- MITS: â The MDP answered not only the questions I knew to ask but also the questions I didnât know to ask! This is an essential program that every mentor needs.â â I will use what I learned in this program to focus my mentoring, allowing me to better choose my mentees and to be a more effective mentor to them.â â The MDP seminars helped me understand the issues among junior faculty and provided more systematic ways to deal with them. These are valuable experiences that I will most definitely incorporate into my own skills.â Senior Mentors Advice: âYour lack of planning is not my emergency; Y ou are getting a reputation for not meeting deadlines. Is this the reputation you want to have?; Beware of mentors who eat their young; A bad mentee is far worse than no mentee â
- Thus far, 48 residents have received up to $2,000 to complete a specific mentored research project. Table 5 includes 22 residents who received pilot funding in 2009-2010, their mentors, residency programs and research projects. There is a wide spectrum of research represented from 11 different residency programs. The current Resident Research Scholar is Dr. Rita Mukhtar, a 4 th year surgery resident, who is conducting a project on immunity and response to breast cancer therapy with her mentor, Dr. Laura Esserman, Professor of Surgery and Director of the Carol Frank Buck Breast Cancer Center. Dr. Mukhtar was a PACCTR fellow as a medical student, and her participation in the Resident Scholar program embodies the promise of graduated and integrated training that we can achieve only with the coordinated approach offered by the CTST program. s

- Dr. Laura Fejerman, a Spring 2007 awardee, conducted pilot admixture mapping studies of breast cancer in Black and Hispanic women (Fejerman et al., 2010, Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev) and has received extramural funding to continue these studies.
