5. How SBP works
• The SBP provides reimbursement to school who offer free or reduced priced breakfasts for
students.
•Administered by U.S. department of Agriculture.
6. Eligibility to Participate in SBP
•Children at or below 130% of the federal poverty level are eligible for free breakfast.
•Children that are between 130% and 185% of the federal poverty level qualify for reducedpriced breakfasts. (Cannot be charged more than $0.30)
•Children above 185% of the federal poverty level pay for the meals, price set by schools.

Was established as a two year pilot program but after the success rate, the extensions kept going until it was a permanent program.
Children are less likely to be overweight, have better nutrition, eat more fruit and drink more milk. Has shown improvement in classroom discipline, decrease in psychological problems, less visits to nurse and tardiness. Attendance has improved.
Attendance increased when breakfast program was in effect.
