The HPGS Pump is offered with a range of Synchronous Magnet Drives rated to match prime-mover
performance, enabling the ability to cater to all denominations within prime-mover specifications.
Maximum use has been made of components from the HMD Kontro range of ANSI and ISO pumps
to ensure optimum interchangeability of parts. Standard materials of construction are of stainless steel

The Kontro Quarterly Salutes Luca Finotti
The Kontro Quarterly is proud to salute HMD Kontro Project
Manager, Luca Finotti. Luca has been with HMD Kontro
for 12 years with a total of 14 years of experience working with
mag sealless pumps.
As Luca recently declared, “HMD is very supportive when it comes
to personal development. It has given me the opportunity to
train during my years with the company. I feel I’m a much better
employee and remain very grateful for HMD Kontro’s continuing
investment in me.”
Like Luca, many of his colleagues have extensive experience working
in the liquid handling industry. No matter how challenging customer
applications can be, everyone has managed to meet their require-
ments. With every challenge, Luca and his peers have interesting
stories to tell.
Luca recently welcomed the arrival of a second daughter, making
weekends a very busy time. He loves to spend time with family and
friends. He also enjoys playing badminton and watching his favorite
English soccer team play AC Milan.
As Luca gets ready for his favorite company activity, the HMD Kontro

Original equipment manufacturers worldwide have discovered
the benefits of the High-Pressure GS when checking the density
of fluids passed through a high-pressure pipeline. The pump
is used on pipeline skids to take a sample of the fluid from the
main product stream. The sample is then passed through what
is called the densitometer, which analyses the fluid, after which the
fluid is returned to the main pipeline.
The HPGS Pump is designed to operate from -40°F to 400°F
without the need for any ancillary cooling medium. It is capable
of handling solids up to 150 microns.

Detection of temperature at the casing can do little
to provide protection for sealless pumps. By the time
pump casing temperature has risen, damage may
have occurred in the heart of the magnetic drive.
A temperature probe, known as an RTD or Thermo-
couple, in intimate contact with the containment shell,
will provide excellent protection for a large number of
operational problems. Heat is generated inside the
magnetic coupling due to eddy currents generated on
the containment shell. Any interruption to the flow of
liquid to the coupling will result in rising temperatures.
The following situations may be detected:
1 - Dry Run
2 - Running against close discharge valve
(Temperature will rise slowly)
3 - Decoupling of magnetic drive
4 - Internal flow holes blocked by solids / polymerized
pumpage. (Temperature rise will depend on rate
of blockage)
5 - Solids between inner magnet and shroud
(Temperature will rise slowly)
6 - Inner magnet rubbing on shroud
(Temperature will rise quickly)
What is the difference between
a resistance temperature detector
(RTD) and a thermocouple? Both RTDs and
thermocouples are sensors used to measure heat in
scales, such as Fahrenheit and Kelvin. Such devices are
used in a broad range of applications and settings, often
presenting the dilemma of choosing to use either RTDs or
thermocouples. Each kind of temperature sensor has its
own advantages and disadvantages that make it suitable
for certain conditions and circumstances.
Resistance Thermometer Detectors (RTDs)
The electrical resistance of metals rises as heat increases
and the metals become hotter, while their electrical
resistance falls as heat decreases and the metals become
colder. RTDs are temperature sensors that use the
changes in the electrical resistance of metals to measure
the changes in the local temperature. For the readings
to be interpretable, the metals used in RTDs must have
electrical resistances known to people and recorded for
convenient reference. As a result, copper, nickel, and
platinum are all popular metals used in the construction
of RTDs.
Thermocouples
Thermocouples are temperature sensors that use two
different metals in the sensor to produce a voltage that
can be read to determine the local temperature. Differ-
ent combinations of metals can be used in building the
thermocouples to provide different calibrations with
different temperature ranges and sensor characteristics.
