Introduction to linked open data
1. Linked Open Data An extremely high level view! by @asaletourneau July 2011
2. So what is it? Simply put (by someone else): “The expression ‘Linked Data’ is used to describe a method of exposing, sharing, and connecting data on the web” (http://consulting.talis.com/case-study/ordnace-survey-open-data)
4. What does this man and this band have in common? They both appear as linked data on the internet!
5. What do these two things have in common? Melbourne Bearbrass They are different names for the same geographic location, and they appear on the internet as linked open data...but I digress.
6. First things first… An introduction to the semantic web http://youtube.com/watch?v=OGg8A2zfWKg
7. Some insightful words on linked open data by Dr Tim Sherratt http://www.slideshare.net/wragge/a-hopefully-fairly-painless-introduction-to-linked-open-data http://discontents.com.au/foaf.rdf (Tim’s explanation of the ‘things’ he’s about using the foaf ontology) http://ow.ly/i/dZWu/original (my visualisation of the foaf excerpt above using http://semweb.salzburgresearch.at/apps/rdf-gravity/)
8. How do we describe data e.g. people, places, events, thoughts, feelings, images, twitter accounts to a machine? We need ontologies, formats, a way of uniquely identifying things, and a way of making these things discoverable over the internet If we do this we can start to make assertions about things that describe them in terms that machines can understand Then machines can help us link all this data together so that the internet becomes one big global database of human knowledge
9. Ontologies? http://schemapedia.com Formats? RDF describes resources with classes, properties, and values e.g. Asa is a person with a weight of x kgs http://www.w3schools.com/rdf/rdf_intro.asp
