- Slide Objective:Set context, discuss the status quo of enterprise communications, the impact consumerization has on the discussion and present the Microsoft vision for Unified Communications.Initial Build - Communications Today, Talking Points:Technology has brought us a very long way in terms of how we communicate in the business world. But as communication and collaboration technologies have evolved, they have done so independently, in parallel with one another, creating communication silos. In the meantime, the way we work is changing; business is operating at a faster pace and frequently across time zones. As a society we are more mobile, have greater access to technology outside of the workplace and have expectations to match. Today’s Information Workers are using a variety of products and services to meet all of these needs in their professional and personal lives. For most companies today, telephony and voice mail, e-mail, IM, audio conferencing, video conferencing, Web conferencing, and group communication tools all live in their own disconnected silos. Each has evolved a separate operating platform—often with proprietary third-party technology—separate clients,authentication, separate administration, and separate storage and compliance. Add to that all of the consumer oriented tools and services we are using in our daily lives - the result is an enormous headache for the end user, who has to remember separate phone numbers, account names, and passwords. Plus, these users have limited communication with each device—for example, not being able to make audio calls from their computers. Ultimately, their communication is disconnected, and their collaboration and innovation are hindered. These independent silos, which now encompass enterprise and consumer, have led to redundancies and inefficiencies for the IT administrator as well. It has become difficult and expensive to maintain them and to ensure each is in compliance with business and government regulations, is secure and manageable in the long term. Final Build - The Microsoft Unified Communications Vision, Talking Points:Microsoft® Lync® 2013 is an enterprise-ready unified communications platform. Lync connects hundreds of millions of people everywhere, on Windows 8 and other devices, as part of their everyday productivity experience. Lyncreduces complexity by putting people at the center of the communications experience. Our goal is to integrate all of the ways we contact each other in a single environment— using a single client, identity – while providing businesses with the power to choose how they provision those services—whether on their own premises, as cloud services, or in a hybrid mode.Lync provides a consistent, single client experience for presence, instant messaging, voice, video and a great meeting experience. Lync delivers an experience that is differentiated from any other Unified Communications solution in the industry with best-of-breed integration in the Office family of apps. Lync users focus less on how to use the tools and direct their energy to meeting the needs of their business. With Lync as the UC platform, IT administrators are able to modernize their operations and simplify administration with Active Directory, common data store, and a shared set of archive and compliance tools, across multiple UC components (e.g. email and instant messaging).
- We think about the voice features in Lync broken out into four main areas – P2P calling, calling the PSTN, calling features necessary for an enterprise, and how we integrate with a customer’s existing infrastructure and network.

- For customers with multiple locations Lync makes a better case, the more locations the better it gets. Because of the interoperability of Lync with the other Office products, it can be managed by “one pane of glass”. You wouldn’t have to call a phone company to add a phone or move some lines around when you have a new employee. Or if employees are being moved around, even to another office, it’s plug and play.Some businesses with multiple offices are paying different phone companies for maintenance on different kinds of phone systems at different rates. I had a call with a client the other day who mentioned that every time he visited one of their branches he has to find a user guide on how to use that phone. With everyone being familiar with Outlook and Calendar the move to Lync is easily adaptable and intuitive. And the mobility is incredible, not just with smartphones and tablets but with your PC being your phone and in my case a laptop, I have my phone where ever I go. If I am in a hotel, between meetings at a Starbucks or in an airport lobby, I can make and receive phone calls or attend meetings…anywhere that I have Internet connectivity. That is extending the traditional office phone.
- With Peer to peer calling, or calling among Lync clients, first thing to know is that it’s extremely easy to use. End-users from customers around with world from a variety of different workstyles pick up Lync very quickly as a result of our commitment to user experience. When calling with Lync, you can connect all around the world on federated and public networks. Finally, we do this with an uncompromising audio and video experience.
- 1) Anywhere access without a Virtual Private Network (VPN) – I can connect from a coffee shop, hotel, my house – and have the same great calling experience as in the office.2 ) Fast redial and recent conversations – When I make calls, they’re all archived in Lync & outlook, including IMs and conferences too – that can be started up again with a single click.3) Extension Camp-on & tagging with presence – If I need to find someone and they’re not signed into Lync, I can “tag” their name for presence-based alerts and call them back directly.4) Easy access via Exchange & SharePoint
- Full-featured conversations between federated Lync deployments including collaboration, screen sharing, presence and video.Skype presence, IM & audio federation with Lync – Skype provides an amazing opportunity for Lync customers to connect with the huge Skype user base with a rich communications experience.Note: Windows Live Messenger was retired in April 2013 and is no longer available or supported on most Mac and Windows operating systems. – Replaced by Skype
- USB device switching and optimization means that end-users can easily move their calls around between any of the devices connected to their workstation.Optimized media with wideband audio and high-definition video – from the device to the networking code in Lync we provide the highest quality AV experience possible.Call quality application and real-time quality indicator – Before a call is made, a user can check that voice quality will be sufficient given their setup & network.Network health indicator - as your call progresses, the end-user gets direct feedback on how the quality of the network, acoustics and more impact the call.

- When we call out to the PSTN, we think of not only having this directly integrated with the Lync client, but also bringing in Location, emergency dialing and great call management features in a very easy to use manner.
- Dial by name and by number – Anywhere you have a name, you can have click to dial – we provide it out of the box in apps like Office & SharePoint.Integrated dial pad – for those users who want a traditional dial-pad experience, we have that as well both in the main window & in conversations.Contact list PSTN numbers – end-users can manage their contact list however they choose, including ‘pinning’ phone numbers up on the list.Dial from Internet Explorer – any time a phone number shows up on a web page, Lync will make that a clickable item for fast calling.
- Call forwarding – when one doesn’t want to have a call show up on Lync, I can have it forwarded to another person, phone number or to Voice Mail.Simultaneous ringing – Allows the end-user to have calls go to their colleagues, a delegate, mobile device or another PSTN number. Administrators additionally have the ability to policy both of these features, including the phone numbers that the calls will be routed to.Personal call handling with Exchange – Exchange Unified Messaging provides a rich suite of call handing capability inside voicemail, including custom prompts and simple voice response to create find-me-follow-me style scenarios.
- Emergency dialing with location – when using an E911 service provider that supports SIP Trunking, Lync can deliver the caller’s location information directly to emergency services. Lync also supports a traditional ELIN circuit-based model for E911 through our gateway partners.Malicious call tracing allows an end-user to report a suspicious or threatening call to the administrators.Location-based number translation means that based on the location of the end-user, Lync will dynamically update number translation for emergency dialing in order to support local calling conventions.

- Data center failover & branch office WAN survivability allows for continued operation of Lync voice across a variety of failed network scenarios.Resilient to the network conditions, both through policy with call admission control across the Wide Area Network (WAN), and through DSCP marking (Quality of Service) ensure that the different types of traffic generated by Lync (voice, video, application sharing, and file transfer) can be applied to unique paths in the network.Internet-ready media stack with adaptive codecs means that we will automatically adjust the bit rate of the codec depending on the condition of the network.
- Built-in interoperability and integration – from the start Lync has been designed for interoperability, from video through devices and infrastructure.Complete virtualization support means that every Lync role can run supported and scale great on a virtual machine.Centralized deployment provides an IT Pro a single place to go for the Lync topology management that defines an entire deployment.
