- iBooks is a free app available on iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. It can read documents in two main formats - ePub and pdf. We will take a quick look at the two formats and then you´ll have a chance to explore some of the features of iBooks.....\n

- iBooks stores documents in the bookshelf.\nThe latest update of iBooks gives you access to a feature called collections that allows you to sort your books into different sets each with their own bookshelf. This is very useful in a school environment for organising by curriculum areas for example.\nNotice also the Store button which gives you access to an iTunes like store to purchase books also there are a huge number of free books that you can download.\n
- The pdf format has access to features such as search, note the pages laid out across the bottom of the screen which allow you to quickly move around the document.\nPdf format also allows you to print and email documents.\n

- The ePub format has a number of enhance features.\nCover pages and tables of contents can be added using Pages or other ePub creation software (inDesign or free Calibre).\nPages really turn by holding and dragging in the direction you wish to turn\n
- Other useful features include being able to change fonts and font size, which are useful additional acccessibility tools\n
- Clicking on individual words brings up a floating menu giving access to a number of really useful tools allowing students to annotate documents, highlight keywords in text, look up words they are unfamiliar with or search for similar words\n
- The search feature can also be accessed as in pdfs by clicking on the maginifying glass in the top right corner.\nWords are given in context \n
- We are going to have a quick look at some of the features in iBooks....\nGive out iPads....collect back at end of this section (I think)\n
- Downloading ePubs and opening pdf documents is only part of the appeal of iBooks I think.\nTeacher and student created content has huge appeal and allows you and students to personalise content creating bespoke resources.\n

- We are going to have a look at how to create a ePub format document in Pages and then go through the process of transferring it to our mobile device....\nThis process starts in Pages on the Mac...Pages is part of the iWork suite\n
- At this point open pages, use photo booth to record a piece of video and then drag and drop, add some text and export.\n

- We then exported as an ePub and dragged the ePub into iTunes and onto our mobile device.\nGreat potential for use with students and at my school teachers have just started to explore this -\nTwo teachers currently making Spanish phrase books with video clips and audio clips embedded allowing students to practise conversations, pronounciation - all being done using built in isight cameras and microphone\nAnother teacher is making a iBook as a way of pulling all the parts of History project together, students create a chapter each and then the class intend to collate chapters to make one book.\nThe finished ePubs will also be uploaded to our VLE so that students can download at home and transfer to their own mobile devices\n
