1. AoC London Region Members’ Bulletin
27 July 2012 – Issue 119
Dear Colleagues,
On the opening day of the London 2012 Olympic Games I wanted to promote our developing
and highly valued working relationship with British Colleges Sport (BCS).
BCS, as the delivery arm for College sport, takes the lead for extra curricular sports specific
sessions, competitions and pathways to excellence. BCS organises a competition framework
throughout England and Wales, runs representative teams in five sports, and manages the
highly successful Lead Further programme.
The London Regional Co-ordinator for BCS, Carla Emmanuel, is now located right here in the
AoC London office at Stedham Place. Some of you will have met Carla as she has been out and
about visiting and working with London Colleges in recent weeks. Carla has contributed an
update to today’s AoC London Bulletin (see below) and is keen to get to know London Colleges
even better over the coming months, so please get in touch to find out more.
Please note the Bulletin will have its usual summer recess over August. The next edition of the
AoC London Bulletin will be published on 14 September 2012 and fortnightly after that as usual
so keep your items coming in. In the meantime, have a great time throughout the London 2012
Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Best wishes
Caroline Neville

OTHER NEWS AND UPDATES
British Colleges Sport, BCS
Hello All,
My name is Carla Emmanuel and as Caroline has mentioned above I am the London Regional
Coordinator for British Colleges Sport. An organisation, now is in partnership with the AoC
working to ‘encourage and enable students and Colleges to develop their potential by providing sporting
opportunities and services’.
I’m now 2 months into the role and am slowly but surely getting used to the workings of both
organisations. With London being a new Region for BCS I’m excited for the opportunities
which can come from building it up. For the Colleges already affiliated to BCS I will take the
opportunity, through Bulletins to relay any important notices, meeting dates or events.

4. AoC London Region Members’ Bulletin, 27 July 2012
Currently my focus is on the Regional Tournament which will be happening in the first term.
As soon as venues are confirmed an email will be sent to the Colleges’ Heads of Sport.
Nationally we have been working on Intra-College sport initiatives and offers with National
Governing Bodies, and have recently created six Intra-College offers in sport including Cricket,
Football and Basketball. As the Sport England funding is on the verge of being released we are
also on hand to help Colleges get the most of the funding they receive either through their
College Sport Makers, or the Activation Funds.
‘Inspire a generation of young people to take part in local volunteering, cultural, and physical
activity’. With the Games being held in London, it would be fantastic to see participation in
sport rise within the FE sector, where statistically, it tends to be at its lowest.
Any College who hasn’t affiliated and would like to talk through the benefits of joining, I’d like
to say it’s not too late and please feel free to contact me via mobile 07725235007 or email
CarlaEmmanuel@bcsport.org.
I’m looking forward to working with your Colleges.
Kind Regards and enjoy the Olympics!
Carla Emmanuel

Radio1Xtra’s Tim Westwood came to Hackney to check out the talent at HCC SummerFest. He
judged an Open Mic competition, open to students and other local artists, and commented
‘there’s a LOT of talent here’. He went on to introduce the spectacular fashion show.
Sitting beside the catwalk, Tim tweeted a photo of
HCC student fashion design to his 275,143 followers
with the message: ‘Catwalk front row at Hackney
Community College. A lot of proud parents in here!’
The Open Mic contest was run in conjunction with
Rising Tide. As well as a prize of £100, two
professional studio sessions were awarded to
winners.
