3. SHANGHAI 30s
The voice of Zhou Xuan
Inspired by the life of Zhou Xuan and her
music, the collection seeks to visualize
the intangible aspect of her life into gar-
ments. Her life journey in the era of 1930
shaped Shanghai today and her work
continue to inspire young musicians or
songstress.
A journey that is not forgotten will be
treasured through the age of time.
The collection uses Zhou Xuan’s
music as inspiration while cross refer-
encing 1930s in the east and the west.
Fusing these elements together, the
collection seeks to design a modern
and sophisticated women with a story
behind the prints and the choice of
colour. Deconstructing a cheongsam
and adding a twist to how it can po-
tentially be in everydays life today.

5. Jade, a type of mineral rock embraced by
the east as wealth and longevity, pos-
sessed a mellow shade of green that is
calming to look at. Strongly influence by
the purity and timelessness of jade, the
collection will be mainly represented by
jade green and black.
The green symbolize the glamourous
aspect of her life while the black repre-
sented her struggle with depression in
reality. The two contrasting factors nar-
rated by the prints with beautiful glows
of jade green while being overlayed with
black lines, grids and thorns.
Exploring ways to ignite people’s curi-
ousity as they engage with the prints
which shows two aspect of Zhou Xuan’s
life.

9. INDIGO
The colour of nature
My first introduction exposure to sus-
tainable design started with natural
indigo colour. As a textile student, I was
always curious why is there a need for
protective gears when handling reactive
dyes? A few grams for a few litres of
water we are ready to dye a few metres of
cloth. Little did I understand the chemi-
cals that penetrate the skin into our body
could be very harmful.
Indigo is one of the natural dye that
can still be found commonly use in
the industrial area. The most common
product that associates with indigo
will be the jeans. It has been around
for many years and redesigned many
times to suit its time.
This project is inspred by artisan jeans,
worn jeans and natural indigo dyes.
Looking into how we can minimize
waste by upcycling as well as other
methods of production to ease the
current harm in fashion production
industry.

11. Digital Printing have been a new and
upcoming trend in fashion production.
This production technique is suitable for
small scale production and allow us to
print on areas that we only need, thus
reducing wastage in ink and materials.
By using recycled jeans with digitally
printed garments, I wans to question the
production of what we wear.
Natural Dye with 100% natural ingredi-
ents. For this collection, I was exposed
to natural dye with mordant over the
conventional reactive dyes. These
method of dyeing has been used before
reactive dyes were invented. Although
natural dye can achieve amazing co-
lours, there method and preparation
makes it non-business friendly, thus
the industry avoided this method.
Natural Indigo dye is usually used with
a vat. However, the use of vat will also
result in higher waste in colour pig-
ments. Thus in this collection, a pro-
posed sprayed on indigo was used. By
spraying on the indigo, I was able to
control the density of the colour as
well as the amound use per garment.
This information are crucial to sustain-
ability documentation.

15. Inspired by Wabi-Sabi philosophy, Colour of Indigo tapped into the appreciation of
beauty in imperfection. This imperfection is potrayed by the prints and the upcylced ma-
terials used in the collection. Further embracing the philosophy, Colour of Indigo set itself
with sub-urban living culture. A place that preserve its ever lasting beauty through time
and age. The dull environment harmonize with the prints on the garments creating a bal-
ance between space and people.
