 1. Affirmative form

          S(subject)……(adv)……shì……O(object)

              Tā                shì         lǎoshī

              Wǒmen         dōu       shì      xuésheng

              Nǐmen         dōu       shì    lǎoshī

  Note: Chinese verb “shì” is not like the English verb “to be”. It


  remains unchanged in form under any circumstances and


  undergoes no morphological changes of time, aspect, person,


  gender or number.

  1.         Negative form:

         S……(adv)…… bú shì… …O

Note: The negative form of the verb “shì” must be “bú shì” with the


negative adverb “bù” placed before “shì”. The form “shì bù” does


not exist in Chinese.

                           Grammar and Notes

1. Personal pronouns used as attributive modifiers and the


     structural particle “de”.

      “De” should be used after a personal pronoun when the structure


expresses possession. For example:

     Tā de Zhōngwén míngzi

      If the noun attributively modified expresses kinship, “de” can be


 omitted after the personal pronoun. For example:

                  It is used at the end of the interrogative sentences to indicate

           that the speaker has an estimate of something but is not very


           certain. The tone is mild.
