24. SupercapacitorsAdvanced Batteries
Electric energy is stored
physically in the electrochemical
double layer at the electrolyte-
electrode interface.
Electric energy is stored by the
conversion of chemical energy
through redox reactions between
the anode and cathode.

Electrochemical Energy Storage
25. Electrochemical Energy Storage
Advanced Batteries
• Higher energy density
• Short cycle life
• Lower power density
• Low self discharge
Supercapacitors
• Higher power density
• Lower energy density
• Long cycle life
• High self discharge
26. Battery vs. Capacitors
Battery storage enough energy but they are slow, less efficient and have
limited cycle life
Supercaps are fast, efficient and have high cycle life but, they are costly and
bulky

37. Sensible Heat Latent Heat Chemical Energy
Chemical
processes
Storage of heat is
based on temperature
changes in the
material (change in the
internal energy)
The storage of heat is based
on a phase transition (for
example solid-liquid). The
storage capacity of the phase
change materials is the
phase change enthalpy at the
phase change temperature +
sensible heat stored over the
whole temperature range of
the storage.
The storage of heat is
based on sorption or
thermochemical
reaction
The basic principle is:
AB + heat ⇔ A+B
The storage capacity is
the heat of reaction or
free energy of the
reaction.
