The Lean Project Management event hosted by the CMI Norfolk Branch on March 16th was very popular and reached maximum capacity. The event provided attendees with information and techniques on lean project management. It discussed how lean principles can be applied not just to manufacturing but also to other sectors like transportation. Attendees learned about the eight wastes to eliminate and were given ideas to implement lean practices in their own workplaces. Feedback from attendees was positive and future branch events are planned.

Your Feedback – Lean Project Management Event

6. Your Feedback Newsletter 01 – and Our Response(s)
In our first Newsletter we asked for your feedback and we’re pleased to say that you didn’t disappoint!
We had a couple of people point out the gremlins that sneakily crept in and were to do with a certain Branch Secretary
attaching the draft version of the Newsletter to the email rather than the checked version but at least that proves you read
it - apologies all!
Secondly, we had a comment that the ‘Meet the Committee’ section wasn’t the easiest to read due to the page layout so
we’ve changed the format of the Newsletter a tad this time and, hopefully, you’ll find that it reads better this time around.
We also had a number of comments regarding the cost and irregular frequency of CMI Norfolk Branch events. We
recognise that all CMI members pay a yearly membership subscription and that you want to feel that you are receiving
value for money. In light of this we have reviewed how your Branch is run and have made what we believe to be a
number of positive changes:
1. We will be holding Branch Committee meetings regularly on the third Thursday of every month with effect
from 17 March 2011. This will ensure that you can provide us with feedback in advance of meetings sure in
the knowledge of when the meeting will take place. Members are also very welcome to come along to
meetings. The one thing we would ask is that you email us at norfolk.branch@managers.org.uk by the
second Thursday of the month if you have a specific item you’d like to raise to allow us to ensure that an
Agenda item is created and time allowed for you.
2. As from February 2012 we will be holding events monthly on the first Thursday of every month. This will
provide you, our members, with the certainty that something will be happening on the same day of every
month at the same time and will allow you to put the dates into your diaries well in advance. We are already
putting together a list of potential events for 2012 and would be delighted to hear your suggestions for
possible topics – or perhaps you may know a potential speaker that may be interested in presenting?
3. After listening to your comments and reviewing Branch finances we have decided that all general monthly
events will be FREE TO MEMBERS with effect from February 2012. This means that your membership
subscription will buy you not only access to the many resources and benefits offered by the CMI via their
website but will also provide you with multiple learning and networking opportunities throughout the year. We
will be retaining a small charge for guests that will be waived if they sign up to join the CMI at the event.
Initially, this will be for a trial period of one year but, if it proves successful, we’ll retain the policy going
forward. In order for this to work we really will need your support at events so please come along and support
your local Branch!
4. We will also be organising two ‘paid for’ events each year – one summer bash and a Christmas party. These
will be rather more extravagant than our monthly events and will give everyone the chance to dress up and
let their hair down. We’d love to hear your ideas as to what these events could look like: purely social, formal
or informal, with or without speakers etc. Please do let us have your thoughts.
5. We are considering the possibility of holding occasional events or Committee meetings outside of Norwich;
perhaps further afield such as King’s Lynn, Thetford or Great Yarmouth to make it easier for our widely
spread membership to attend events/meetings. If you would be interested in events being held elsewhere in
the County, please get in touch at norfolk.branch@managers.org.uk and, if demand is strong enough, we’ll
look to put something on closer to you
Because we want to offer you best value and respond to your concerns by providing events free of charge, the Committee
has been looking at alternative ways to support the Branch. One of these is to offer advertisements in our Newsletters.
The first of these appears in this month’s issue and we’d like to extend to our members the opportunity to support the
Newsletter and Branch activities by advertising in the Newsletter or by sponsoring events. If you, or your business, would
be interested in providing support to your Branch in this way while also putting your message in front of over 900 locally-
based practicing managers and business owners please contact us at norfolk.branch@managers.org.uk. Please note that
Newsletters also appear on the National CMI website and are available for all members and non-members to view.
We very much hope that you will consider the changes we’ve outlined above to be positive and we’d very much value
your thoughts and comments on the changes and our other proposals. Remember, this is YOUR Branch and we want to
provide you with what you want, so please get in touch with us at norfolk.branch@managers.org.uk and let us know if
we’re heading in the right direction.
