3. And what more shall I say? For time would fail me
to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of
David and Samuel and the prophets— who
through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced
justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths
of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the
edge of the sword, were made strong out of
weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign
armies to flight. Women received back their dead
by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to
accept release, so that they might rise again to a
better life.
4. Others suffered mocking and flogging, and
even chains and imprisonment. They were
stoned, they were sawn in two, they were
killed with the sword. They went about in
skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted,
mistreated— of whom the world was not
worthy— wandering about in deserts and
mountains, and in dens and caves of the
earth.
5. And all these, though commended through
their faith, did not receive what was promised,
since God had provided something better for
us, that apart from us they should not be
made perfect.
Hebrews 11:32-40 (ESV)
6. Now Saul and they and all the men of Israel
were in the Valley of Elah, fighting with the
Philistines. And David rose early in the
morning and left the sheep with a keeper and
took the provisions and went, as Jesse had
commanded him. And he came to the
encampment as the host was going out to the
battle line, shouting the war cry. And Israel
and the Philistines drew up for battle, army
against army.
7. And David left the things in charge of the
keeper of the baggage and ran to the ranks
and went and greeted his brothers. As he
talked with them, behold, the champion, the
Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, came up
out of the ranks of the Philistines and spoke
the same words as before. And David heard
him. All the men of Israel, when they saw the
man, fled from him and were much afraid.
1 Samuel 17:19-24 (ESV)
9. And the Philistine said, "I defy the ranks of
Israel this day. Give me a man, that we may
fight together.“ When Saul and all Israel heard
these words of the Philistine, they were
dismayed and greatly afraid.
1 Samuel 17:10-11 (ESV)
10. And the Philistine said to David, "Am I a dog,
that you come to me with sticks?" And the
Philistine cursed David by his gods. The
Philistine said to David, "Come to me, and I
will give your flesh to the birds of the air and
to the beasts of the field."
Samuel 17:43-44 (ESV)
11. For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that
he should defy the armies of the living God?"
1 Samuel 17:26 (ESV)
15. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and
said to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no
need to answer you in this matter. If this be so,
our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from
the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us
out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known
to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or
worship the golden image that you have set up."
Daniel 3:16-18 (ESV)
16. Then they left the presence of the council,
rejoicing that they were counted worthy to
suffer dishonor for the name. And every day,
in the temple and from house to house, they
did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as
the Christ.
Acts 5:41-42 (ESV)
17. And after you have suffered a little while, the
God of all grace, who has called you to his
eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore,
confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
1 Peter 5:10 (ESV)
