Africa: On and Off the Data Highway
Behaviors and Opinions of Internet Users and Non-Users
On Oct 7, 2015 the Broadcasting Board of Governors and Gallup examined the latest research data on the attitudes, activities and behaviors of Internet users and non-users in Cote d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe.
Looking at five illustrative countries from all corners of Africa, one cannot fail to notice a great information divide: Less than 10% of adults in Ethiopia and Cote d’Ivoire use the Internet at least once a week to access news and information, compared to over a quarter in Kenya and Nigeria. What demographic traits distinguish Internet users and those who are left offline? And more importantly, how do internet users feel differently about issues than their offline brethren?
The speakers drew on recent BBG data and the Gallup World Poll to assess the role of the Internet in news gathering, youth development and community engagement.
Speakers included:
Chris Stewart, Partner, Gallup
Sonja Gloeckle, Director of Research, BBG
Magali Rheault, Regional Research Director- Francophone Africa, Gallup
Ellington Kamba, Research Analyst, Office of Research and Assessment, BBG
