Serious Youth Violence Project
The AoC London project to develop a checklist for Colleges dealing with serious youth violence
and gangs is almost complete. Thanks to all the colleagues who attended the three workshops
led by Peter Smith, project consultant. Your input was invaluable and helped shape what looks
like a very comprehensive checklist that all Colleges will be able to adapt to their own needs.
We will be holding a launch event for the checklist on the afternoon of Monday 13 June – please
hold the date in your diary – venue in central London tbc.
AoC Annual Conference - Gala Dinner Tables
The AoC events team has informed us that the high demand for tables/places at the Gala
Dinner means that they cannot reserve more than one regional table this year. Places on the
table will be offered first to members of the Regional Committee. The message is that if you
want to make sure that you are sharing a table with chosen colleagues and friends you need too
book early and get your table booking in quickly. We will send a prompt to Principals’ PAs at
the appropriate time.

national finals of a prestigious tailoring
competition.

The 2011 Golden Shears competition, sponsored by the Merchant Taylors' Company, attracted
entries from 80 colleges, universities and tailoring apprentices. It was a first time entry from
Havering College and the college is incredibly proud to have had two students shortlisted.
Laxmi and Carly had their suits judged on the catwalk for their design and style by a panel of
high-profile judges who included BBC’s Dragons’ Den investor Deborah Meaden and Jeremy
Hackett, the co-founder of Hackett men's clothing store.
As finalists they were presented with certificates by the Master of the Company.
32-year-old Laxmi is an international student from Gujarat in India. She stays with relatives
near Heathrow but says her two hour trip to Havering College is definitely worth it.
Havering College fashion lecturer John London said: “Many important people from the British
tailoring and fashion industry were at the ceremony. It is the first time Havering College
fashion students have entered the Golden Shears competition and to have two students selected
as finalists is a fantastic accolade for the whole fashion team.
