Reddit was founded in 2005 by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian. It was later bought by Conde Nast Publications. Reddit operates out of San Francisco and functions as a social news aggregation site where users can discover and share new content through customizable subreddits on various topics. Users can also vote on posts and comments to determine their popularity through a karma points system.

Back in 2005, Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian drove up to Harvard to see Paul Graham give a speech on “How to Start a Start-Up”. Inspired by him, they were able to sit down with Graham and lay out their idea for what would eventually become reddit. With the seed money from Graham’s company, Y Combinator, the two young entrepreneurs set out to fill a void that RSS feeds only attempted to cover.
Anonymity is a big draw for the website, while also a hurdle (more on that later in presentation). Also, it is relatively independent of other social media sites, but works with other sponsors for special offers through Reddit Gold.
Reddit gold – offers special features (points out new comments in thread, notifications when username is tagged, turn off ads, and special offers from sponsors – UPS, several online clothing retailers, cookies, Reddit Gifts)
Troll – someone who posts offensive material to get downvoted
Lurker – someone who views a post without commenting or voting

Other fun reddits include r/vinyls, r/nosleep, and r/explainlikeim5
Offensive subreddits include r/jailbait, r/gore, r/theredpill, and r/creepshots. Although, in good news, a Georgia teacher was fired last year after he posted a “creepshot” of one of his students on the subreddit. Other redditors (including one who knew the girl) reported him to the school and local authorities.
