How does your media product represent
particular social groups?
Camera Angles.
We used camera angles to manipulate our film to the way we wanted it to be, and show
the things we wanted to show. In one of the very first scenes as the nurse is coming to
see to Rudy we used a low angle shot of the Nurse. This then shows to the audience
that the Nurse has more authority over the patient, as he is in the critical condition.
Emphasising on the fact that he is helpless. We also used a close up shot of the zombie
in order to show the rotting flesh and cuts and how messed up it is, using this allowed
to the audience to feel the same way as Rudy portraying the feeling of fear across to
them. The Birds eye view shots and high angle shots of the zombie chasing Rudy
allowed us to show the presence and danger of the zombie in this situation.
Editing.
We used edits to connote Passages of time, due to our film being non linear as we jump a
passage of time from the outbreak actually starting. To show the changes in time we
used fades to black and white, representing flashbacks. We used an edit of a vignette
when Seth is speaking to Rudy in the hospital bed, as this is the point of view show from
Rudy in the hospital bed, the blurred edges uses the ideology of someone in a coma been
able to hear etc. but not clearly make out the situation. Also jump cuts are used jump
cuts to break the continuity in our film, as we feel these represented the zombies mental
state well, as the jumps show they cannot function correctly and there view of things is
impeded due to the disease.
Age.
We used the stereotype of age well with the nurse as nurses tend to be young, as our
nurse is young. Also the age of our actors also represent the age of our target audience
well, with our actors all between the age of 15 and 30. Although this is our main target
audience we still aim to other audiences which are older than this. The age of our
actors that we used also helped with the audience to relate in with the movie, as they
would think the same we do in the film etc.
Mise En Scene
Things we used in our film helped for us to target social groups. Such as the outfit we had
Seth dressed in when he comes to leave the note for Rudy, this appealed to our target
age as he was dressed in a young and fashionable way, which many people who watch
our film would also dress like. It also helped us to show the background he came from,
dressed smartly and in nice clothes which suggests he is a manly man and comes from a
good job etc. This will then allows us to appeal to this group of people in our movie,
entices them to watch the film as it does not come across as the girly type of film.
Sound.
Sounds within our film used such as the voice over used when Rudy is reading then
note Seth left, helps for us to portray the fear over to the audience more as the
reading is coming from an actual character. Also the music over the film title we used
which we took inspiration from ‘The Thing’ by ‘John Carpenter’. This would then mean
to social groups who are familiar with this song may be interested in our film as it
fitted our film nicely so they may be interested in this type of film. However they may
have the totally different film taste as it could be used with so many different other
films.
