mind
mistakes or
misunderstandings you
did not perceibe .
Types of essays
Narrative
 It tells a story
 It answers the five “w” (what, who, when,
where and why)
 It include dialogues and parts of everyday
discurse.
 Thesis statement is not needed, but can be
useful.
Cause and effects
May include only the causes or only the
effects.
May help explain why something happens
or, understand which are the consequences
of a fenomenom.
This essay allows us to identify patterns
and explain why things turned out the way
that they did.
Descriptive
Descriptions are fundamental to
create images in our mind.
A good descriptive essay should
estimulate the five senses.
Comparison and contrast
It should show not very obvious similarities or
differences between two persons, things or ideas.
There are two primary ways to organize your compare
and contrast paper:
 Chunking: placing all of the information for each
individual subject in one place (chunk), and then
using similarities as transitions.
 Piecing: giving pieces of the information for each
individual subject in each paragraph—arranging the
information by topic rather than by subject.
Problem-solution essay
It involves careful organization
It is important to state why the
solution proposed could work
Classification essays
It sorts information into appropiate
categories.
The key is the choose of useful and
meaningful categories
the thesis statement and introduction
must define or explain the category
you plan to discuss
Persuasive essays
Its aim is to convince others.
A persuasive thesis statement is a
one-sentence description of your
topic and the argument that you
plan to make
