Studying the atmospheres of a statistically significant number of rocky, terrestrial exoplanets - including the search for habitable and potentially inhabited planets - is one of the major goals of exoplanetary science and possibly the most challenging question in 21st century astrophysics. However, despite being at the top of the agenda of all major space agencies and ground-based observatories, none of the currently planned projects or missions worldwide has the technical capabilities to achieve this goal. In this talk we present new results from the LIFE Mission initiative, which addresses this issue by investigating the scientific potential of a mid infrared nulling interferometer observatory. Here we will focus on the mission's yield estimates, our simulator software as well as various exemplary science cases such as observing Earth- and Venus-twins or searching for phosphine in exoplanetary atmospheres.

A number of government, corporate, and academic organizations are collecting enormous amounts of data provided by environmental sensors. However, this data is too often locked within organizations and underutilized by the greater community. In this paper, we present a framework to make this sensor data openly accessible by publishing it on the Linked Open Data (LOD) Cloud. This is accomplished by converting raw sensor observations to RDF and linking with other datasets on LOD. With such a framework, organizations can make large amounts of sensor data openly accessible, thus allowing greater opportunity for utilization and analysis. Provenance, from the French word “provenir”, describes the lineage or histo-ry of a data entity. Provenance is critical information in the sensors domain to identify a sensor and analyze the observation data over time and geographical space. In this paper, we present a framework to model and query the provenance information associated with the sensor data exposed as part of the Web of Data using the Linked Open Data conventions. This is accomplished by developing an ontology-driven provenance man-agement infrastructure that includes a representation model and query infrastructure. This provenance infrastructure, called Sensor Provenance Management System (PMS), is underpinned by a domain specific provenance ontology called Sensor Provenance (SP) ontology. The SP ontology extends the Provenir upper level provenance ontology to model domain-specific provenance in the sensor domain. A new unsupervised algorithm, called CLimate and rEmote sensing Association patterns Miner, for mining association patterns on heterogeneous time series from climate and remote sensing data, integrated in a remote sensing information system is developed to improve the monitoring of sugar cane fields. The system, called RemoteAgri, consists of a large database of climate data and low-resolution remote sensing images, an image pre-processing module, a time series extraction module, and time series mining methods. The time series mining method transforms series to symbolic representation in order to identify patterns in a multitemporal satellite images and associate them with patterns in other series within a temporal sliding window. The validation process was achieved with agro climatic data and NOAA-AVHRR images of sugar cane fields. Rules generated by the new algorithm show the association patterns in different periods of time in each time series, pointing to a time delay between the occurrences of patterns in the series analyzed, corroborating what specialists usually forecast without having the burden of dealing with many data charts. This new method can be used by agro meteorologists to mine and discover knowledge from their long time series of past and forecasting data, being a valuable tool to support their decision-making process.

Earth Observation (EO) Data Cubes infrastructures model analysis-ready data generated from remote sensing images as multidimensional cubes (space, time and properties), especially for satellite image time series analysis. These infrastructures take advantage of big data technologies and methods to store, process and analyze the big amount of Earth observation satellite images freely available nowadays. Recently, EO Data Cubes infrastructures and satellite image time series analysis have brought new opportunities and challenges for the Land Use and Cover Change (LUCC) monitoring over large areas. LUCC have caused a great impact on tropical ecosystems, increasing global greenhouse gases emissions and reducing the planet’s biodiversity. This paper presents the utility of Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) neural network method in the process to extract LUCC information from EO Data Cubes infrastructures, using image time series analysis. Most classification techniques to create LUCC maps from satellite image time series are based on supervised learning methods. In this context, SOM is used as a method to assess land use and cover samples and to evaluate which spectral bands and vegetation indexes are best suitable for the separability of land use and cover classes. A case study is described in this work and shows the potential of SOM in this application

The objective of this research is to find the best conventional high order fuzzy time series model for annual precipitation series in southern Madagascar. This work consists on finding the hyper parameters (number of partition of the universe of discourse and model order) to obtain the best conventional high order fuzzy time series model for our experimental data. In previous works, entitled spatial and temporal variability of precipitation in southern Madagascar, we subdivided the study area between 22 ° S to 30 ° S latitude and 43 ° Eto 48 ° E longitude into four zones of homogeneous precipitation. In this article, we seek to model annual precipitation data representative of one of these four areas. These data were taken between 1979 and 2017. Our approach consists on subdividing the data: data obtained from 1979 to 2001 (60%) for the training and data from 2002 to 2017 (40%) to test the model. To determine the number of partitions and model order, we fix first the number of partitions to 10 and then to 15, 20, 25,30, 35, 40, 45 and 50.For each of these values, we vary the model order from 1 to 10.Thenwe locate the model order which corresponds to the minimum of the average curve between the Mean Absolute Errors (MAE) between the training data and the test data. Thus, the orders of the candidate model are 2, 3, 5, and 6.The next step is to fix the model order with the previous values and vary the number of partitions from 3 to 50.For each couple of hyper parameter of the model (number of partitions, model order), we locate the value of number of partitions corresponding to the minimum of the average curve between the absolute mean of the errors or MAE (Mean Absolute Error) between the train and test data. We obtain the hyper-parameter pairs (37, 2), (20, 3), (35, 5) and (35, 6).The first pair gives the lowest Mean Absolute Error. As a final result, we obtain the best high order fuzzy time series model with hyperparameters umber of partition equals thirty seven and of order equals two for annual precipitation in Southern of Madagascar.
