2.USE OF THE PASSIVE VOICE
 The passive voice is used when the focus is on the
action. It is not important or not known who or what
is doing the action.
3.FORM OF PASSIVE VERB AND
EXAMPLES
 Form.: Subject + form of to be+ Past Participle
Active: The doctor treats the patient.
-Present simple Example:
Passive: The patient is treated by the doctor.
Active: The doctor treated the patient .
Past simple Example:
Passive: The patient was treated by the doctor.
Active: The doctor has treated the patient.
Present perfect Example:
Passive: The patient has been treated by the doctor.
Active: The doctor had treated the patient.
Past perfect simple Example:
Passive: The patient had been treated by the doctor.
3.FORM OF PASSIVE VERB AND EXAMPLES

 Active: I am going to buy coffee this Saturday.
Future Going Example:
 Passive: Coffee is going to be bought this Saturday.


 Active: You must open the wine three hours before you use it
 -Must Example:
 Passive: The wine must be opened three hours before you use it.


 Active: You can open this window
 -Can Example:
 Passive: This window can be opened.


 Active: Mary should drink milk every morning.
 -Shoud Example:
 Passive: Milk should be drunk every morning by Mary.

4.ACTIVE TO PASSIVE TRANSFORMATION.
CHANGES IN THE SENTENCE
 To to form a passive sentence from
an active one we have to take into
account the following points.
 The object of the active sentence
becomes the subject in the passive
sentence.
 We have to use a form of the verb “to
be” + the past participle of the verb
that we have in the active sentence.
 The subject of the “active” sentence
becomes the object of the passive (or
is left out).
 Peter builds a beautiful house
 S VB DO

 A beautiful house is built by Peter
5. CHOOSE 5 SENTENCES IN THE ACTIVE VOICE AND
TURN THEM INTO PASSIVE VOICE.
 -Somebody has cleaned the room.
 The room has been cleaned.
 -They have postponed the concert
 The concert has been postponed.
 -Police arrested two people last night.
 Two people were arrested last night by Police.
 -Somebody is using the computer now.
 The computer is being used now.
 -They have built a new Hospital near the airport.
 A new Hospital has been built near the airport.
 -I have to paint the room.
 The room has to be painted.

The passive voice
