2. What Is Side Stream Filtration?
• Side Stream Filtration is used to remove
suspended solids and sludge from a closed
loop system, including Biofilms and
Pseudomonas (Bacteria)
• Amazon Filters generally specifies a cartridge
system, but other technologies such as
hydro-cyclones, separators etc are suitable
for removing large debris, but lack the high
efficiency of cartridges
3. What Are The Sources of Contamination?
• Corrosion of pipework and components leads
to abrasive wear, resulting in fouling of heat
exchangers and valve malfunction
• The bacteria and biofilm can be chemically
treated with biocides which stops bacteria
growth, but the dead material (sludge) only
adds to the re-circulating mass
• Amazon Filters Side Stream systems are a
practical and cost effective solution to
these problems
4. Where We Fit Side Stream Filters
• Typical systems for side stream filtration are
Low Temperature Hot Water (LTHW), Chilled
Water (CHW) and Condenser Circuits
• Each system will generally have primary and
secondary circuits, supplying radiators,
heating coils and air conditioning units
• Examples - Kings Cross Station, Paddington
Central, State Street Bank, Great Ormond St
Hospital, New Olympic Stadium, T5 Heathrow
6. Side Stream System Design
• 5 -15% of primary circuit flow rate
• Amazon 60 Series Filter Housing
• SupaSpun II and SupaGard Cartridges
• 2 bar minimum working pressure, or booster
pumps may be required
• Cartridge change–out recommended at 1bar
pressure differential
• Typically installed inside Building Plant Room
