TOP ROADS TO CRUISE IN YOUR MAZDA
If it’s adventure, diversity, gourmet food, local wine and relaxation you’re after – pack your
bags and get ready to take your Mazda on an unforgettable journey!
There is so much to see and do in Australia and a self-drive holiday is the perfect way to
discover our amazing country.
Here are a few roads we think are worth Zoom-Zooming down …
A MAZDA ‘TRIBUTE’ TO THE SAVANNAH WAY …
The Savannah Way is considered the ‘adventure drive of Australia’. The 3700km route runs
from Cairns in tropical Queensland to Broome in Western Australia – passing through
Katherine in the Northern Territory along the way.
Reasonably new to the tourist map, this route passes through some of Australia’s most
spectacular scenery including five World Heritage areas, over 15 national parks, the world’s
longest lava tubes, historic goldmining towns, outback cattle stations, Australia’s oldest pub
and a wealth of indigenous culture.
The ultimate way to discover the Savannah Way is in your Mazda Tribute. As you head off
on an adventure, it doesn’t mean leaving comforts behind. With its luxury appointments,
ability to read road and traffic conditions and 4WD capabilities – the road is yours.
Soak up stunning tropical Cairns, the Great Barrier Reef and ancient World Heritage-listed
rainforests in Queensland before heading off on your rugged experience.
Located in the heart of the Gulf Savannah, Queensland, the historic gold-rush town of
Croydon will take you back in time with its beautiful buildings and sites, and teach you tales
of the town and its people.
Joining the outback towns of Timber Creek, Katherine, Larrimah, Mataranka, Daly Waters,
Cape Crawford and Borroloola in the Northern Territory, this section of the Savannah Way is
classic ‘top end’ country with great fishing spots, Australian wildlife and old tin pubs that offer
the perfect excuse to stop and chat with the locals over a well deserved drink.

One of Katherine’s main attractions, the Katherine River, provides an ideal opportunity for
outdoor pursuits including fishing, bird watching, swimming and canoeing – and if that gets
all a bit too tiring, head to the Katherine Hot Springs which provide the ideal sanctuary for
total relaxation.
Appropriate for its name - Keep River will ‘keep’ you busy with excellent bush walking tracks
that explore the rugged terrain, while in Gregory National Park go 4WD driving in your Mazda
Tribute to see the spectacular gorge scenery, rare wildlife species and significant traces of
Aboriginal culture.
Regardless of whether you’re starting or ending your driving journey in Broome – don’t forget
to saddle up for a camel ride along Cable Beach. Riding under the tropical sunset to the
sound of waves lapping in the background is an iconic experience you’ll be talking about for
years.
Don’t forget to send us a postcard too!
When to go:
There are two main seasons: the wet and the dry. The wet summer months, December to
March, are hot and humid with heavy bursts of rain and thunderstorms, while the dry winter
months of May to October are much cooler.
Important tips:
A couple of important things to remember for your journey along the Savannah Way:
1. Tempting as it might be to stop by the side of the road and take a swim in one of the
rivers, think otherwise as they’re inhabited by both salt water and freshwater
crocodiles. Many areas are sign-posted, however, this is not always the case, so
don’t rely on that.
2. Whilst most of the road is sealed, Normanton, QLD, to Roper Bar, NT, is unsealed
and it’s advised you check the road reports before taking off on your adventure
during the wet season (December – March).
