3. Rule 1
Use a singular verb with a singular subject and
a plural verb with a plural subject.
Eg.
Rachel dances well.
She dances well.
Rachel and Roy dance well.
4. Rule 2
When using the ‘be’ form of verbs,
there is an exception.
Person Pronoun Verb Example
1st Person Singular I am/was I am bold.
1st Person Plural We are/were We are bold.
2nd Person Singular/Plural You are/were We are bold
3rd Person Singular She, He, It is/was She is bold.
He is bold.
It is beautiful.
3rd Person Plural They are/were They are bold.
5. Rule 3
All 3rd person singular subjects use
‘has’ and all plural subjects and 1st
and 2nd person singular use ‘have’.
Eg.
I have a younger brother.
You have taken the wrong cut.
Swetha has a pet dog.
6. Rule 4
Compound subjects combined
using the conjunction ‘and’ take
a plural verb.
Eg.
The cat and dog play in the garden.
Ammu and Meenu eat sandwiches.
7. Rule 5
When more than one noun is joined by the
conjunction ‘or’, the subject is considered to
be singular and a singular verb is used.
Eg.
The cat or dog plays in the garden.
A pen or a pencil is used for writing.
