The fear of the getting started process tends to make people procrastinate in
starting an online business of their own. That fear usually boils down to the fact
that they just don’t know how to do it, or where to even start. This guide will help
you with this process, so you can lay your fears to rest and move through the
getting started phase with ease.

Let’s start with some commonly asked questions that most newbies have in the
getting started process.

“Do I have to have special skills or degrees to start my own online
business?”

You will need to have some knowledge in the field you’re going to embark in, but
it’s not necessary to have any business or college degrees to accomplish starting
your own business. Of course, it will depend on the type of business you want to
start.

College degrees and experience are always helpful in gaining expertise in a field,
but you usually don’t have to have any degrees to have your own online business.
Knowledge has more power online, so reading everything you can get your hands
on that deals with your field will more important.

“Will it cost a lot of money?”

Starting your own online business doesn’t generally cost much money. The
money you put into it is mostly for a computer, internet access and a website.

“Will I still be able to start my own business online, even if I’ve never
run my own business before?”

Absolutely. Hundreds of Internet Marketers have started their own businesses
and made a success of it without having any previous business experience. Again,
it all adds up to how much time and effort you put into your research.

“How much money can I make from an online business?”

This will vary on one factor - how much time and effort you put into it.

Some hard working internet marketers make a six figure income, while others (tle
lazyones) make the same amount a full time fast food worker generally makes.

“Do I need special business licenses to run an online business?”

You will want to check with your local government agencies to determine what
you will need in your area. Each area is different, so it’s best to check and see
what you need before starting your business.

To make money online you just need to complete the following steps:

1. Find a market with potential buyers

2. Build a website

3. Find a product to promote

4. Generate traffic to your website

5. Scale it!

How To Find A Market

When selling a product, a lot of people make the mistake of developing their
product first, and then trying to find a market for it. Of course, the process should
be reversed.

Find a market first that spends money, then find out what they want
and give it to them.

It is certainly easier said than done, but there are a lot of places online where you
can do your market research for free. They've done most of the work for you
already. You just need to know where to go and what to do to connect all the dots.

1. Brainstorm potential markets/niches

Here are a few ways you can do this:

• You first website should be related to your own hobbies and interests
• Look at the magazine rack in your local newsagent for ideas
• Identify current hot trends

To identify current hot trends check out the hottest search trends at Google Hot
Trends.

Yahoo! Buzz is another site, like Google Hot Trends, where you can review the
latest trends and look for hot topics to explore further

eBay Pulse is a great place that allows you to browse the Top 10 Most popular
searches in every category and subcategory . This tool is based on actual searches
performed by eBay users.

Select the category first then look for potential sub-niches by then selecting a
sub-category.

Also, always check the largest stores as well to see what they’re selling. There has
to be a reason they are the largest stores. They must be doing something right.

Yahoo! Shopping is an excellent shopping portal to explore for potential
markets/niches

2. Identify more targeted keyword phrases for each of the
markets/niches

You need to open up Google’s keyword tool which is located here:

Enter your phrase into the search box, set the languages and country search to
‘USA’ (USA is the best market in the world) and choose ‘English’ as the language

After doing this, click ‘Get Keyword Ideas’ to generate the results.

3. Determine whether or not a particular niche is profitable

Now that you have some potential niches to work with, you want to see how much
of a market there is there. Fortunately, there is a very simple way to determine
whether or not a particular niche is profitable. The answer can be found at
Google.com – type in your keyword phrase and click search:

As you can see there are 8 people bidding on this term using Google Adwords.
These are the paid ads on the right-hand side of Google. If there are people
paying money to bid on a particular keyword phrase, then you know that this
market is profitable.

How To Build A Website

It`s easy to build a a professional looking website today – even if you don`t know
html. You will need:

1. domain name
2. hosting
3. ftp client
4. wordpress with new theme and plugins
5. content – videos and articles

1. Domain name – Sign up for the free account at Namecheap - choose I
register for : Business. Namecheap is the best registrar I've ever done business
with. Then login and click Register a Domain ==> Free Domain Features. Search
for available domains. Important tips:

– buy domain name containing your keyword phrase,
– only choose .com available domains,
– if “yourkeywordphrase.com” is already registered add the, about, tips,
reviews, articles, club etc.
– don`t buy domains with hyphens or numbers
– avoid copyright infringement – don`t use registered trademarks like pepsi,
microsoft, google etc.

Example: my keyword phrase is “deep sea fishing”, deepseafishing.com is taken,
so I would buy thedeepseafishing.com which is available. I wouldn`t buy deep-
sea-fishing.com nor 1deepseafishing2.com

2. Hosting – you need reliable virtual (aka shared) hosting. I can recommend
these companies:

– Hostgator – Business package for 14,95$ per month
– Atci Hosting – Virtual-01 for $14.95 per month
– BlueHost – Basic plan for 95,4$ per year

After purchase login to your hosting account and add MySQL database. Copy
Database Name, Username and Password to notepad – this information will be
needed to wordpress instalation.

The welcome email you received from your hosting company provides you with
the name servers you need to change your domain to. Login to your Namecheap
account and click Manage Domains. Click your domain name and Transfer DNS
to Webhost on the left. Enter name servers and click Save Changes.

3. Ftp Client – you need ftp client to upload content of your website to your
server. Choose one of these clients: FileZilla or WinSCP. Both clients are free
to use. Install the client on your PC and add new site profile – check out the
welcome email from your hosting company for required information.

4. Wordpress – it is the best publishing platform available, it can easily be
optimized for search engines and it is free to use.
Go to Wordpress for the latest stable release. Download it to your computer into
directory wordpress and unzip it. Rename the wp-config-sample.php file to wp-
config.php. Open wp-config.php in notepad and fill in your database details -
Database Name, Username and Password . Put your Authentication Unique Keys
– use random strings of letters and numbers.

Then go to Wordpress Themes and choose nice looking theme – check out the
Most Popular themes. Download this theme to your HDD (into directory
wordpress/themes) and unpack it.

Now go to Wordpress Plugins and search for the following plugins:

– All in One Seo Pack
– All in One Adsense and Ypn
– AddThis
– Yet Another Related Posts Plugin
Download all plugins to your computer (into directory wordpress/plugins) and
unpack them.
Launch your FTP client and connect to the web server at your web host provider.
Upload all contents of the unzipped WordPress directory (but excluding the
directory itself) into the root directory of your domain (“public_html/” at
Bluehost and Hostgator, “htdocs/ “ at Atcihosting).
Upload all contents of the unzipped theme directory (including the directory
itself) into wp-content/themes/
Upload all contents of the unzipped plugin directories (including directories)
into wp-content/plugins/
Upload all contents of directory “yarpp-templates” into wp-content/themes/your
theme directory/.
Type in http://www.yourdomainame.com/wp-admin/install.php in your web
browser. WordPress is installed. Login to admin panel and delete first post and
all links.
Go to AddThis and sign up for the free account. Click Get Your Button on the top:

click Get The Code and copy code to notepad.

Configuring Wordpress - Settings

in Notepad, paste the code and save a file as htaccess.txt. Upload this file to root
directory of your domain and change its name to .htaccess.

Your website is ready – now fill it with content.

5. Content – you need two types of content for your website – videos and
articles.
Videos: go to YouTube and search for your keyword phrase

Watch all videos and choose 3-5 the best ones. Write title and short description
for every video, copy the embed code and save it all in notepad file.

Articles:
1. Download more than 10000 free PLR articles from Free Website Content.
You just need to rewrite them.
2. You can buy article packs from All Private Label Content or EasyPLR
3. You can hire a freelance at Get A Freelancer
4. You can write them yourself

You need about 10-15 articles and 3-5 videos for your site.

How To Find A Product
There are thousands of affiliate programs on the net. For start I recommend these
Affiliate Programs:

1. Amazon has been launched in 1995. It started as an online bookstore, but
soon diversified to product lines of VHS, DVD, music CDs and MP3s,
computer software, video games, electronics, apparel, furniture, food, toys,
and so on.

2. ClickBank is the Internet's leading retailer of digital products. ClickBank
is now used by over 10,000 web businesses and 100,000 affiliates to
deliver their products and services instantly over the Internet, with Ebooks
and software the main purchases.

3. Commission Junction is the largest affiliate network in North America,
powering 53% of the top 500 web retailers affiliate marketing programs
and operates worldwide Commission Junction offers many products in
almost any thinkable niche.

4. Market Health is the leading marketing network of the Beauty, Health,
Weight loss and Skin care industries. Market Health offers a 50 % per sale
initial commission to new affiliates with a potential raise to 60 % per sale.

5. MoreNiche is UK based marketing network dedicated to Beauty, Health
and Weight Loss niches. MoreNiche offers hundreds of good quality,
unique products to promote and awesome marketing tools – free articles,
website templates and guides on traffic generation.

6. NeverBlue is leading CPA Affiliate Network. The company is based out of
Canada and is known for focusing on quality offers and personal services
towards their affiliates. NeverBlue has a wide selection of offers to choose
from - over 3000 campaigns in various niches.

7. Google Adsense is a great CPC program that lets regular webmaster tap
into the revenue that Google collects from displaying its sponsored links.

The beautiful part is that Google will serve you the targeted links - links
that are usually relevant to your site's content.

Usually it takes some time to be accepted by affiliate programs. After acceptance
start to look for the products related to your niche.

Clickbank – log in to your account, click Marketplace and search for your
keyword phrase:

When you find interesting product, click create Hoplink:

copy and paste your Account Nickname and click Create.

Copy link to a product and HTML code to notepad.

Amazon – there are several options to promote Amazon products. In my
opinion the best is to build Amazon Widgets. Log in to your account, click
Widgets and then Carousel Widget. Choose 6-10 products and click Next step.
Change Orientation to Ferris Wheel and Widget Size to 160x600. Then click Add
to my Web page and copy HTML code.

Now it`s time to put ads on your site:

– Google Adsense - Activate Yet Another Adsense Plugin and configure
it:
– Adsense ID taken from your Adsense account,
– Ad Formats To Show - change to 468x60,
– Colors – leave blank for default colors,
– Number of Ads to Show Per Page – change to 3,

– Add space between ad and blog text – change to 3 pixels

Traffic Generation

Sources of traffic:

1. Forums – Find message board communities that have topics that relate
to your website. Your website link could go in the signature line allowing
others to find their way to site to see what you have. Check with the rules
of the board first to make sure this is allowed. By posting regularly on
these forums, you can build credibility as an expert for that topic and gain
some trust with some potential consumers who may be thinking about
buying from you. Also, the other board members may refer people they
know to your site, so make sure you give back as much as you receive with
these communities. How to find forums in your target market? Go to
BigBoards - huge directory that lists the largest forums online or search
the google for phrase "your keyword phrase" + forum

2. Blogs – Find blogs that have the same kind of topic as your website. Post
a reply on some of their posts. Your website link will be associated with
your name and those looking for more information on that topic will check
out your site or blog and see what you have to offer them. How to find
these blogs ? Go to Technorati – the biggest blog directory or search the
google for the following phrases:

site:blogspot.com +"Post a comment" +"your keyword phrase”

3. Social Bookmarking Sites – there are two types of social bookmarking
sites. To Digg, Reddit, Propeller, Mixx you can submit link to your article
or video; to Delicious, Mister Wong, Stumble Upon, Oyax, A1-Webmarks,
Jumptags, Netvouz you can submit link to your website.

4. Social Networking Sites – Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Linkedin.
When it comes to promoting your website on social networking sites, you
have two options. Your first option is to include a link to your website in
your community profile or profile page. The other way is to inform your
online friends of your website through private messages or newsletters.

Once you join a social networking website and create or join a network of
friends, you should easily be able to communicate with those
friends. Sending each of your friends a private message with information
and a link to your website tends to be more effective than just placing a
link in your profile or on your profile page.

5. Video sites – sign up for free account at biggest video sites - YouTube,
Dailymotion and Metacafe. There are to options to promote your site. Your
first option is to include a link to your website in your profile and start to
comment on popular videos. Your second option is to make video using
Windows Movie Maker or Camtasia, upload this video and include link to
your site in video description.

6. Article directories – write or buy unique article and submit it to article
directories - GoArticles, EzineArticles and ArticlesBase. Add a link to your
website in the author’s bio section provided on the article directory sites.
These directory sites usually rank well with the search engine results page,
so someone stumbling upon one of your articles submitted within a
directory can find their way over to your website for more information on
that topic.

7. Press Releases - This option can be used if you’re just opening your
doors or if you’re offering a discount or special sale. Press Releases are
submitted to sites that publish them for internet users who are looking for
specific information.
They are written as if they’re a news story and they showcase your “news”
with eye catching and attention grabbing headlines and information. Your
sale, discount or business startup would get plenty of exposure to potential
consumers and clients.
A well written press release to announce what you are offering may just be
what you need to drive a huge amount of traffic to your business website.
Consider having one done on a period basis to help keep your business’

Important note: You don`t need to use all of these traffic generation techniques!
Better choose 3-4 methods and focus on them until you become an expert. For
example:
– one submission to Digg could bring in thousands of visitors – if it reach front
page;
– one interesting or controversial video uploaded to YouTube could be viewed
by hundreds of thousands people and bring thousands of visitors to your site;
– if your MySpace profile has several thousands of friends and you send them
newsletter “I`ve just made a new site about deep sea fishing, take a look at it”
you will get big traffic etc.

Scale It!

In contrary to scams “Make 6 figures income after one week” or “Make 2000 a
day tomorrow” you will not become millionaire overnight. Online business is like
every other business. You have to work at it consistently over time. You have to
build it. You have to re-invest your profits. There are two options to scale it and
make more and more money:

1. Constantly add more content to your website and generate more traffic
2. Build more websites

Both options are equally good. The choice is yours
