28. 28 06 BIM project
“BIM Components Strategic Recommendations” conference held in Roca Barcelona Gallery in
February 2.013 strongly introduces the BIM concept and triggers the need to be present as BIM
manufacturers.
BIM is coming…
• United Kingdom
In June 2011, the UK government published "Building Information Modeling (BIM) Working Party
Strategy", where the government announced its intention to require all 3D BIM in construction projects
from 2016.
• Norway
BIM is essential for major infrastructure and all government buildings. From 2014 all newly built
hospitals should be carried out using the latest version of openBIM (IFC).
• United States
Since 2007, the General Services Administration requires that the geometric definition and spatial
construction projects are managed by BIM format. The Corps of the Navy (USACE) demands the same
from 2008.
• Singapore
The Building and Construction Authority has a roadmap for BIM that pushes its construction industry to
be using BIM widely by 2015.
BIM?
29. 29 06 BIM project
Pilot – 2.013
Main objectives
Select a representative short list of 50 products to be used in the pilot project.
Create BIM objects of these products using both Revit and ArchiCAD formats.
Evaluate the quality of the BIM objects produced and ensure they are built in a professional
format that can be used by all users.
Acquire the knowledge to produce the objects in-house with the optimum quality standards.
Control the ownership of our products’ objects and distribute channels to the users.
Make the most from the experience to decide on how to face the massive production of BIM
objects in terms of internal specifications and meta-data automated population from ECM
database
Define the strategy for the mid and long term production of objects: internal vs. external and
the partners to choose.

Pilot – 2.013
Lessons learnt
• Define the BIM components specification needs (“Roca Group BIM”)
• Define the strategy to create, maintain, distribute and control the ownership of the components
• Acquire the know-how to produce the components in-house
• Obtain an estimation of costs and time to produce large number of BIM components
Key strategic decisions
• Identify metadata source and build the procedures to populate objects.
• Identify 3D files resources and adapt them for proper geometry compatibility.
• Validate the quality of the components in a professional environment
• Define object distribution methodology or use publishing platforms.
• Use metrics to analyze downloads and ROI.
33. 33 06 BIM project

Main objectives
Select a large number of products (400 from Roca + 400 from Laufen).
Create BIM objects of these products using both Revit and ArchiCAD formats.
Evaluate the quality of the BIM objects produced and ensure they are built in a professional
format that can be used by all users.
Publish BIM objects in our websites and/or in external distribution platforms.
Obtain analytics from downloads for market discovery and users feedback.

Recommendations
Ask yourself
Why
Identify if you need to offer BIM contents. (Answer = yes).
When
Plan your target date for offering BIM objects, but also to accept requests from users.
What
Define the portfolio of products you want to offer.
Who
Choose a supplier to generate BIM objects or do it by your means.
How
Adapt your organization and processes to be capable to generate the information.
