FROM THE EDITOR
I’ve been shocked at the contagion of the developing Downtown attitude. Almost every day, someone pitches me a new idea — a
restaurant they’d like to open, the boutique they think would be perfect in that building right over there, a fresh app for small business.
(I’ll admit: most people who talk to me are jacked up on caffeine.) Not so long ago, these dreamers would’ve been met with cynicism and
negativity. They would’ve packed up their dream and taken the next opportunity to move North.
But now?
Now it all seems possible. And not only possible but impending. There’s a culture Downtown — created by most of you reading this —
that sees each day as a chance to do more. Once, we did what we could to get by. Now we do what we see others doing. Cool neighbors
have cool magazines? Yeah, we can do that. Next, we’ll do what no one has done. Things will come out of our Downtown in the next few
years that others will try to imitate.
We highlight some dreamers in this issue. Some see an empty second floor and create a new home (p. 28). Some turn a back porch hobby
into a crowd pleaser (p. 36). Others think 2015 is the year the Downtown music scene explodes (p. 17).
There will always be those who laugh at development and say “can’t” to Downtown, but there are plenty who want progress bad enough to
try. And more are added to our number everyday. It’s catching on.

HEART AND SOULby Lynn Lancaster
Director, Historic Downtown Sikeston
The new year is upon us and the merchants and members
of Downtown Sikeston are ready to greet 2015. Many cities
have businesses scattered in every direction of the map, with
shopping centers and strip malls popping up everywhere, but
downtowns are special. Downtown is usually the seat of
government and the location of much nostalgia. Downtowns
are filled with historic structures with architectural design,
not the plain brown buildings wrapped in vinyl siding we see
today. And Historic Downtown Sikeston is no different. We
have buildings over 100 years old with all kinds of design
features that give Downtown a special personality. And
Downtowns usually filled with parks, fountains, bandstands,
and places of relaxation. The addition of the new Board of
Municipal Utilities’ building and the Public Safety building
have added to the appeal of Downtown. We have lost
several buildings in the past to fire and decay, but there is
a resurgence to improve and restore the buildings that are
in need of help. We applaud the efforts of the Crader Law
Firm to restore and remodel their building. Also the old
Ford Motor Co. building is being remodeled by Ted Elliott.
Historic Downtown Sikeston is the “Heart and Soul” of
Sikeston. Downtown is the place where our festivals are
held and the place where people can gather and enjoy good
friendships.
March will bring the St. Patrick’s Day Celebration to begin
our festival season. This event is a craft beer competition,
craft vendors, good food, and music by “Common Thread”.
Last year’s event brought several hundred patrons to Malone
Park for the festivities. We have craft beer contestants from
a multistate region and craft beer vendors Kohlfeld, Bob
Ralph Distributing, Bluff City Beer, Schafly, Charleville, and
Minglewood.
Following the St. Patrick’s Day Celebration will be a new
event for Downtown Sikeston our first annual style show.
It is our intent to have a cutting edge catwalk featuring
clothes, accessories, and props from Downtown merchants.
It is tentatively set for March 28. The contact person for this
event is Megan Parker at Men of Falkoff’s and Ladies.
Also new this spring, we will combine Sikeston in Bloom,
our annual spring festival, with our Car Show and Ice Cream
social. Sikeston in Bloom will be in its traditional spot in
Legion Park, and the Car Show will be in the parking lot
behind the Depot Museum.
Music in Malone Park will begin on May 29 and continue
every Friday evening through the month of June. Local
bands will provide an evening of entertainment under the
big oak trees. Bring a chair or a blanket and enjoy the
music. In addition, free popcorn and water and other
foods vendors will be available. Watch for our list of
bands coming soon.
New also this year will be our first annual Tributary Film
Festival. This will be our maiden voyage into the world
of small films. The event is headed by Colby Williams
at Parengo Coffee. The film festival will be July 10 and
11 and will feature Q & A sessions headed by some of
the region’s professors, after parties, and filming of short
films in Downtown Sikeston.

wine festival on Center Street, the Cotton Festival of the
Arts/Cotton Ramble Bike Ride, and our Holiday Open
House with carriage rides and Santa. Over 800 patrons
attended last year’s wine festival, and the Holiday Open
House was a great success. Weather permitting, this will
be a banner year for Historic Downtown Sikeston.
Historic Downtown Sikeston is alive and well. Just come
down any morning and look at the businesses. We have
just about anything you want, with a big dose of Service
added in. Our Downtown merchants provide a quality
product with friendly service. In Downtown Sikeston you
can get fitted, altered, repaired, fed, framed, loaned,
clothed, surveyed, and beautified, and go to church when
you’re done. Come shop Historic Downtown Sikeston!

God and want others to experience that same change so that ultimately God is glorified.

Bling Spring!
You’ve heard the saying, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend,” and I
believe this to be true. The symbolism of a diamond is powerful.
Within that clear stone mirrors a reflection of true love and fidelity…
and what gal wouldn’t want that?! This precious gem goes back to
the fourth century BC worn by the higher wealth of India before
reaching the elite in the West. So now that you know a little more
about these deep dug rocks of love, go bling those digits! Terri is a
“bling your digits” master…just ask her!

This is not the kind of party where you invite your friends over to
help paint your drabs to fabs, but one to color up your 2015! Grab
your friends, paint brushes and a drink or two and create your very
own artwork. You may think drinking and painting is dangerous but
it’s never been more fun! Do something different with your friends,
coworkers or family. And don’t worry, a trained artist will be there
to assist so you’ll be proud to sport it on your wall. See! You can
still have your cake and eat it too but you might want to save it for
later. $35 per person.

Today we are spoiled when it comes to technology, but let’s
not forget about those good ol’ days. The 1800s brought
us the first partially successful photograph and WOW! how
we’ve evolved. Today, these old cameras are sought after by
top collectors and put on exhibit. Just think of the engraved
images shot on these over the many years past. What a great

Hair I Dos!
From the nappiest of naps to the super limp, hair has a mind of its own
sometimes. We spend a fortune on our hair and guess what? It’s worth it!
Here are a couple products you will definitely want to add to your collection.
For crazy curls like mine, give the “Redken Guts10 Volume Spray Foam”
a try. This offers frizz-free curls and is a non-sticky alternative to a gel.
For those with straight hair, check out this backcombing finishing spray,
“Redken Quick Tease15”. My niece said she’s in love. This gave her limp
hair significant volume without falling at the end of the day.

CHAMBER THOUGHTSby Morgan Hough
Assistant Director, Sikeston Regional Chamber
15
The Sikeston Regional Chamber Board of Directors has worked
tirelessly over the past few months to develop a new strategic plan.
Working with SEMO University’s Jim Caldwell, the board of directors,
and the members of the strategic planning committee outlined a
new direction for the Sikeston Regional Chamber. After considering
the opportunities and challenges presented to the SRC by internal
and external analysis, the board members, staff and the consultant
implemented a new mission statement: The Sikeston Regional
Chamber provides business growth and professional development for
its members and is the place to go for community information.
While the board members and planning committee recognize the
hard work and efforts put forth by board members and chamber staff,
everyone agreed there is room for improvement. After evaluating
existing and potential resources, the chamber has reconstructed
some of the systems and procedures in place and has reprioritized
its direction for future development. The vision is to provide
accurate, focused, and accessible information to members and the
public. Providing business growth and professional development
opportunities that cover current business topics, soft and hard skill
training, cutting edge business practices, and technologies from local
experts are our goals in the coming years. Revising the old mission
and vision statements to better reflect the chamber member’s needs,
industry trends, and overall purpose for the Sikeston-Miner business
community will give stakeholders better assurance that the chamber
is here to serve the businesses in this community.
The chamber seeks keeping up with technologies and the changing
trends of business, and we are open to unconventional ways of
promoting businesses in our community. The improvement in Historic
Downtown Sikeston is a perfect example of a strategic plan in action,
identifying a need and working toward a goal can be seen downtown
and throughout the community. We know how hard our business
owners work; that is where the SRC can be helpful. For our chamber
members, we can provide business educational tools, opportunities
for relationship building, and enhancement for young professionals
that businesses in the community might not be able to get otherwise.
It is our goal to provide our members with the tools and skills they will
need. Whether it is a workshop on how to increase the bottom line or
a seminar on proper customer service techniques, we can provide the
best possible growth opportunities for our members. As always, the
Sikeston Regional Chamber is here for the Sikeston area’s businesses,
and we welcome your suggestions and comments.

DOWNTOWN MUSIC
Growing up a musician in Sikeston hasn’t always been the easiest thing
to do. Basement shows never really caught on around here, unless you
count the Manhattan Room, but around 2007, those stopped too. Sikeston
is filled with talented musicians who have been looking for a place to play
in their hometown for years, and when Parengo Coffee opened downtown,
it gave these musicians a place to express themselves in their art form,
thanks to a monthly open mic night.
Live music on the patio at Jeremiah’s after the wine festival.
DOWNTOWNMUSIC
The first Open Mic Night was hosted on April
4, 2014. It not only drew a large crowd to
watch, but pulled in some of the best talent
that Sikeston has to offer. Among these
musicians were Jay Leible, Devin Scott,
and myself, three people who have been to
and performed at every open mic since our
very first one. Open mic has gone “head-to-
head” with many events in town, such has
the rodeo and fall homecoming, and has
pulled in a large crowd at each event, giving
all of us involved a growing confidence in
our decision to keep the downtown music
scene going.
Each open mic night draws in a regular
group of performers as well as a rotating
cast of talented musicians such as Kennedy
Frohawk & The Fault-line, The Degenerates,
Jacob Bond, Tray Phelps, and Jordan Powell.
With this mix, every style of music is well
represented. Not only do these musicians
playtheirownarrangementsofpopularsongs,
they also perform original compositions in a
very intimate setting, allowing for them to
gauge the reaction to the song with each
individual person in the audience.
Personally, open mic night has been a great
event for me. Not only am I the host of the
event, I play at them as well, and that allows
me to get back into the live performing
game that I haven’t been involved with since
2009. When I was approached to host the first
open mic night, I jumped at the opportunity to
get back into the Sikeston music scene. I talked
with Devin Scott and Jordan Powell about what
made them both want to participate in open mic
and here’s what they had to say:
“I really enjoy playing music, and I love
the community it creates,” said Scott.
“The great thing about open mic is that
it incorporates both. It’s an everyone is
welcome atmosphere that is laid back
so you get to meet and chat with other
musicians and artists in the area. It’s
great.”
“Sikeston needs more of the arts,” said
Powell, who also plays solo shows at
Parengo Coffee aside from open mic. “I’m
passionate about the movement and I want
to help it in anyway that I can!”
If you’re interested in coming to open mic night to
either participate or watch, we meet at Parengo Coffee
on the second Friday of every month at 6 o’clock.

Not only does Parengo play host to a
monthly open mic night, it also hosts a
monthly ukulele club. The Last Tuesday
Ukulele Club is hosted by Devin Scott
and myself. The club is still slightly
in its infant stages, but is growing in
membership with every meeting. The
ukulele has grown in popularity in the
recent years thanks, in part, to actress/
singer Zooey Deschanel using it on
her show New Girl and in her band
She&Him. We’ve grown the ukulele club
through very organic means, mostly by
word of mouth. The first meeting of
the club took place on July 26, 2014,
with eight people attending. By the
time our next meeting happened, we
had doubled that number to sixteen,
and we currently sit between seventeen
and twenty two members on a monthly
basis. The members of the club vary by
age and occupation, from 15 year old
high school freshmen to retired teachers
in their mid 70s and everything in
between. The members of the club also
vary in skill level. Most people in the
club hadn’t ever touched a ukulele until
the first time they attended a meeting,
while a few members have been playing
for years. The combination of skill level
means that if the instructors are both
helping someone, there is another
advanced player that can answer any
questions and offer advice to anyone
who needs it.
If you’re interested in attending a Last Tuesday Ukulele club meeting, we meet on the last Tuesday of every month at
Parengo Coffee in downtown Sikeston at six o’clock. You can find us on Facebook at Last Tuesday Ukulele, on Twitter @
lasttuesdayukulele, and email us at lasttuesdayukulele@gmail.com.
As you can see, the music scene in Downtown Sikeston is alive and well thanks to Parengo
Coffee and some dedicated musicians that work tirelessly to make sure the scene continues to
thrive. We invite you to become part of the downtown music scene by attending any music event
that you can attend. Keep an eye on what’s going on downtown, big things are happening. -AM

When I needed my first suit - seventeen years old, my fashion sense more sweatpant than chic - my parents made me take a four hour
trip to get custom tailored at Falkoff’s. I couldn’t have told you the difference between pinstripe and windowpane, but they insisted
no other place would do. All these years later, that jacket still hangs in my closet. The store has changed some, and its off-the-wrack
styles are great for men and women, but there’s something about getting fitted just right that keeps us coming back for years.- CW

Q&Awith downtown server,
Alyssa Quinonez,
interviewed at Susie’s
How long have you been a server?
I’m actually pretty new at serving. I’ve only been at Susie’s for a
couple of months, even though it feels longer!
Describe the atmosphere at Susie’s.
Delicious with a hint of chaotic
What’s your favorite dish there?
I always try to convince our customers to buy our Mississippi Mud
Brownies. I’ll probably start drooling if I describe them.
Does Susie’s have a signature dish?
I like to think that my salads are my trademark as a waitress. I
don’t just throw everything together! I think of every salad as an art
project. The tougher the salads, the craftier I have to be!
What’s the funniest thing that has happened to you as a
server?
One morning I felt parched so I drank a huge bottle of Smart Water.
Whenever I got to work we were swamped with customers! Obviously
I had to hold it till my last breath. As I was waiting on a table
(wishing they would hurry and decide what they wanted) I cut them
off while they were ordering and sprinted to the bathroom! When I
came back I had to explain the whole thing... So embarrassed
Do you have a regular crowd?
Yes, we see familiar faces each and every day! We have customers
that we can just glance at as they walk through the door and know
what they are going to order.
What is the best part of your job?
My favorite part of working here at Susie’s is all of the amazing
people I get to work with every day!

Sam Thomas became a jeweler
seventeen years ago, and he opened
Sam’s Fine Jewelry in Downtown
Sikeston in 2005. Most days his front

telling stories.
“No one else in my family has ever
been interested in the jewelry
industry,” Sam said. “It’s such

Everyone is happy and everyone
feels like family. The best part about
working with my kids running about
is all the people who are around to

community.”
Soon, this space above his store
will be just as alive. Later this year
after months of hard work, Sam and
his children will move into his newly
renovated 2,000 square foot loft.
“Sikeston is very family oriented
and that’s the environment I want

DOWNTOWN
LIVING
The apartment is going to have two seventy foot zip lines that will run through the family room to the kitchen.
“My hard work is really paying off and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.” said Sam. “Words can’t explain how thankful we are to
live here and own our own business. If it wasn’t for the neighborhood, I would have nothing.”
Downtown Sikeston seems to be the place for Sam and his little family. They light sparklers every day along the sidewalks in front of
their future home.
“No one minds. Everyone is so kind. You can have fun as long as you’re not being an idiot.” said Sam. “My kids are my life. We must
laugh every day and treat our elders with respect. I bet two thousand grandmas and grandpas have held my kids here in my store.”

Twenty three year old Skylar Harden resides in
her humble abode right above The Red Carpet in
Downtown Sikeston. Skylar grew up in Sikeston,
but lived in East Prairie for two years. She needed
a change, so she chose Downtown Sikeston as a
place to start over.
“My life wasn’t where I wanted it to be before I
moved to Sikeston.” said Skylar “I got married
at an early age, and that didn’t work out well. My
mistakes have definitely shaped me into a better
person and I wouldn’t change a thing.”
Moving Downtown helped shape her hopeful
future.
“I wanted to have my own place and all my
friends lived in Sikeston.” said Skylar. “I really
liked the location. The most important thing
that’s happened since I’ve been here is: I got the
opportunity to reconnect with my dad. I also met
my boyfriend, Cullen. We met at Jeremiah’s, which
is the best place to get a drink in Sikeston.”
She and Cullen go to Jeremiah’s almost every
weekend to let loose and eat good food. “And I
need my coffee, so Parengo is where you’ll find me
most of the time.” Skylar said.
Skylar really enjoys the environment in Downtown
Sikeston. She lives close to the police station,
which makes her feel safe. “The neighborhood
is very active and friendly. My apartment is small
and cozy, and the view is great. There is a farmers
market basically in my front yard, which is
something I can definitely live with.” said Skylar.
She has been living in Sikeston since May of this
year and is happy to have met plenty of genuine
people.
“I am happy here and very thankful to live in such
an energetic atmosphere.” said Skylar
While the demand for loft apartments is growing
in Sikeston, the supply remains limited. How
property owners develop their spaces in the next
few years will effect the entire Downtown business
community, as the desire to eat, live, and play in
the same neighborhood has finally reached our
doors.
Come meet the new owners, Carter
and Lori Adams! We have a large
selection of mat and frame samples
to choose from and use acid free and
conservation materials upon request.
We frame portraits, certificates, sports
jerseys, guns, coins, flags, needlework,
prints, and original art. You bring it,
we will frame it!
We sell limited edition prints and
ready made frames.
We exhibit and offer for sale original
art masterpieces by local artists Lynn
Lancaster and Marilyn Schwaninger.

ANSWERS ONLYReade Ferguson - Paul’s Pawn and Red Architect, LLC
Interviewed by Cameron Godwin
By trade, I am an architect; by
profession, I’m now a pawnbroker.
Without understanding the
rest of the world, it’s hard to
understand other people.
You can’t judge people. That will
backfire real quick.
Let the customer tell you what
they want. Don’t jump on them
first.
I can deal in anything and
everything. If there us interest
or value, let’s look at it.
Even though we’re local, we
have national people watching
is all the time.
I really enjoy woodworking.
I think it is just . . . creating.
It allows you to express any
feelings you have. It may reflect
what you feel, or it may reflect
what you want people to feel.
Food is a big passion of mine. I spent
a year in Sweden studying Culinary
Arts, so I’d love to see more cuisine
Downtown.
It is kind of nice to see and
deal with something different
every single day.
I once pawned a horseshoer’s entire
business. His livelihood was in a
trailer, and I pawned it.
I haven’t seen that amazing
antique piece. It’s not Pawn Stars
all the time.
I could probably almost have built a house
with all I’ve pawned.
You see the good, the bad, the
ugly, and things you ought not to
see. Or smell.
I’ve had guys come in with bleeding
wounds trying to sell stuff to go to the
hospital.
I want to change the way people
view pawn shops.
People can come get a loan easier than
opening a credit card if they have goods.
And if they can’t pay, it doesn’t hurt them
the same way.
I keep a lot of people’s electricity
on.
That item acts as a credit card. It’s a
line of credit.
I hope to see my store as a bigger
overall destination for Downtown.
If people are looking for something, I hope they
come Downtown. I can help with that. And not
just myself, but Downtown as a whole.
Any time there is an event
Downtown, or just in Sikeston,
there is an increase in foot traffic.
You have to have open eyes. Look
for talent everywhere.
I never expected to end up here,
but I love it.
Dickering around is addictive.
You just want to ask if they’ll
take less. Even at grocery stores.
For the most part, if you’re friendly
to people, they are friendly back. I
experience that every day.
I think Downtown is going in the
right direction.
I hate to see old buildings unused. They
have so much more character than we
can produce now. The new ones are fake.
The old ones portray a huge story.
There should be a contrast. New
should look new.
I wish I could live in Downtown and
not have to leave - live upstairs
and shop downstairs

ST. PATRICK’S DAY FESTIVAL
& HOMEBREW COMPETITION36
Last year’s smash hit is back - the St.
Patrick’s day Festival and Homebrew
Competition. On March 14 in Malone
Park, come enjoy tastings from
Minglewood Brewery, Charleville
Brewing Co., Urban Chestnut Brewing
Company, Schlafly Brewing, Bluff City
Beer Co., Bob Ralph Distributing Co.,
Public House Brewing Company, and
Kohlfeld Distributing. There will be
live music, food, games, and a St. Pat’s
costume contest. Homebrewers will
compete in five categories with awards
and prizes provided by this year’s
sponsors:Sam’sFineJewelry,Homebrew
Supply of Southeast Missouri, Sikeston
Jaycees, Grant Financial Management,
and participating beer vendors
ST. PATTY’S CELEBRATION
HOMEBREWSNEAKPEAK
Last year’s crowd favorite was brewed by Justin Wibbenmeyer and Bart
Ziegenhorn. BRINK has your exclusive sneak peek into their process, as
well as words from Ziegenhorn, the local champ,
and brewmaster and judge Michael Mills. Check it out.
Wegotintobrewingin2010.Ihad
been bartending in Mississippi
on the square at Ole Miss for
about 6 years and had gotten
into learning about beer. Justin
Wibbenmeyer has been a sales
rep for Ralph for years. I guess
you could say we’ve both been
in the beer business and always
talked about starting our own.
Randomly one day we took off to
Fruitland to Homebrew Supply
to check out some ingredients.
Next thing we know, the truck is
loaded up with much more than
just ingredients. That was the
start. We went straight back to
Sikeston to brew a batch under
the name “Nevertheless”.
38
39
Since then, we’ve been knee deep in reading, learning, buying
random pieces of equipment, and working on that perfect
recipe. We both have different styles that are our favorite,
but one thing we both enjoy is a honey wheat. So since
the beginning we’ve been changing our recipe, searching for
that perfect honey wheat. It’s something we want to get just
right before moving on to the next perfect beer.
The Downtown St. Patrick’s celebration is an incredible
event for Sikeston. Homebrew and microbrews are popping
up all over the country. It’s awesome to see the passion and
time these guys take to perfect their craft.
The former owner
of Anchor Beer,
Fritz Maytag, once
said, “Beer does
not make itself
properly by itself.
It takes an element
of mystery and of
things that no one
can understand.”
ST. PATTY’S CELEBRATION
Hosting this event in Malone Park is a huge part of bringing back Downtown. Having groups travel to our
town, having the locals come out and enjoy the day, making friends, learning about the art of brewing,
and forgetting about the stresses of life for a day is what it’s all about. It’s a celebration of St. Patrick’s
Day, but to us it is a celebration of just plain ole fun in the town we love.
Last year we brought our honey wheat,
which has been tweaked yet again, a
strawberry wheat to bring in the spring
season, and a new improved coffee stout
compliments of our very own Parengo
Coffee. We will be bringing the same
ideas again this year. We have a title to
defend. And this year each recipe has
been upgraded. Plus our tent area will
be upgraded - presentation is important.
Our motto is
		today was a good
		brew day.
-Bart Ziegenhorn

It’s fantastic to see beer culture move past the
character-lacking beers that previous generations
have settled for. Now we are embracing local
breweries that hand-craft beers and showcase
regional character and creativity. What is perhaps
even more exciting is to see that beer culture is
bringing that creative endeavor back home into
our own kitchens. People have a new respect and
appreciation for beer. The creative boundaries have
been dropped as a result of the craft beer movement.
Homebrewers are perhaps the greatest motivators
because of their enthusiasm and willingness to
take risks. They inspire professionals, and the circle
of creativity keeps rolling as the evolution of beer
thrives. It’s an awesome time in history to be a beer
drinker! Homebrewing has been probably the single
greatest catalyst in the craft beer movement. We
all started out as homebrewers, joining clubs like
the Hop Heads. Beer Has always given people an
excuse to come together. Homebrewing gives beer
drinkers something creative and fulfilling to do. It
has also brought more attention to the possibilities
of beer. Homebrewing is without question the chief
motivator in the craft beer movement and the
evolution of beer. - Mike Mills

One of a kind, affordable Art
HERE’S A POEM WRITTEN ABOUT A PIECE OF ART DOWNTOWN:
A glass bull is gazing at me
with a level of determination
that I can only ever dream of having.
I’ve lived too much life with
a careless attitude.
I care now. I truly do.
I feel like the sharpie man.
My world once upside down;
I was flipped in a way that
People really had to look
in order to see me.
Now, right side up,
I’m still shooting nonsense
out of my mouth.
If only I had the determination of the
glass bull with the golden horns.
Maybe then I could turn my nonsense
into words like lightning bolt arrows.

  • 4. FROM THE EDITOR I’ve been shocked at the contagion of the developing Downtown attitude. Almost every day, someone pitches me a new idea — a restaurant they’d like to open, the boutique they think would be perfect in that building right over there, a fresh app for small business. (I’ll admit: most people who talk to me are jacked up on caffeine.) Not so long ago, these dreamers would’ve been met with cynicism and negativity. They would’ve packed up their dream and taken the next opportunity to move North. But now? Now it all seems possible. And not only possible but impending. There’s a culture Downtown — created by most of you reading this — that sees each day as a chance to do more. Once, we did what we could to get by. Now we do what we see others doing. Cool neighbors have cool magazines? Yeah, we can do that. Next, we’ll do what no one has done. Things will come out of our Downtown in the next few years that others will try to imitate. We highlight some dreamers in this issue. Some see an empty second floor and create a new home (p. 28). Some turn a back porch hobby into a crowd pleaser (p. 36). Others think 2015 is the year the Downtown music scene explodes (p. 17). There will always be those who laugh at development and say “can’t” to Downtown, but there are plenty who want progress bad enough to try. And more are added to our number everyday. It’s catching on. • 7. HEART AND SOULby Lynn Lancaster Director, Historic Downtown Sikeston The new year is upon us and the merchants and members of Downtown Sikeston are ready to greet 2015. Many cities have businesses scattered in every direction of the map, with shopping centers and strip malls popping up everywhere, but downtowns are special. Downtown is usually the seat of government and the location of much nostalgia. Downtowns are filled with historic structures with architectural design, not the plain brown buildings wrapped in vinyl siding we see today. And Historic Downtown Sikeston is no different. We have buildings over 100 years old with all kinds of design features that give Downtown a special personality. And Downtowns usually filled with parks, fountains, bandstands, and places of relaxation. The addition of the new Board of Municipal Utilities’ building and the Public Safety building have added to the appeal of Downtown. We have lost several buildings in the past to fire and decay, but there is a resurgence to improve and restore the buildings that are in need of help. We applaud the efforts of the Crader Law Firm to restore and remodel their building. Also the old Ford Motor Co. building is being remodeled by Ted Elliott. Historic Downtown Sikeston is the “Heart and Soul” of Sikeston. Downtown is the place where our festivals are held and the place where people can gather and enjoy good friendships. March will bring the St. Patrick’s Day Celebration to begin our festival season. This event is a craft beer competition, craft vendors, good food, and music by “Common Thread”. Last year’s event brought several hundred patrons to Malone Park for the festivities. We have craft beer contestants from a multistate region and craft beer vendors Kohlfeld, Bob Ralph Distributing, Bluff City Beer, Schafly, Charleville, and Minglewood. Following the St. Patrick’s Day Celebration will be a new event for Downtown Sikeston our first annual style show. It is our intent to have a cutting edge catwalk featuring clothes, accessories, and props from Downtown merchants. It is tentatively set for March 28. The contact person for this event is Megan Parker at Men of Falkoff’s and Ladies. Also new this spring, we will combine Sikeston in Bloom, our annual spring festival, with our Car Show and Ice Cream social. Sikeston in Bloom will be in its traditional spot in Legion Park, and the Car Show will be in the parking lot behind the Depot Museum. Music in Malone Park will begin on May 29 and continue every Friday evening through the month of June. Local bands will provide an evening of entertainment under the big oak trees. Bring a chair or a blanket and enjoy the music. In addition, free popcorn and water and other foods vendors will be available. Watch for our list of bands coming soon. New also this year will be our first annual Tributary Film Festival. This will be our maiden voyage into the world of small films. The event is headed by Colby Williams at Parengo Coffee. The film festival will be July 10 and 11 and will feature Q & A sessions headed by some of the region’s professors, after parties, and filming of short films in Downtown Sikeston. FinishinguptheyearwillbeourFallinLovewithSikeston wine festival on Center Street, the Cotton Festival of the Arts/Cotton Ramble Bike Ride, and our Holiday Open House with carriage rides and Santa. Over 800 patrons attended last year’s wine festival, and the Holiday Open House was a great success. Weather permitting, this will be a banner year for Historic Downtown Sikeston. Historic Downtown Sikeston is alive and well. Just come down any morning and look at the businesses. We have just about anything you want, with a big dose of Service added in. Our Downtown merchants provide a quality product with friendly service. In Downtown Sikeston you can get fitted, altered, repaired, fed, framed, loaned, clothed, surveyed, and beautified, and go to church when you’re done. Now changed to Men of Falkoff’s and Ladies we are proud to continue to be a part of Historic Downtown Sikeston and the community core. We love being a part of Historic Downtown Sikeston where we are working for the greater good of our community. • 15. CHAMBER THOUGHTSby Morgan Hough Assistant Director, Sikeston Regional Chamber 15 The Sikeston Regional Chamber Board of Directors has worked tirelessly over the past few months to develop a new strategic plan. Working with SEMO University’s Jim Caldwell, the board of directors, and the members of the strategic planning committee outlined a new direction for the Sikeston Regional Chamber. After considering the opportunities and challenges presented to the SRC by internal and external analysis, the board members, staff and the consultant implemented a new mission statement: The Sikeston Regional Chamber provides business growth and professional development for its members and is the place to go for community information. While the board members and planning committee recognize the hard work and efforts put forth by board members and chamber staff, everyone agreed there is room for improvement. After evaluating existing and potential resources, the chamber has reconstructed some of the systems and procedures in place and has reprioritized its direction for future development. The vision is to provide accurate, focused, and accessible information to members and the public. Providing business growth and professional development opportunities that cover current business topics, soft and hard skill training, cutting edge business practices, and technologies from local experts are our goals in the coming years. Revising the old mission and vision statements to better reflect the chamber member’s needs, industry trends, and overall purpose for the Sikeston-Miner business community will give stakeholders better assurance that the chamber is here to serve the businesses in this community. The chamber seeks keeping up with technologies and the changing trends of business, and we are open to unconventional ways of promoting businesses in our community. The improvement in Historic Downtown Sikeston is a perfect example of a strategic plan in action, identifying a need and working toward a goal can be seen downtown and throughout the community. We know how hard our business owners work; that is where the SRC can be helpful. For our chamber members, we can provide business educational tools, opportunities for relationship building, and enhancement for young professionals that businesses in the community might not be able to get otherwise. It is our goal to provide our members with the tools and skills they will need. Whether it is a workshop on how to increase the bottom line or a seminar on proper customer service techniques, we can provide the best possible growth opportunities for our members. As always, the Sikeston Regional Chamber is here for the Sikeston area’s businesses, and we welcome your suggestions and comments. The improvement in Historic Downtown Sikeston is a perfect example of a strategic plan in action.

  • 18. Growing up a musician in Sikeston hasn’t always been the easiest thing to do. Basement shows never really caught on around here, unless you count the Manhattan Room, but around 2007, those stopped too. Sikeston is filled with talented musicians who have been looking for a place to play in their hometown for years, and when Parengo Coffee opened downtown, it gave these musicians a place to express themselves in their art form, thanks to a monthly open mic night. Live music on the patio at Jeremiah’s after the wine festival.
  • 19. DOWNTOWNMUSIC The first Open Mic Night was hosted on April 4, 2014. It not only drew a large crowd to watch, but pulled in some of the best talent that Sikeston has to offer. Among these musicians were Jay Leible, Devin Scott, and myself, three people who have been to and performed at every open mic since our very first one. Open mic has gone “head-to- head” with many events in town, such has the rodeo and fall homecoming, and has pulled in a large crowd at each event, giving all of us involved a growing confidence in our decision to keep the downtown music scene going. Each open mic night draws in a regular group of performers as well as a rotating cast of talented musicians such as Kennedy Frohawk & The Fault-line, The Degenerates, Jacob Bond, Tray Phelps, and Jordan Powell. With this mix, every style of music is well represented. Not only do these musicians playtheirownarrangementsofpopularsongs, they also perform original compositions in a very intimate setting, allowing for them to gauge the reaction to the song with each individual person in the audience. Personally, open mic night has been a great event for me. Not only am I the host of the event, I play at them as well, and that allows me to get back into the live performing game that I haven’t been involved with since 2009. When I was approached to host the first open mic night, I jumped at the opportunity to get back into the Sikeston music scene. I talked with Devin Scott and Jordan Powell about what made them both want to participate in open mic and here’s what they had to say: “I really enjoy playing music, and I love the community it creates,” said Scott. “The great thing about open mic is that it incorporates both. It’s an everyone is welcome atmosphere that is laid back so you get to meet and chat with other musicians and artists in the area. It’s great.” “Sikeston needs more of the arts,” said Powell, who also plays solo shows at Parengo Coffee aside from open mic. “I’m passionate about the movement and I want to help it in anyway that I can!” If you’re interested in coming to open mic night to either participate or watch, we meet at Parengo Coffee on the second Friday of every month at 6 o’clock. 19

  • 21. DOWNTOWNMUSIC Not only does Parengo play host to a monthly open mic night, it also hosts a monthly ukulele club. The Last Tuesday Ukulele Club is hosted by Devin Scott and myself. The club is still slightly in its infant stages, but is growing in membership with every meeting. The ukulele has grown in popularity in the recent years thanks, in part, to actress/ singer Zooey Deschanel using it on her show New Girl and in her band She&Him. We’ve grown the ukulele club through very organic means, mostly by word of mouth. The first meeting of the club took place on July 26, 2014, with eight people attending. By the time our next meeting happened, we had doubled that number to sixteen, and we currently sit between seventeen and twenty two members on a monthly basis. The members of the club vary by age and occupation, from 15 year old high school freshmen to retired teachers in their mid 70s and everything in between. The members of the club also vary in skill level. Most people in the club hadn’t ever touched a ukulele until the first time they attended a meeting, while a few members have been playing for years. The combination of skill level means that if the instructors are both helping someone, there is another advanced player that can answer any questions and offer advice to anyone who needs it. If you’re interested in attending a Last Tuesday Ukulele club meeting, we meet on the last Tuesday of every month at Parengo Coffee in downtown Sikeston at six o’clock. You can find us on Facebook at Last Tuesday Ukulele, on Twitter @ lasttuesdayukulele, and email us at lasttuesdayukulele@gmail.com. As you can see, the music scene in Downtown Sikeston is alive and well thanks to Parengo Coffee and some dedicated musicians that work tirelessly to make sure the scene continues to thrive. We invite you to become part of the downtown music scene by attending any music event that you can attend. Keep an eye on what’s going on downtown, big things are happening. -AM 21

I couldn’t have told you the difference between pinstripe and windowpane, but they insisted no other place would do. All these years later, that jacket still hangs in my closet. The store has changed some, and its off-the-wrack styles are great for men and women, but there’s something about getting fitted just right that keeps us coming back for years.- CW IF IT AIN’T BROKE 23

  • 25. Q&Awith downtown server, Alyssa Quinonez, interviewed at Susie’s How long have you been a server? I’m actually pretty new at serving. I’ve only been at Susie’s for a couple of months, even though it feels longer! Describe the atmosphere at Susie’s. Delicious with a hint of chaotic What’s your favorite dish there? I always try to convince our customers to buy our Mississippi Mud Brownies. I’ll probably start drooling if I describe them. Does Susie’s have a signature dish? I like to think that my salads are my trademark as a waitress. I don’t just throw everything together! I think of every salad as an art project. The tougher the salads, the craftier I have to be! What’s the funniest thing that has happened to you as a server? One morning I felt parched so I drank a huge bottle of Smart Water. Whenever I got to work we were swamped with customers! Obviously I had to hold it till my last breath. As I was waiting on a table (wishing they would hurry and decide what they wanted) I cut them off while they were ordering and sprinted to the bathroom! When I came back I had to explain the whole thing... So embarrassed Do you have a regular crowd? Yes, we see familiar faces each and every day! We have customers that we can just glance at as they walk through the door and know what they are going to order. What is the best part of your job? My favorite part of working here at Susie’s is all of the amazing people I get to work with every day! -AM

Most days his front street store bursts with life: friends and family laughing, his kids, Blaise and Cash, playing, Sam’s father telling stories. “No one else in my family has ever been interested in the jewelry industry,” Sam said. “It’s such an awesome business and all the customers are great. I love it. Everyone is happy and everyone feels like family. The best part about working with my kids running about is all the people who are around to care and play with them. I love this community.” Soon, this space above his store will be just as alive. Later this year after months of hard work, Sam and his children will move into his newly renovated 2,000 square foot loft. “Sikeston is very family oriented and that’s the environment I want my kids to be raised in,” said Sam. “Living above my store will be so much easier with Cash and Blaise, so I can work at night.” by Anna Santora DOWNTOWN LIVING

If it wasn’t for the neighborhood, I would have nothing.” Downtown Sikeston seems to be the place for Sam and his little family. They light sparklers every day along the sidewalks in front of their future home. “No one minds. Everyone is so kind. She needed a change, so she chose Downtown Sikeston as a place to start over. “My life wasn’t where I wanted it to be before I moved to Sikeston.” said Skylar “I got married at an early age, and that didn’t work out well. My mistakes have definitely shaped me into a better person and I wouldn’t change a thing.” Moving Downtown helped shape her hopeful future. “I wanted to have my own place and all my friends lived in Sikeston.” said Skylar. “I really liked the location. The most important thing that’s happened since I’ve been here is: I got the opportunity to reconnect with my dad. I also met my boyfriend, Cullen. We met at Jeremiah’s, which is the best place to get a drink in Sikeston.” She and Cullen go to Jeremiah’s almost every weekend to let loose and eat good food. “And I need my coffee, so Parengo is where you’ll find me most of the time.” Skylar said. Skylar really enjoys the environment in Downtown Sikeston. She lives close to the police station, which makes her feel safe. “The neighborhood is very active and friendly. My apartment is small and cozy, and the view is great. There is a farmers market basically in my front yard, which is something I can definitely live with.” said Skylar. She has been living in Sikeston since May of this year and is happy to have met plenty of genuine people. “I am happy here and very thankful to live in such an energetic atmosphere.” said Skylar While the demand for loft apartments is growing in Sikeston, the supply remains limited. How property owners develop their spaces in the next few years will effect the entire Downtown business community, as the desire to eat, live, and play in the same neighborhood has finally reached our doors.

  • 35. ANSWERS ONLYReade Ferguson - Paul’s Pawn and Red Architect, LLC Interviewed by Cameron Godwin By trade, I am an architect; by profession, I’m now a pawnbroker. Without understanding the rest of the world, it’s hard to understand other people. You can’t judge people. That will backfire real quick. Let the customer tell you what they want. Don’t jump on them first. I can deal in anything and everything. If there us interest or value, let’s look at it. Even though we’re local, we have national people watching is all the time. I really enjoy woodworking. I think it is just . . . creating. It allows you to express any feelings you have. It may reflect what you feel, or it may reflect what you want people to feel. Food is a big passion of mine. I spent a year in Sweden studying Culinary Arts, so I’d love to see more cuisine Downtown. It is kind of nice to see and deal with something different every single day. I once pawned a horseshoer’s entire business. His livelihood was in a trailer, and I pawned it. I haven’t seen that amazing antique piece. It’s not Pawn Stars all the time. I could probably almost have built a house with all I’ve pawned. You see the good, the bad, the ugly, and things you ought not to see. Or smell. I’ve had guys come in with bleeding wounds trying to sell stuff to go to the hospital. I want to change the way people view pawn shops. People can come get a loan easier than opening a credit card if they have goods. And if they can’t pay, it doesn’t hurt them the same way. I keep a lot of people’s electricity on. That item acts as a credit card. It’s a line of credit. I hope to see my store as a bigger overall destination for Downtown. If people are looking for something, I hope they come Downtown. I can help with that. And not just myself, but Downtown as a whole. Any time there is an event Downtown, or just in Sikeston, there is an increase in foot traffic. You have to have open eyes. Look for talent everywhere. I never expected to end up here, but I love it. Dickering around is addictive. You just want to ask if they’ll take less. Even at grocery stores. For the most part, if you’re friendly to people, they are friendly back. I experience that every day. I think Downtown is going in the right direction. I hate to see old buildings unused. They have so much more character than we can produce now. The new ones are fake. The old ones portray a huge story. There should be a contrast. New should look new. I wish I could live in Downtown and not have to leave - live upstairs and shop downstairs Paul’s Pawn is located at 116 N. Kingshighway. Reade took over in January 2014 35

PATTY’S CELEBRATION
  • 38. HOMEBREWSNEAKPEAK Last year’s crowd favorite was brewed by Justin Wibbenmeyer and Bart Ziegenhorn. BRINK has your exclusive sneak peek into their process, as well as words from Ziegenhorn, the local champ, and brewmaster and judge Michael Mills. Check it out. Wegotintobrewingin2010.Ihad been bartending in Mississippi on the square at Ole Miss for about 6 years and had gotten into learning about beer. Justin Wibbenmeyer has been a sales rep for Ralph for years. I guess you could say we’ve both been in the beer business and always talked about starting our own. Randomly one day we took off to Fruitland to Homebrew Supply to check out some ingredients. Next thing we know, the truck is loaded up with much more than just ingredients. That was the start. We went straight back to Sikeston to brew a batch under the name “Nevertheless”. 38
  • 39. 39 Since then, we’ve been knee deep in reading, learning, buying random pieces of equipment, and working on that perfect recipe. We both have different styles that are our favorite, but one thing we both enjoy is a honey wheat. So since the beginning we’ve been changing our recipe, searching for that perfect honey wheat. It’s something we want to get just right before moving on to the next perfect beer. The Downtown St. Patrick’s celebration is an incredible event for Sikeston. Homebrew and microbrews are popping up all over the country. It’s awesome to see the passion and time these guys take to perfect their craft. The former owner of Anchor Beer, Fritz Maytag, once said, “Beer does not make itself properly by itself. It takes an element of mystery and of things that no one can understand.”
  • 40. ST. PATTY’S CELEBRATION Hosting this event in Malone Park is a huge part of bringing back Downtown. Having groups travel to our town, having the locals come out and enjoy the day, making friends, learning about the art of brewing, and forgetting about the stresses of life for a day is what it’s all about. It’s a celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, but to us it is a celebration of just plain ole fun in the town we love.
  • 41. Last year we brought our honey wheat, which has been tweaked yet again, a strawberry wheat to bring in the spring season, and a new improved coffee stout compliments of our very own Parengo Coffee. We will be bringing the same ideas again this year. We have a title to defend. And this year each recipe has been upgraded. Plus our tent area will be upgraded - presentation is important. Our motto is today was a good brew day. -Bart Ziegenhorn 41
  • 42. It’s fantastic to see beer culture move past the character-lacking beers that previous generations have settled for. Now we are embracing local breweries that hand-craft beers and showcase regional character and creativity. What is perhaps even more exciting is to see that beer culture is bringing that creative endeavor back home into our own kitchens. People have a new respect and appreciation for beer. The creative boundaries have been dropped as a result of the craft beer movement. Homebrewers are perhaps the greatest motivators because of their enthusiasm and willingness to take risks. They inspire professionals, and the circle of creativity keeps rolling as the evolution of beer thrives. It’s an awesome time in history to be a beer drinker! Homebrewing has been probably the single greatest catalyst in the craft beer movement. We all started out as homebrewers, joining clubs like the Hop Heads. Beer Has always given people an excuse to come together. Homebrewing gives beer drinkers something creative and fulfilling to do. It has also brought more attention to the possibilities of beer. Homebrewing is without question the chief motivator in the craft beer movement and the evolution of beer. - Mike Mills ST. PATRICK’S DAY42

  • 44. HERE’S A POEM WRITTEN ABOUT A PIECE OF ART DOWNTOWN: A glass bull is gazing at me with a level of determination that I can only ever dream of having. I’ve lived too much life with a careless attitude. I care now. I truly do. I feel like the sharpie man. My world once upside down; I was flipped in a way that People really had to look in order to see me. Now, right side up, I’m still shooting nonsense out of my mouth. If only I had the determination of the glass bull with the golden horns. Maybe then I could turn my nonsense into words like lightning bolt arrows.
