     AND THEIR DIFFERENCES

What is a
SOFTWARE????
SOFTWARE
• Collection of programs & related data that
instructs computer what to do and how to do
  it
• A set of programs, procedures, algorithms and
  its documentation concerned with the
operation of a data processing system
• Programs - an ordered sequence of
instructions for changing the state of the
  computer in a particular sequence
• Usually written in high-level programming
languages that are easier and more efficient
  for humans to use.
• Then compiled or interpreted to machine code
• At the lowest level, executable code consists
of machine language instructions specific to
  an individual processor
SYSTEM SOFTWARE
• A computer s/w or an OS designed to operate
and control the computer h/w and to provide a
  platform for running application software.
• Device drivers such as computer BIOS and device
firmware provide basic functionality to operate
and control the hardware connected to or built
  into the computer
• The OS allows the parts of a computer to work
together by performing tasks like transferring
data between memory and disks or rendering
  output onto a display device
APPLICATION S/W
• Application software is computer software
designed to help the user to perform specific
  task
• Also known as an application or an app’s
• Eg - enterprise s/w, accounting s/w, office
suites, graphics s/w, media players etc
SYSTEM & APPLICATION S/W -
              DIFFERENCE
SYSTEM S/W APPLICATION S/W
1. Computer s/w which 1. Programs that enable the
manages and controls end-user to perform
computer h/w so that specific, productive tasks,
application software can like word processing,
                                 image manipulation etc
   perform a task.
                              2. MS Office 2003 and 2007
2. OS’s, such as Microsoft mozilla firefox,Encarta,
Windows, Mac OS X or adobe acrobat ,notepad ,
Linux, are prominent wordpad etc are typical
   examples. examples
3. System software gets 3. application software is
installed when the installed according to the
operating system is requirements of the user
   installed on the computer
4. Involved in integrating a 4. a subclass of computer
computer's various s/w that employs the
capabilities, but typically capabilities of a computer
does not directly apply directly and thoroughly to
them in the performance a task that the user wishes
of tasks that benefit the to perform
   user
5. Generally, users do not 5. Users interact with
interact with system application software while
software as it works in the doing different activities
   background
6. System software can 6. Application software
run independent of cannot run without
the application the presence of the
   software system software
7. A computer may not 7. There may be a
require more than one number of application
   type of system software programs
   software installed on the
                              computer at the same
                              time.
