Let’s look at the next topic, AWS core services.
AWS has a number of core services in compute, storage, and database categories, which serve as building blocks for the infrastructure .
For compute, there is Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, or EC2. Here are a few foundational features that Amazon EC2 provides:
Virtual computing environments, known as instances. Various configurations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking capacity for your instances, known as instance types. You can use load balancing with EC2 called Elastic Load Balancing, or ELB, and to auto scale, in which you can set triggers to automatically increase or decrease the number of instances in your deployment.
There are a number of storage services, including a very large object store called Amazon Simple Storage Service, or S3. A block store called Elastic Block Store, or EBS, goes with the Amazon EC2 compute service. With AWS Import/Export, you can quickly transfer large amounts of data into and out of the AWS cloud. Amazon Glacier is an archival and backup service that costs about one penny per gigabyte per month. AWS Storage Gateway connects an on-premises software appliance with cloud-based storage to provide seamless and secure integration between an organization’s on-premises IT environment and AWS’s storage infrastructure.
There are a number of database services. We have a relational database service called Amazon RDS that comes in flavors of MySQL, Postgres, Oracle, SQL server, and now, Amazon Aurora. Amazon Aurora combines the speed and availability of high-end commercial databases with the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of open-source databases. Additionally, AWS has developed a very high throughput, very low latency, fast NoSQL database service called Amazon DynamoDB and a caching service called Amazon ElastiCache.
AWS has a number of networking capabilities on top of these core services. Amazon Virtual Private Cloud, or, VPC, effectively allows customers to provision a private, isolated section of the network into which they can deploy resources. Customers can set up subnets, some of which you can addressed set up exclusively to with IP addresses that customers are using, while other subnets can be set up to be accessible through the Internet that connects to their own data center topology through VPN. Most of the enterprise customers are using VPC.
AWS Direct Connect is a private connection between the customer’s data centers and AWS. This links your internal network to an AWS Direct Connect location over a standard 1-gigabit or 10-gigabit Ethernet fiber-optic cable. One end of the cable is connected to your router, the other to an AWS Direct Connect router.
Amazon Route 53 is a highly scalable DNS service that routes end users to Internet applications by translating human-readable names into numeric IP addresses like 192.0.2.1 that computers use to connect to each other.

HSM – Hardware Security Module. You control de encryption keys and cryptographic operations performed by the HSM.
Notas originais
AWS Identity and Access Management, or IAM, enables AWS customers to manage users and user permissions for their organization. AWS Directory Service is a managed service that allows you to connect your AWS resources with an existing on-premises Microsoft Active Directory or to set up a new, standalone directory in the AWS cloud. AWS CloudHSM helps you meet corporate, contractual, and regulatory compliance requirements for data security by using dedicated hardware security module (HSM) appliances within the AWS cloud. With CloudHSM, you control the encryption keys and cryptographic operations performed by the HSM.

Let’s look at the next topic, the AWS Platform Services.
Scientists, developers, and many other technologists from many different industries are taking advantage of Amazon Web Services to perform big data analytics and meet the challenges of the increasing volume, variety, and velocity of digital information.
Amazon Kinesis is a fully managed, cloud-based service for real-time processing of large, distributed data streams.
Amazon Redshift is a fast, fully managed, petabyte-scale data warehouse solution that makes it simple and cost-effective to efficiently analyze all your data using your existing business intelligence tools. Amazon Redshift is the fastest growing service in AWS history.
Amazon Elastic MapReduce (Amazon EMR) is a web service that makes it easy to quickly and cost-effectively process vast amounts of data.
Amazon EMR uses Hadoop, an open source framework, to distribute your data and processing across a resizable cluster of Amazon EC2 instances. Customers have launched more than 15 million Hadoop clusters on Amazon EMR since launch.
HIVE
The Apache Hive ™ data warehouse software facilitates querying and managing large datasets residing in distributed storage. Hive provides a mechanism to project structure onto this data and query the data using a SQL-like language called HiveQL.
PIG
Apache Pig is a platform for analyzing large data sets that consists of a high-level language for expressing data analysis programs, coupled with infrastructure for evaluating these programs. The salient property of Pig programs is that their structure is amenable to substantial parallelization, which in turns enables them to handle very large data sets.

Amazon Web Services provides you with services to help with the deployment and management of your applications. This includes services to help with management of credentials for access to AWS services, monitor your applications, create and update stacks of AWS resources, deploy applications, use hardware security modules (HSMs), and log AWS API activity.
AWS Elastic Beanstalk is an easy-to-use service for deploying and scaling web applications and services developed with popular programming languages such as Java, .NET, PHP, Node.js, Python, and Ruby. AWS OpsWorks is an application management service that makes it easy for DevOps users to model and manage the entire application from load balancers to databases.

Module 4: Security and Compliance
Some customer requirements can be fulfilled natively in the AWS cloud platform. We refer to this as security OF the cloud. Others are controls that AWS exposes at a platform level across multiple services that customers choose how to configure; for example, AWS IAM policies. And still others will be service-specific controls; for example, security group configurations or Amazon S3 bucket policies. Finally, some controls customers will choose to deploy within their Amazon EC2 instances; for example, host base intrusion detention. We refer to controls that customers configure as security IN the cloud.
