1. Artist Bio
March 2, 2015 at 12:25pm
A young immigrant from the Philippine Islands, Allan Roman Reyes grew up in Los
Angeles in the 1980’s. Here he learned, along with the rest of the nation, about
computers, the Internet, and technologies that would change data exchange between
humans forever. Working in the technical field for the better part of his life, Allan learned
about the technology that would bring his message to the world.
During the course of his journey, Allan learns about the artistic side of his personality
through various art classes offered through the community colleges of Los Angeles. Allan
theorizes that color is a primal language and, just like music, is another form of
communication. He begins to formulate a personal style of painting involving the
subconscious and intuitive techniques. He also re-discovers a personal and integral
connection with the earth and its parts, especially native ecological structures and
systems. He begins to formulate connections between art, nature, and man’s spiritual
inheritance and applies discoveries through practicing (and teaching) plein-air and studio
visual studies in oil and watercolor.
Underneath this all, Allan starts to understand that the family (in all its forms) informs us,
since we are social beings, and is an integral part of an individual’s personality. He begins
to understand the importance of an individual’s upbringing and how it impacts the life
lived as a productive adult in society and decides to involve the youth positively in every
part of his journey.
His journey now seems to point him towards man and the figurative. The essence of the
landscapes he formerly painted will inform what is to come: a study of the human
condition.
My art is not express things that are there but 'it is a drive to express ideas about a
mystical, all-encompassing energy, in the confines of a physical world, and underlying it
all is the uniting principle of love, expressed in many different ways, but unshakeable and
infinite at its core.'
2. Artist Statement
Art is communication in its purest sense. It conveys primal messages through emotions
regulated by the visual stimuli: direct visceral connotations to archetypes formed in our
subconscious. Its practice is a hard one, some of its best are pure translators, able to
render the original word for word without reference to persona. Some, however, take the
form and infuse it with something of their own; something gotten from the world
through pain and trial... and return and learning. These are the ones you must allow to
spring forth and prosper; for they are the ones extending the medium. For all of it’s
worth, they put themselves at the edge of emotion and reference to the reality that is
deemed the normal by most of the populace. Suffering to get their message out, most
are mis-understood at youth, and never allowed to express, rather, they are allowed to
find solace in activities that blur their true core. -I know. -I was there.
My reason here, as I find it in art is to show the youth these options through art. To
show them that there is a language that they can communicate in even when they can’t
get a simple point across to their parents or kin. An Option is most only what anyone
needs to make the right decision. We are good people, and we know that, but backed
into a corner most will only react to preserve, and what is evil when you’re doing it to
survive?
Everything is grey like the sumi-e I work in: things that are far are a little blurry, but the
edges are defined as they are brought forward and examined in the light. I plan to take
art and its intuitive lessons (encompassing nature and natural ecology), lessons lost in
the past such as indigenous teachings, mind-expanding research and practices, and meld
this with the one burning question that runs through us all: why am I here?
Quest with me.
Question 2.
Art has a natural affinity with nature. Los Angeles is a city that has an inherent symbiosis
with nature, ever since the Los Angeles River flowed down from the San Gabriel
3. Mountains at its founding. It also is a growing city; with art, I bring awareness to the
important natural elements of our environment: the Los Angeles River, our San Gabriel
Mountains, and many of the Gardens that reside in our city. A document of them
photographed through an artistic lens can be seen at http://instagram.com/tigerar1, and
of them painted at: http://allanromanreyes.com
I am a student of classic and natural learning; I believe in the proper foundational
courses for art, and have taken a number of college-level classes, but I also believe in an
artist’s own sense or organic learning and freedom. There is something to be said about
an artist’s love for what he does; no kind of course is going to tell him what to do, but
knowing the rules is knowing what to break, and knowing what has come and passed
will provide insight on things to come again. I am melding past, modern, and future
styles and progressing Art as an artist of Los Angeles. My history and learning in the
man-made world can be found at http://www.linkedin.com/in/allanromanreyes,

Los Angeles is now reacting to a normal return to drought conditions. There are many
ecological changes we, as a society, have incorporated, and these changes have now put
us at a disadvantage in resources. Native ecology is one of the key conservation
movements aiming to help return us to a more ‘natural’ condition in our environments
and in our lives. I am using art to increase knowledge about our native natural
ecology, as well as to encourage a harmonious relationship between man and his
world. A document of the community I live, breathe, work, and dream in is

As you can see from the links listed above, I am communicating my message to the
broader community through a personality fostered and taught by Los Angeles. With
examples communicated through the web and through personal workshops and
programs, I want to reach as many as I can and walk the path with them in Art.
