Baptized January 1580 – June 21, 1631 Admiral of New England English soldier, explorer, and author. 1606 became involved with plans to colonize Virginia for profit by the Virginia Co. of London, which was granted a charter by King James I of England. Expedition set sail with 3 small ships: The Discovery, Susan Constant, and the Godspeed. 3. Location was selected May 14, 1607 by Cpt. Edward Maria Wingfield, president of the council. Harsh weather, lack of water and attacks by the Powhatan nation almost destroyed the colony. John Smith was capture in Dec, of 1607 while seeking food, and was taken to meet the chief of the Powhatan Confederacy.
