     INTERNET
 September    1969;
 United State of America – Department of
     Defend (DoD) started The Advanced
     Research Project Agency (ARPA)
 The first ARPANET node was installed at
     University of California, Los Angeles
 Mid1970s – ARPANET covered to more
than 30 universities, military fields, and
 government contractors
5

11.1 INTRODUCTION TO THE
     INTERNET (cont)
 The used of internet bloomed the computer
    science community
 1983 the internet had hundreds of computer
    connected within the network
 1985, The National Science Foundation (NSF)
collaborated with ARPA to support the
development of supercomputer centers and the
    computer science research in ARPANET
 NSF sponsored one program to repair the
backbone of ARPANET by increasing the
bandwidth from 56Kbps into T-1 and then into T-3,
and also formed branches that connected
international web in Europe and Middle East
6

11.1 INTRODUCTION TO THE
     INTERNET (cont)
 1989 – the responsibility and management of
ARPANET was officially handover by the DoD
to the NSF which was research oriented
 Since then, research organization and
universities became the user of the internet
 Most of the etiquette and rule of use for
internet such as sending email and
information to the newsgroup was created at
    that time
7

11.1 INTRODUCTION TO THE
     INTERNET (cont)
 Mid 1990s – internet had created connection
within 60 countries and more than 2 millions
computers with more than 15 millions user world
    wide
 The used of internet for the reason of
commercialization and business was not permitted
until the year 1992, however, businesses had
become the core to the development of internet
 2001 – about 407.1 millions internet user covering
    6.71% world population
 2003 – more than 550 billions documents online
and about 7.3 millions documents and websites
    developed each day
8

11.1 INTRODUCTION TO THE
     INTERNET (cont)
 Internet
         is formed by connecting local
network to the computers in each
  network which is called gateways
 Gateway connections can be through;
   Phone line
   Fiber optic cable
   Radio connection
 Additional
           network can be connected
 through a new gateway
9

11.1 INTRODUCTION TO THE
     INTERNET (cont)
 Information sent from computer to
  another computer assigned by the
  address of the computer
 Different address formats are used for
  different services via internet
 One of it known as dotted decimal like
  123.4.5.67.89
 Other like “machine.dept.univ.edu”
10

11.1 INTRODUCTION TO THE
     INTERNET (cont)
 Endof each address represents
 organization type, such as;
  Education = .edu
  Military = .mil
  Government = .gov
  Non-profit organization = .org
  Malaysian website = .my
11

11.1 INTRODUCTION TO THE
     INTERNET (cont)
 Services    via internet;
   File transfer or FTP
   Email
   Telnet
   UseNet
   Chat
