Escape from the office
Worldwide call to multidisciplinary thinkers,
designers and students: What will you need
in the future, to do your work?
Context of Call:
In a series of 3 years, Stulens - Home to Offices is reaching out to all the new creatives of
tomorrow, still studying or already out in the field - be it product or interior designer or art student
or creative in the broadest sense of the word - to rethink the way people work.
Work and its place of action, the office, is being challenged in this era. We, the workers - be it
independents, 9 to 5ers or half parent half a bit of everything combiners. Escapism is the word
that comes to mind these days when it comes to work. Everywhere but home, or office or one
single work spot, what is wanted is to escape the usual fixed spot for meetings, brainstorms,
sketching, planning, thinking, proper work in any form possible.
Different than a few years ago where the Googles and Yahoos were advertising their comfy cosy
wombs and cocoons of play, live, eat, sleep and work as all in one. Concepts for having employees
to never escape the building were complete, including ski lifts, fake grass and snow, animals and
plants adding up to the realness of the story. Highly organic, seemingly chaotic and opposite to
the systematic offices where patterns and settings were machine made and fake walls prefab,
work was solitary almost except for when peeping beyond the fences. Work and its office have
been constantly changing face and body over the years.
We believe that the idea of office has come to its bare minimum in this era. What is work? What
is our status when doing that task that is needed? Are we revolting against the constantly seated,
fighting to be a good boy and act strict and focused? We think not, there is too much impatience
implemented in our lifestyle, online, in taste and actions, the new generation thinks and does
different (again). A bit of everything, now and then, here and there. Punk and classic, in a garden
of silence, a noisy café and at the buzzing library, we combine it all.
And so. What is our state of work these days, we are talking specifics here. The moment of
hopping on a bike and having with us: perhaps nothing more than what our basket can carry,
laptop or ipad, notebook, some paper, an agenda, and while biking, naughty boy and girl: iphone
scrolling through events and posts, e-mails even. Work is different and perhaps not claimed to be
work as such. But that moment when stepping away from the usual office, and meeting someone
to collaborate with during a momentum, it needs a new concept. A suitcase or package or basket
or cocoon or origami unfoldable office of the new century. Or maybe even beyond material
artefacts: a multidiscplinary approach or service/app that help you design your work and align it
with your collaborators, improve that network clic, combining digital with the tactile. What gives
us the liberty we want and yet the support we need? What form is this, and what function does it
have? Multiple functionality for multiple disciplines.
That new work equipment, object, form, surrounding, system, concept, element that serves in the
interior and exterior and is easy transportable. We think by bike, by foot (yes, gone is the car).
What is your vision on this? What would that concept look like?
This call is to support the build of that future, create a hub for those in love with ecological health,
craftsmanship and heart for Earth and its inhabitants. Clever too, witty even.
This is a call to challenge the present and to draw the future. This is a call that will be well
rewarded with tools of knowledge and experience to grow as an artist, designer and thinker. This
is a call to establish a global vision on new design, global thinking and local implementing.
Briefing of Call:
Think and rethink what is needed to be able to work in these new times. What object,
construction or tool can be carried along, by foot or by bike, to be set up somewhere: in the city
or out in the open. Think of weight, material, construction, yes, but within the bounds of a concept.
Sketch, draw, collage, dream and visualise that same dream.
The call implies the new you will work anywhere possible: in the fields as it is a beautiful day and
a picnic is combined, in the city center on a bench under a tree, the library, anywhere. This act
of ‘work’ will be done alone, together with someone or in the form of a a meeting with a bunch.
The call is for a solitary ‘work tool’. Yet, the new you is a social being and combines moments of
ultimate concentration amidst a busy coffee shop with buzzing brainstorms with enthusiasm of
virtual or real fellow companions.
Office work like we know it, will no longer exist, we think. Rethink what is needed to be able to
carry along to go to work, anywhere. Something that supports your needs and vision.
What will you need in the future, to do your work?
Concept specifics of Call:
The object or construction or tool must be able to be carried along by bike or by foot. The weight
is hypothetically doable for an adult person. What is needed for this out-of-the-office escape
is basic: mobile phone, ipad or laptop, paper and pen, notebook or agenda. Drinks maybe too,
depending on the heat and whereabouts. Wether you a city purpose, be it a library or café or city
bench or the out in the fields or woods approach, where there are no people or benches, your
concept will be innovative and produce a smile. The focus is on the concept, you are free to be
very specific on details, but this is not a must.
Use visuals, sketches, texts to make the idea crystal clear.
Q: Can I make a 3D render or model and add the picture on the presentation? A: YES
Q: Can I use mood pictures that are not mine to visualise the concept? A: NO
Q: Can I be dreamy and invent something that is not yet possible to produce? A: YES
Q: Can I add functions to it that are personally influenced? A: YES
Q: Can I collaborate with several creatives if I mention all names? A: YES
Q: Can I enter more than 1 concept? A: YES
Q: Will the copyright of the concept remain with the creator? A: YES
Q: Does the creator by participating automatically agrees that Stulens and its partners have
promotional + exhibition publicity rights over the concept, within the context of the Call? A: YES
Technical specifics of Call:
The concept is delivered digitally and presented on a landscape A1 size (84x59,4cm) pdf or jpeg,
200 dpi, rgb. The file is named after the contact person: Surname_Name_Title_City_Country.pdf —
On the presentation no personal name or signature or company logo is placed. The jury must have
an objective judgement.
A seperate text file lists all people collaborating: full names, contact details per person (phone +
e-mail + website), individual city and country name are listed. Also in this text file: the company or
school (name + url) of every person and last but not least: the file name.
The pdf/jpg + txt file will sent through by email (<2mb) or via wetransfer (> 2mb)
to mobilitycall@stulens.be by January 24, 2016, 23:00 (GMT) latest.
