Every	
  year	
  in	
  May	
  young	
  creatives	
  take	
  the	
  streets	
  of	
  Johannesburg	
  in	
  a	
  way	
  that	
  has	
  never	
  been	
  done	
  before	
  yet	
  
familiar	
  to	
  every	
  one	
  of	
  us	
  Joburgers.	
  The	
  team	
  brings	
  forward	
  vivid	
  images	
  of	
  the	
  lives	
  of	
  Joburgers.	
  The	
  photo	
  
series	
  unashamedly	
  idolizes	
  the	
  city	
  and	
  elevates	
  it	
  to	
  deity	
  status	
  by	
  suggesting	
  that	
  each	
  and	
  every	
  one	
  of	
  us	
  
recites	
  an	
  unconscious	
  prayer	
  to	
  this	
  concrete	
  God	
  everyday.	
  	
  

The	
  everyday	
  scenes	
  of	
  vagabonds	
  in	
  South	
  Africa’s	
  traffic	
  intersections	
  inspired	
  this	
  mirroring	
  photo	
  shoot.	
  The	
  idea	
  
twisted	
  and	
  exchanged	
  roles	
  removing	
  the	
  hobo	
  and	
  replacing	
  it	
  with	
  you!	
  The	
  “normal”	
  	
  citizen	
  who	
  is	
  supposedly	
  
contends	
  with	
  “less”	
  problems	
  because	
  you	
  have	
  a	
  home	
  to	
  sleep	
  in	
  every	
  night,	
  probably	
  a	
  car	
  and	
  three	
  meals	
  a	
  
day.	
  The	
  series	
  then	
  asked	
  is	
  it	
  really	
  the	
  case?	
  Are	
  “normal”	
  or	
  “comfortable”	
  citizenz	
  living	
  without	
  problems,	
  and	
  if	
  
they	
  do	
  are	
  they	
  less	
  “tragic”	
  or	
  worthy	
  of	
  donations	
  monetary	
  or	
  otherwise	
  from	
  strangers?	
  Within	
  the	
  20	
  seconds	
  
you	
  spend	
  at	
  a	
  traffic	
  light,	
  a	
  homeless	
  person	
  wielding	
  a	
  piece	
  of	
  cardboard	
  laden	
  with	
  carefully	
  planned	
  writing	
  
regardless	
  of	
  the	
  shattered	
  grammar	
  can	
  tell	
  you	
  his	
  whole	
  life	
  story	
  and	
  have	
  you	
  retched	
  with	
  guilt	
  for	
  driving	
  that	
  
car	
  or	
  even	
  having	
  clothes	
  with	
  no	
  holes	
  in	
  them.	
  The	
  stories	
  they	
  write	
  always	
  have	
  a	
  secret	
  weapon	
  or	
  a	
  trump	
  
card.	
  The	
  words	
  “May	
  God	
  Bless	
  You”	
  are	
  as	
  good	
  to	
  a	
  homeless	
  person	
  as	
  a	
  bank	
  guaranteed	
  check.	
  Is	
  there	
  a	
  
better	
  guarantee/tool	
  than	
  an	
  all-­‐powerful	
  entity	
  responsible	
  for	
  your	
  existence?	
  	
  

But	
  who	
  is	
  there	
  to	
  help	
  you	
  with	
  your	
  supposedly	
  “easy”	
  problems?	
  Who	
  is	
  there	
  to	
  help	
  an	
  accountant	
  who	
  is	
  
ravaged	
  by	
  debt	
  yet	
  lives	
  in	
  a	
  mansion	
  and	
  drives	
  a	
  posh	
  car?	
  Who	
  is	
  there	
  to	
  help	
  him	
  with	
  change?	
  Is	
  there	
  help	
  for	
  
a	
  self-­‐confessed	
  gluttonous	
  and	
  greedy	
  B.E.E.	
  struggle	
  hero	
  who	
  religiously	
  prays	
  for	
  another	
  tender	
  after	
  several	
  
already	
  won	
  and	
  squandered?	
  How	
  about	
  a	
  white	
  male	
  UCT	
  grad	
  that	
  cannot	
  start	
  a	
  business	
  because	
  he	
  has	
  a	
  low	
  
B.E.E	
  rating	
  in	
  a	
  land	
  of	
  native	
  Africans?	
  The	
  series	
  supposes	
  that	
  in	
  all	
  our	
  differences	
  each	
  and	
  every	
  one	
  of	
  us	
  has	
  a	
  
prayer	
  to	
  be	
  fulfilled.	
  A	
  prayer	
  for	
  a	
  successful	
  day	
  in	
  Joburg.	
  The	
  images	
  drive	
  forward	
  that	
  we	
  are	
  all	
  the	
  same	
  at	
  
the	
  end	
  of	
  the	
  day	
  when	
  we	
  retire	
  to	
  bed	
  or	
  under	
  open	
  skies.	
  

The	
  photo	
  series	
  does	
  not	
  “traditional”	
  captions	
  because	
  the	
  viewer	
  is	
  tasked	
  with	
  answering	
  the	
  posed

   talent

   often

misunderstood

   ineffectively	
   utilised.

   project	
   seeks	
   these	
   unique	
   and	
   special	
   individuals	
   and	
  
surrounds	
  them	
  with	
  unlike	
  minded	
  creatives	
  to	
  produce	
  what	
  has	
  never	
  been	
  created	
  before.	
  Authentic	
  
Creatives	
   places	
   one’s	
   level	
   of	
   formal	
   education	
   at	
   the	
   least	
   of	
   its	
   requirements	
   and	
   focuses	
   on	
   raw	
   talent	
  
to	
   reveal	
   potential.	
   Once	
   this	
   potential	
   has	
   been	
   identified	
   it	
   is	
   then	
   easier	
   for	
   a	
   creative	
   to	
   then	
   enter	
  
formal	
  education	
  and	
  excel.	
  

The	
   project	
   provides	
   a	
   platform	
   for	
   talented	
   individuals	
   to	
   collaborate,	
   contributing	
   their	
   expertise	
   to	
  
create	
   a	
   product	
   e.g.	
   Photo	
   Exhibition,	
   online	
   campaign,	
   video,	
   documentary,	
   books	
   ,	
   music	
   videos,	
  
outdoor	
  advertising	
  campaign	
  etc.	
  These	
  activities	
  are	
  credited	
  to	
  their	
  portfolio	
  as	
  sellable	
  proof	
  on	
  one’s	
  
various	
   endeavours.	
   We	
   therefore	
   encourage	
   entrepreneurship	
   and	
   through	
   collaborative	
   efforts	
   to	
  
produce	
  viable

  approach	
  this	
  year	
  will	
  involve	
  a	
  two	
  day	
  
ideas	
  exchange	
  workshop	
  pre	
  and	
  post	
  photoshooting.	
  

We	
  will	
  host	
  40-­‐50	
  creatives	
  who	
  will	
  interact	
  with	
  seasoned	
  guest	
  photographers	
  and	
  
acclaimed	
  creatives	
  from	
  different	
  industries.	
  We	
  recognise	
  that	
  Industries	
  such	
  as	
  
magazine	
  publishing	
  and	
  advertising	
  often	
  lack	
  “authentic”	
  creatives	
  with	
  raw	
  talent.	
  Our	
  
speakers	
  will	
  use	
  this	
  opportunity	
  to	
  address	
  talented	
  individuals	
  on	
  opportunities	
  in	
  
pursuing	
  specific	
  industries	
  for	
  a	
  career.	
  Our	
  acclaimed	
  guests	
  will	
  present	
  their	
  work	
  in	
  
seminar	
  style

  follow

  inspiring

  sesoned	
  guests	
  at	
  
each	
  to	
  talk-­‐through	
  the	
  exhibition

MJBY Series 2013 Speaker Invitation

  • 1.   /May  Johannesburg  Bless  You/  Photo  and  Video  Series/                             Every  year  in  May  young  creatives  take  the  streets  of  Johannesburg  in  a  way  that  has  never  been  done  before  yet   familiar  to  every  one  of  us  Joburgers.  The  team  brings  forward  vivid  images  of  the  lives  of  Joburgers.  The  photo   series  unashamedly  idolizes  the  city  and  elevates  it  to  deity  status  by  suggesting  that  each  and  every  one  of  us   recites  an  unconscious  prayer  to  this  concrete  God  everyday.     The  everyday  scenes  of  vagabonds  in  South  Africa’s  traffic  intersections  inspired  this  mirroring  photo  shoot.  The  idea   twisted  and  exchanged  roles  removing  the  hobo  and  replacing  it  with  you!  The  “normal”    citizen  who  is  supposedly   contends  with  “less”  problems  because  you  have  a  home  to  sleep  in  every  night,  probably  a  car  and  three  meals  a   day.  The  series  then  asked  is  it  really  the  case?  Are  “normal”  or  “comfortable”  citizenz  living  without  problems,  and  if   they  do  are  they  less  “tragic”  or  worthy  of  donations  monetary  or  otherwise  from  strangers?  Within  the  20  seconds   you  spend  at  a  traffic  light,  a  homeless  person  wielding  a  piece  of  cardboard  laden  with  carefully  planned  writing   regardless  of  the  shattered  grammar  can  tell  you  his  whole  life  story  and  have  you  retched  with  guilt  for  driving  that   car  or  even  having  clothes  with  no  holes  in  them.  The  stories  they  write  always  have  a  secret  weapon  or  a  trump   card.  The  words  “May  God  Bless  You”  are  as  good  to  a  homeless  person  as  a  bank  guaranteed  check.  Is  there  a   better  guarantee/tool  than  an  all-­‐powerful  entity  responsible  for  your  existence?     But  who  is  there  to  help  you  with  your  supposedly  “easy”  problems?  Who  is  there  to  help  an  accountant  who  is   ravaged  by  debt  yet  lives  in  a  mansion  and  drives  a  posh  car?  Who  is  there  to  help  him  with  change?  Is  there  help  for   a  self-­‐confessed  gluttonous  and  greedy  B.E.E.  struggle  hero  who  religiously  prays  for  another  tender  after  several   already  won  and  squandered?  How  about  a  white  male  UCT  grad  that  cannot  start  a  business  because  he  has  a  low   B.E.E  rating  in  a  land  of  native  Africans?  The  series  supposes  that  in  all  our  differences  each  and  every  one  of  us  has  a   prayer  to  be  fulfilled.  A  prayer  for  a  successful  day  in  Joburg.  The  images  drive  forward  that  we  are  all  the  same  at   the  end  of  the  day  when  we  retire  to  bed  or  under  open  skies.   The  photo  series  does  not  “traditional”  captions  because  the  viewer  is  tasked  with  answering  the  posed  question

  • 3.     /About/I  Create  We  Create   Authentic   Creatives   is   collaborative   project   that   harnesses   individual   talent   and   augments   that   talent   through   group   exertion.   The   aim   of   the   project   is   to   collate   creative   talent   that   is   often   ignored,   misunderstood   or   ineffectively   utilised.   The   project   seeks   these   unique   and   special   individuals   and   surrounds  them  with  unlike  minded  creatives  to  produce  what  has  never  been  created  before.  Authentic   Creatives   places   one’s   level   of   formal   education   at   the   least   of   its   requirements   and   focuses   on   raw   talent   to   reveal   potential.   Once   this   potential   has   been   identified   it   is   then   easier   for   a   creative   to   then   enter   formal  education  and  excel.   The   project   provides   a   platform   for   talented   individuals   to   collaborate,   contributing   their   expertise   to   create   a   product   e.g.   Photo   Exhibition,   online   campaign,   video,   documentary,   books   ,   music   videos,   outdoor  advertising  campaign  etc.  These  activities  are  credited  to  their  portfolio  as  sellable  proof  on  one’s   various   endeavours.   We   therefore   encourage   entrepreneurship   and   through   collaborative   efforts   to   produce  viable  businesses.   www.icreatewecreate.com icreatewecreate Icreatewecreate Website & Content Short Film Video Exhibition & Miller   Authentic  people  find  creative  ways  of  transporting  information  before  they  hit  the  print  button.          
  • 4. Workshops   I  Create  We  Create  prides  itself  on  it’s  ability  to  attract  talented,  young    and  aspiring   creatives  from  a  variety  of  backgrounds.  Our  approach  this  year  will  involve  a  two  day   ideas  exchange  workshop  pre  and  post  photoshooting.   We  will  host  40-­‐50  creatives  who  will  interact  with  seasoned  guest  photographers  and   acclaimed  creatives  from  different  industries.  We  recognise  that  Industries  such  as   magazine  publishing  and  advertising  often  lack  “authentic”  creatives  with  raw  talent.  Our   speakers  will  use  this  opportunity  to  address  talented  individuals  on  opportunities  in   pursuing  specific  industries  for  a  career.  Our  acclaimed  guests  will  present  their  work  in   seminar  style  and  follow  up  with  inspiring  the  young  creatives  in  a  relaxed  idea  exchange   session.     After  the  launch  event  the  resulting  photo  material  will  be  exhibited  over  a  period  of  two   weeks.  During  this  period  we  will  host  two  short  seminars  with  three  sesoned  guests  at   each  to  talk-­‐through  the  exhibition  for  a  period  no  longer  than  4  hours.     ITINERARY  1ST  WORKSHOP 4  acclaimed  guest  speakers  (45  minutes  presentation)  and  1  hour  open  floor  Idea  exchange 1  Speaker  from  Adobe ITINERARY  2ND  WORKSHOP 3  Photographers  from  the  May  Johannesburg  Bless  You  Campaign  2013-­‐02-­‐26 Creative  Director  of  I  Create  We  Create ITINERARY  IN-­‐EXHIBITION  1ST  WORKSHOP 3  acclaimed  speakers  delivering  opinion  on  series ITINERARY  IN-­‐EXHIBITION  2ND  WORKSHOP 3  acclaimed  speakers  delivering  opinion  on  series
