SUBJECT: NURSING MANAGEMENT.
PRESENTED BY: HARMEET KAUR
M.SC (N) IIND YEAR
COLLEGE OF NURSING,
AIMS,
SRI MUKTSAR SAHIB.
The word “administer” is derived from
Latin word “ad+ministraire”, means to care for
or to look after people to manage affairs.
Administraire means “Serve”.
The meaning itself reflect that the
administrator regards himself as servant, not
that the master to look after, perform all the
functions It is a cooperative effort, directed
towards the realization of a consciously laid
down objectives.
INTRODUCTION
“Administration is the organization and
direction of human and material resources to
achieve desired ends.”
- Pfiffner and Presthus
“Administration has to do with getting things
done; with the accomplishment of defined
objectives.”
- Luther Gullick
DEFINITION OF
ADMINISTRATION
“Administration is the direction,
coordination and control of many persons
to achieve some purposes or objectives.”
- LD White
“Administration is the activities of groups
cooperating to accomplish common goals.”
- Herbert A Simon
“Management may be defined as the
art of securing maximum results with the
minimum of effort so as to secure maximum
prosperity and happiness for both employer
and employee and give the public the best
possible service.”
- John Mee
DEFINITION OF
MANAGEMENT
“Management is simply the process of
decision making and control over the action
of human being for the express purpose of
attaining predetermined goal.”
- Stanely Vance
“Nursing Administration is primarily the
process and agency used to establish the
nursing objectives or purposes, which an
undertaking or staffs are to achieve. It also has
to plan and to stabilize, the broad lines or
principles that will govern nursing action. These
broad lines are usually called policies. Whereas
the nursing management is the process and
agency through which execution of nursing
policy is planned and supervised.”
- Milward GE

The scope of administration is very wide.
It is not only restricted to public administration
that deals with three functionaries, i.e.
legislative, executive and judiciary.
As administration is universal in nature,
its scope is wide. It covers all the areas like
school, hospital, business etc., all the
managerial activities and functional areas of
management and administration like personnel,
financial, material and production are covered.
 Political function
 Legislative function
 Financial function
 Defensive function

 Foreign administration

Since, administration permeates all
planned human activities; hence it is a

implementation for the attainment in an
optimum manner of stated ends in the
shape of service or products.
Administration is an activity which
demands correct analysis and accurate
orientation.
