I won’t detail each of the capabilities represented across the top of this slide that the joint Microsoft – Provance solution supports. These are all well documented in the Products section at www.provance.com. However, these are a useful reference to identify customer requirements. For example, if you hear your customer express a need to manage contracts or leases, or improve asset purchasing, or respond to a license audit, these all suggest a potential application of the Microsoft – Provance solution. There are two special cases here that are worth highlighting: IT service management and CMDB.The Provance solution does not provide service management functionality, such as ITIL processes like incident, problem, change, configuration and release management. And Provance is not a Configuration Management Database, or CMDB, which have been popularized as an important element in supporting service management; however, Provance is an important data provider to both the service desk application and CMDB. IT asset management information improves decision support at the service desk and is an important source of data – a Management Data Repository or MDR – for the CMDB.One of the reasons I want to highlight this is that right now we’re currently working with Microsoft in a number of competitive bids against BMC. Our positioning in these accounts is that Provance acts as not just as an IT asset management repository, but can serve as an MDR data provider that feeds information from Configuration Manager, Active Directory and Operations Manager to the BMC IT service management environment – which can be either the federated Atrium CMDB or the BMC IT Service Desk. There’s also a strong case to be made that IT asset management is an essential pre-requisite for CMDB deployment. In other words, you need to have an accurate asset registry in place to help properly populate the CMDB – otherwise, it becomes and exercise of garbage in, garbage out. Given the fact that it takes typically three to five years to get an operational CMDB properly set up and running, you can take this approach to start customers off with an asset management project that will bridge the gap until the Microsoft System Center Service Manger CMDB is available in about a year.In any case, when you encounter customers with a strong IT service management, ITIL or CMDB agenda, Provance can help support your engagement. Our account execs are happy to help you build a joint engagement strategy in competitive accounts, like we’re doing with BMC. You can also refer our two white papers, about how IT asset management supports IT service management and how IT asset management is an important prerequisite for CMDB implementation.
