Ethical Checklist applied to a Personal Experience
1.
2. In the summer of 2008 while working at the “Department of
Transportation” I encountered a situation that appeared to be the
classic scenario of a manager who had an infactuation for a
subordinate. The first incident occurred during a company luncheon
when the manager made –in my opinion- an inappropriate statement
to the woman of interest that implied his attraction to her. My
recognition of the situation wasn’t a direct result of his statement but
rather the reaction that my coworker demonstrated.
3. After the first encounter with the presumed unethical situation I took
it upon myself to approach my coworker to investigate the details
pertaining to the issue at hand. She was an initially reluctant to
provide me with any details but after several days she came forward
and informed me about our manager’s constant persuance of a
romantic relationship with her.
Here’s a little backstory to provide you with further details about this
situation, my coworker was 28 years old and a single mother to two
children. This job was her only source of income. Her situation drew
a deep resemblence to my upbringing. I too was raised in a single
parent family where my mother worked tirelessly to provide for us.
After hearing these details I made it clear to my coworker that she
didn’t have to subdue to any advances made towards her just
because that person was in a management role.
4. At the time I wasn’t sure what my options were. In all honesty I felt
the same way my coworker did, hopeful that this whole situation
would somehow dissipate. When you’re young and in the work place
there’s very much this feeling of uncertainty about the business
culture around you. You begin to wonder how the decisions you
make will impact your future growth within the organization.
5. I considered the consequences of approaching my manager and his
supervisors with this information. I also considered the impact of
doing nothing.
I also began to consult friends and family outside of work to get a
clearer indication of the different perspectives towards the suitable
approach to conclude this problem.
6. As a result of the personality traits that I possessed, it was clear to
me that I would be the most appropriate person in this situation to
bring forth this issue to our upper management.
7. Prior to my meeting with our upper management officials I began to
reconsider/doubt my approach to this problem. I ran the differents
scenarios in my head with great reluctance. In the end it was
apparent that what our manager’s advances were inappropriate and
had to be put to an end.
8. On the day prior to my meeting I spoke with my coworker to inform
her that I was going to take a stance on her behalf. I reiterated the
fact that the work environment isn’t a place to feel threatened or
bullied. I also made it clear that I would do my best to make sure
every detail of the situation remained in the strickest of confidence.
My meeting with various management officials lasted roughly an
hour or so. The results were everything that I had hoped for, I
received praise and recognition for my actions and my coworker was
immediately moved into a department that she found to be a more
suitable work environment. Shortly after this incident I received a
job offer out of state which I accepted but I still remain in contact
with my coworker. She continues to thrive in the position that she’s
currently at, and be of all she hasn’t had any contact from our
previous manager.
