Why does it worth to study?
Humans are social beings and are affected by the relationships within their environment. It is found out that the problems that they experience in these relationships is one of the most important reason for people’s unhappiness. (Frone , 2000)
Interpersonal conflict et workplace
Overt and covert acts of conflict between people at work (Spector and Jex, 1998)

-Covert ex: Spreading rumors
Disagreements between subordinates, peers and/or supervisors (Rahim, 2001)
Incidence of conflict or conflict interactions which are continuous. It has more inclusive meaning than repeated actions of aggressive behaviors such as workplace bullying (Duffy, Ganster and Pagon, 2002)
2. Conflict
• Why does it worth to study?
• Humans are social beings and are affected by the
relationships within their environment. It is found out that the
problems that they experience in these relationships is one of
the most important reason for people’s unhappiness. (Frone ,
2000)
3. Conflict
Multi-phased and dynamic process
- Perception of conflict, feeeling conflict, tension, reflection of
conflict by behaviors, consequences of conflict (Pondy, 1967)
- Perception of conflict, emotions related to conflict, reflection
of conflict by behaviors, consequences of conflict (Thomas,
1976)
- One of the most comprehensive definition of conflict: (Putnam
and Poole, 1987) :
- The interaction of interdependent people who perceive
opposition of goals, aims, and values, and who see the other
party as potentially interfering with the realization of these
goals.
4. Interpersonal Conflict at Workplace
• Overt and covert acts of conflict between people at work
(Spector and Jex, 1998)
-Overt ex: Shouting
-Covert ex: Spreading rumors
• Disagreements between subordinates, peers and/or
supervisors (Rahim, 2001)
• Incidence of conflict or conflict interactions which are
continuous. It has more inclusive meaning than repeated
actions of aggressive behaviors such as workplace bullying
(Duffy, Ganster and Pagon, 2002)
5. Conflict Management
• Conflict Management Strategy: Conflict spesific reactions
• Conflict Management Style: General approach to conflict
• Rahim and Bonoma (1979) and Rahim (1983)
• Concern for Self and Concern for Others: The extent to which
a person tries to satisfy his/her needs & dersires or desires of
the other party
• The two facets describe five conflict management styles:
integrating, obliging, dominating, avoiding and compromising
6. Conflict Management
• Integrating style can be described as mutual high concern for
self and other party involved in conflict. Both parties try to
solve conflict by collaboration.
• Obliging style can be defined as sacrificing one’s own needs
and desires for satisfying the needs and desires of the other
party.
• Dominating style can be characterized with win-lose
orientation by both parties and involves high concern for self.
Both parties try to force the other party to accept his/her
demands and desires.
7. Conflict Management
• Avoiding style can be defined as mutual low concern for self
and other party involved in conflict. Avoiding involves ignoring
conflict, withdrawal from conflict and repression of conflict.
• Compromising style is associated with both parties’ sacrificing
some of their needs and desires.

Role of Leaders’ Conflict
Management Behavior on the
Conflict-Stress Relationship of
Employees
9. A Helping Hand? The Moderating Role of Leaders’
Conflict Management Behavior on the Conflict-
Stress Relationship of Employees
• Aim is to look at how leaders’ conflict management behavior
affects employees’ well- being.
• Model:
10. A Helping Hand? The Moderating Role of Leaders’
Conflict Management Behavior on the Conflict-
Stress Relationship of Employees
• Literature:
• Karen Horney (1945, 1950). There are certain tendencies of
people when faced with confflict. These are moving toward ,
moving against and moving away .
• This can be applied to leader’s conflict management behaviors
• Moving toward -> Mediational behavior
• Moving against -> Forcing behavior
• Moving away -> Avoiding behavior
• Ex: Combination of moving toward and moving against ->
Intravention
11. A Helping Hand? The Moderating Role of Leaders’
Conflict Management Behavior on the Conflict-
Stress Relationship of Employees
• Method: Online questionnaires were applied to 145 people who
are employees in an insurance company.
• Measures:
• Regarding conflict types; Jehn’s (1995) conflict scale to measure
relationship & task conflict. Jehn and Mannix’s (2001) process
conflict scale (Rating on a 7-point-Likert scale)
• Regarding conflict stress measure developed by Giebels and
Janssen (2005) (Rating on a 7-point-Likert scale)
12. A Helping Hand? The Moderating Role of Leaders’
Conflict Management Behavior on the Conflict-
Stress Relationship of Employees
• Measures:
• For third party conflict management behaviors adaptation of
items from the Dutch test for Conflict Handling. Subscales were
rewritten to fit the third-party role of leader. (Rating on a 5-point-
Likert scale)
• Control variable: need for leadership; scale developed by Martin
(1983). (Rating on a 7-point-Likert scale)
13. A Helping Hand? The Moderating Role of Leaders’
Conflict Management Behavior on the Conflict-
Stress Relationship of Employees
• Results:
• Relationship, task and process conflict are positively
correlated with conflict-related stress.
• The perception that leaders engaged in third-party problem
solving behavior had a buffering effect on the association
between relationship conflict and conflict-related stress.
• The perception that leaders engaged in third-party forcing
behavior amplified the effects of conflict on conflict-related
stress for all conflict types.
• The perception that leaders engaged in third-party avoiding
behavior strenghtened the effects of conflict on conflict-
related stress for task conflict.
14. A Helping Hand? The Moderating Role of Leaders’
Conflict Management Behavior on the Conflict-
Stress Relationship of Employees
• Limitations and Future Research:
• Whether conflict-related stress is a consequence of conflict or
an antecedent
• The effects of leader’s third-party conflict management on
other outcomes (perfomance, innnovative behavior, etc.) can
be searched.
15. A Helping Hand? The Moderating Role of Leaders’
Conflict Management Behavior on the Conflict-
Stress Relationship of Employees
• Limitations and Future Research:
• This study focuses on employees’ perceptions of leaders’
third-party behavior, rather than the actual leader behavior.
Controlled experiments or observational studies can be done
to examine leaders’ actual behavior.
• To verify subjective measure of well–being next research
should use objective data such as absenteeism and
performance.
• Cultural aspects, gender and other leader conflict behaviors
should be taken into account.

Informal Third Parties and
Interpersonal Conflict
17. A Little Help From Our Friends:
Informal Third Parties and Interpersonal Conflict
• Aim is to find third party responses and the victim’s feeling
about the transgressor and in general
• Literature:
• Formal third parties – Informal third parties
• Is the relationship restored through forgiveness or not
restored?
• Method: Qualitatively exploring victims’ personal accounts by
constructivist-grounded theory.
• Partcipants: 194 undergraduate students introductory-level
psychology or scientific reasoning course university in
Southern Ontario.
18. A Little Help From Our Friends:
Informal Third Parties and Interpersonal Conflict
• Results:
• Narratives in two categories: Those who appeared to forgive
the transgressor and those who did not.
• Supportive responses and nonsupportive responses.
• Supportive responses: Validated the victim’s interpretation of
the event or offered general emotional support and well-
intended advice to console the victim. Cognitive role /
affective role. Each, both or neither?
• Common person for support; 1) Friend 2) Mother 3) Romantic
partner and other family members.
• Mostly offering emotional support (%42)
• Mostly unforgiving ( %66)
19. A Little Help From Our Friends:
Informal Third Parties and Interpersonal Conflict
• Results:
• Third-party response and forgiveness were significantly related.
When victims received both emotional support and validation
the difference was significant for more than three fourths
didn’t forgive.
• Type of the support is important:
• Encouragement for a different perspective, practical advice, or
explicit validation by telling the victim that he/she has a right
to be upset. -> Forgiveness
• Villainization of the offender and the expression of anger on
the victim’s behalf, encouragement to confront the offender, or
the opportunity to “vent” the victims’s anger. ->Unforgiveness
20. A Little Help From Our Friends:
Informal Third Parties and Interpersonal Conflict
• Results:
• Tone of the support is important:
• Validation and emotional support -> high affective cognitive
consistency for unforgiveness.
• Unsupportive -> Unforgiveness & feelings of upset
• Same third-party response -> individuals’ response differ.
Why ? (Personality of the individual or whether transgressor
apologized or not.)
21. A Little Help From Our Friends:
Informal Third Parties and Interpersonal Conflict
• Results:
• Forgiveness & unforgiveness -> Third party response made
victims feel better in general. Even if they didn’t help facilitate
forgiveness, but it will reduce the negative emotions associated
with unforgiveness.
• There are differences in the types of support offered by
different third parties. It may also be that the third parties we
approach depend on whether we are inclined to forgive or not.
22. A Little Help From Our Friends:
Informal Third Parties and Interpersonal Conflict
• Limitations:
• Lacking interview technique -> Clarifications were unclear
• More refined coding and interpretations -> demographic info
not to be included.
• Directions for future study:
• To understand the process of forgiveness in detail a
longitudinal design can be preferred.
• Respondents may categorize the third party’s response
themselves according to the categories uncovered in this study.
• Forgiveness can be affected by the interaction of characteristics
of the victim and the offender.
