Drought, Encroachment Driving Animals to Populated Areas
California home and business owners are seeing more and more raccoons, skunks, and other
animals on their property as drought conditions and human encroachment on wild areas are
causing these animals to seek the greener pastures of the L.A. area’s manicured lawns and
gardens. This is resulting in a growing problem with wildlife control in Los Angeles and other
California communities.
A Growing Problem
California is suffering through its fourth year of drought, which is not only putting pressure on
human drinking supplies, but also on natural habitats. Because competition for scarce food
supplies caused by drought and overdevelopment is so intense, many animals are wandering into
populated areas seeking a comfortable habitat. Also, in many cases, wild animals showing up in
residential areas isn’t a matter of the animals encroaching on our areas as it is a matter of humans
encroaching on theirs with new developments. Many animals hate to leave familiar grounds, and
will try to continue to live in areas even after they’ve been developed into residential areas.
The problem is greater than just a few knocked over trash cans. Dangerous encounters between
humans and animals are increasing as wild animals are increasingly seeking food and water in
residential areas. Although animal attacks are rare, encounters between humans and hungry or
frightened animals can end in injuries for the humans and (more likely) death for animals.
Wildlife venturing into residential areas can also result in deadly attacks on pets like dogs and
cats.
It’s also not just small nuisance animals like raccoons or skunks that the drought is driving into
the suburbs. Larger, more dangerous animals are also being increasingly spotted in residential
areas. According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, complaints about black
bears have jumped from 224 to 449 between 2013 and 2014.
Humane Removal
Property owners should engage the services of Los Angeles skunk removal and other wildlife
removal professionals when skunks and other types of wild animals become a nuisance in their
area. Wildlife removal professionals know how to ensure all unwanted animals are removed, and
they’re also trained in exclusion tactics that will ensure that these animals don’t return.
Not all animal removal tasks must end with the death of an animal. In many cases, there are
humane methods for getting rid of undesired animals. Most involve the use of non-lethal traps.
Property owners interested in humane removal of animals should discuss their desires with their
Los Angeles animal removal specialist. Property owners should request an explanation of the
company’s removal techniques as well as their plans concerning what to do with any young they
may encounter. It’s also important to discuss anti-intrusions measures the company will install to
prevent future incursions.
To get unwanted animals out of your neighborhood in a humane and responsible manner, contact
Animal Capture Wildlife Control, a trusted name in animal removal in Los Angeles and nearby
communities. Professional animal trappers with the company will quickly resolve the issue, and
can do so in an ethical and humane manner.
