Rob’s welcome remarksNancy – review agenda and what will be covered
It seems we have lost our way and our focus. We heard that you aren’t so sure about what we are funding and how to get funds from Alliance. I’m hoping that after today you are clearer about what we are all about. I’m hoping to bring you more clarity about our funding strategies and the common themes we talk about at Alliance Healthcare Foundation.
You told us that we used to be more visible in the community. Of course the absence of an Executive Director for over a year didn’t help, but we pledge to be out there learning from you and hearing about the needs of your community.
Yep, you’re right. There have been a lot of changes & I contributed to those changes. All organizations go through periods of restructuring and Alliance Healthcare Foundation is no different. - Change is inevitable in any organization, and it is difficult to say goodbye to people we have grown to like and respect. Sometimes those changes are based on budget necessity. Our board has set a goal of 25% operating expenses so more money flows out to the community.- We are engaged in an ongoing process of exploring our goals and strategies in improving retention.- We don’t have all of the answers right now. What we do have is a team of smart, innovative leaders who are dedicated to solving these issues.
I think I know where this comes from but I have to say that in the short time I have worked with this board I think it is quite the opposite. Yes the process we used last year was different – but they wanted to find a fair way to get money out the door and they did it the best way they knew how. Yes, it looked like favoritism to you, but it was a thoughtful process. This year it is an open grant process – everyone is invited to apply meets our criteria. There will be more on this later. This board may seem different to you but they are pretty straight forward about how they operate. Instead of proscribing what they want, they want to hear from you about what works and how you are preparing for the future. They want to see that you are looking at ways to reduce costs or improve quality or increase capacity. They aren’t interested in just funding the status quo. As you will hear in the Mission Support grants, they want to fund your mission because you are looking at ways to constantly improve on what you are doing.
We hear you. And I believe that you will see that Alliance is very willing to do this. What that means is that we will be talking more about “advancing health & wellness for those in need”. Our interest in funding the broader field means we will be making choices between a greater variety of programs, much as we did last year.
So we heard you. You told us valuable information that has informed our process for 2012. One thing I did was I went back to our strategic plan and I found some powerful words about what we want to do in San Diego & Imperial Counties. I didn’t think they matched up with our messages, our look nor our website. Change maker – Invest in technology and ideas with the greatest potential for return on investmentInnovate – Foster entrepreneurship and innovation in the delivery of health/healthcare to the most vulnerable populations of San Diego & Imperial Counties.Engage - Develop collaborative relationships throughout the community to “make our investment in the community go further.”Sustain - Ensure key AHF issues and funded programs/initiatives are part of the fabric of San Diego & Imperial CountiesAccountable – Hold ourselves and the community accountable for accomplishing what we set out to do.So I launched a re-branding campaign.
We have a new logo & a new tagline. We hope you see the broader range of health and wellness in our logo. I invited you to have your picture taken in front of our backdrop. We are updating our website and it will be launched by the time you walk out of this forum. We are celebrating the great work of our grantees and highlighting the great communities we serve. There is clarity in our various types of grants and how to apply. So let’s hear more about this.
Rob
You will hear more about this $1M funding mechanism that we have used to look at broader systemic change and innovation such as Text4Baby, One-e-app and this year the CIE – Community Information Exchange
A responsive grant request cannot exceed $25,000. Responsive grants may:be time sensitive Allow to participate in an important co-funding opportunity with other fundersProvide a novel funding opportunitysupport leadership & organizational developmentprovide community support for a community event or activity (usually do not exceed $10,000)
Going back to our strategic vision as we talk about the Mission Support Grants. We are also looking at cost efficiency, quality improvements and capacity building impacts. It is our mission support grants where we hope to be able to diversify our funding across the broader health and wellness areas. Different than most foundations we aren’t looking to fund a particular program. Even though we ask about your innovative programs, we are giving money to those organizations that show they can be innovative, or are ready to jump into the innovative/creative realm. We want to hear from you what you think is the best practice for your area or how you are thinking you can begin to prepare for the future based on the changing trends and the fact that there will continue to be less money and more need in the future.
When we are making funding decisions we will also take into account how we are spreading funds throughout the 2 county region.
Compared to the ethnic mix in our two counties we are doing fairly well in matching the ethnic mix.
We also look at how well we are reaching our target populations. For each of these last 3 areas, if the maps and numbers were to show an adjustment were necessary we would take that into account in making our funding decisions.
These are also other factors we consider as we make our funding decisions.
For each of the 4 funding areas: poor & working poor (under 250%FPL); uninsured/underinsured, children & homeless, we want to know how many you are serving. Whereas we prefer actual numbers we recognize that you might not capture this information at this time. In that case, give us your best estimate.
