WHAT ARE SMART PRODUCTS?
DATA IN
•	ENVIRONMENT (SENSORS)
•	USER (UI)
•	BIG DATA
•	OTHER DEVICES
DATA UIT
•	USER (UI)
•	BIG DATA
•	OTHER DEVICES
Smart products collect data from 1 or more source(s) ; process this data ; and
distribute this data or the results of the processing to the user or other parties ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
GOAL OF SMART PRODUCTS?
= ++ +
Smart products aim to instantly expand the abilities of the user. Super-powers
beyond the normal human capabilities; an enormous amount of knowledge and
expert skills and insights are available at any time.

SMART PRODUCTS EXAMPLE
HEXA+ Automatisch volgende drone
The HEXO+ smart drone can automatically locate itself relative to the user and alows the
user to make spectaculair, (semi-) professional video’s without any special equipment. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
SMART PRODUCTS EXAMPLE
EVERNOTE ‘CONTEXT’- Wile you are working on an Evernote document, the ‘context’
feature will recognise keywords and present related info found in your own or colleages
documents, relevant articles from newspapers, etc. to expand your knowledge on the topic.

2015?
TREND 1. WEARABLES
2000
2010
Before the smartphones, ‘smart functions’ were enabled by different specific devices. Later
all functionalities were implemented in 1 device (smartphone). The following years, these
functionalities will be embedded in wearables.
ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
WEARABLES EXAMPLE
BARCLAYCARD develloped a specific Bpay band for the supporters of Southampton
FC. The band will integrate contactless payments with exclusive loyalty offers, special
experiences and prize draws for supporters.
ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
WEARABLES
FORRESTER.COM asked users in Europe & North America on wich parts of the body
they would be interested to wear a device. This is the result. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
MORE THAN WEARABLES?
“ENCHANTED OBJECTS”
David Rose, MIT Media Lab
=
The word “Wearables” limits the focus mainly to clothing and accessories. That’s why
David rose prefers to speak of “enchanted objects”. These are everyday object that have
“magical powers” like this intelligent umbrella that can predict the rain (similar to Frodo’s
sword that predicts approaching enemies in “The Lord of the Rings”).

WEARABLES CHALLENGE
DATA IN
•	ENVIRONMENT (SENSORS)
•	USER (UI)
•	BIG DATA
•	OTHER DEVICES
DATA UIT
•	USER (UI)
•	BIG DATA
•	OTHER DEVICES
Smart products (& wearables) will collect a huge amount of data. One of the main
challenges in the design of wearables will be to find good ways to communicate
this data to, and interact with the user.
ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
WEARABLES DISPLAYS
It will not only be a challenge to fit all this info on a display that is small enough to wear (like an APPLE
WATCH). Not everybody will like to wear an obvious display around their wrist. Some will prefer more
discrete sollutions that fits better with their outfit (like these WITHINGS & MONTBLANC examples).

COGNITIVE SCIENCE
TREND 2. FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE
NBIC
Multiple area’s in (computer) science will have a large impact on the evolution of
healthcare. Healthcare will be more and more IT & data driven. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
“IT’ERS ARE THE DOCTORS
OF THE FUTURE”
	 Dr. Daniel Kraft, Exponential Medicine
FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE
... as they will devellop the algoritms that will evaluate the collected data, compare it with
big data, etc. Diagnoses will be formulated through modern data processing techniques in
stead of the expertise of 1 specific doctor. The future of healthcare is data driven.
ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
vs.
FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE
A diagnose made by software instead of a doctor may sound a little scary, but it also opens
opportunities. A traditional stethoscope only amplifies the sound of the heartbeat, interpretation of
this sound depends on the expertise of the doctor. A digital stethoscope with the right software can
make a detailled analysis of the heart sound and rithm and turn a novice into a heart specialist.

GENERATE A CONSTANT FLOW OF
DATA TO MONITOR YOUR HEALTH
QUANTIFIED SELF IN HEALTHCARE
The quantified self (trend where users like to track their own activity, performance, physical
status, etc.) will lead to a constant self monitoring of your physical health (e.g. glucose
level with GOOGLE + NOVARTIS Smart Lens, activity level, sleep performance, hearth
functions, etc. with JAWBONE, APPLE WATCH, etc.)
ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
OLD
“SICKCARE”
NEW
HEALTHCARE
FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE
• Investigation
• Diagnose
• Continuous monitoring
• Warning in case of
deviation (= “check
engine” light in a car)
• Try to change patients
behaviour to avoid actual
problems if possible
• Treatment
• Treatment
!
?
In the current healthcare, people wait untill a problem occurs and then vitis a doctor. He will
investigate the patient, come up with a diagnose and treatment. In the new healthcare, patients
will monitor themselves and optimise their behaviour to stay healthy & in shape. A diagnos will
be made by software analysis of the data. The doctor will only execute the treatment.

FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE
“THE PATIENT BECOMES
CEO OF HIS OWN HEALTH.”
	 Dr. Daniel Kraft, Exponential Medicine
This future for healthcare requires an active approach to manage your own health. Small sidenote: it’s
also a very liberal approach. It will probably work out very well for the active, well educated, wealthy
“elite”. But, from a more social perspective, what will happen with the others who can (affort to) manage
this just a little less? Won’t this create extra stress for the individual, wich is again, not very healthy?

DATA DRIVEN HEALTHCARE
UBIOME allows you to compare yourself with others who have a microbiome like yours. You can order a
kit that allows you to collect samples of your microbiome and send it back to their lab to be analised.
After you fill in a survey you can compare your microbiome to others with a similar profile (e.g. “vegetarians”)

ICT AS TREATMENT
OMADA HEALTH - Prevent is a 16-week online program stimulated with an app, internet connected
scale and online community, to help you change your behavior (food habits, activity level, etc.) to lose
weight and lower your risk of disease (e.g. diabetes).
ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
ICT RESEARCH TO DEVELLOP TREATMENT
BRAINFUL.COM develloped a pain relief program base on research, where pain patients, meditation experts,
etc. were placed in an MRI scanner and got live feedback of wich zones in their brain were active. They could
learn to knowingly activate those area’s in the brain that enable pain relief. The procedures they used to achieve
this, could be tought to other users without the MRI setup, resulting in a pain relief program app.

TRANSHUMANISM
= +
+
+
The combination of IT with healthcare can possibly go even further: IT could be embedded inside the
human body to expand the human capabilities. Imagine an internet connection embedded in your
brain that expands your knowledge instantly (this goes even a lot further than the evernote case).
Obviously there are many ethical questions if this becomes reality.

TRENDWATCHING.COM
1. Instant skills 2. Fast Laning
1. SeedSheet generates a sheet with seeds that will grow well in your climate, at the correct spacing, etc. You
only have to wather the plants and you can grow your own vegetables even if you know nothing about gardening.
2. Starwood, Hyatt and Hilton hotel chains allow guests enrolled in their loyalty programs to check in
via their apps and use their mobiles as room keys, in order to avoid wait lines at the front desk.
Trendwatching.com presented their “10 trends for 2015”. They have a very interesting website with more explenation and
examples for each case. Here you’ll find 1 quick example for each trend.
ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
3. Fair Splitting 4. Internet of sharing things
TRENDWATCHING.COM
3. Lyft line enables users to save money by charing their ride with other passengers traveling along a similar route.
4. Bitlock is a digital lock that allows you to rent your bike to others via an app. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
TRENDWATCHING.COM
5. Easy taxi, Dettol and the goverment of Nigeria cooperated during the ebola breakout to train taxi drivers
on how to diagnose and prevent the disease, with drivers encouraged to pass their knowledge onto passengers.
6. Consumption patterns are no longer defined by ‘traditional’ demographic segments such as age,
gender, location, income, family status and more
ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
5. Branded government 6.Post-demographicconsumerism
7. Currencies of change 8. Sympathetic pricing
TRENDWATCHING.COM
7. Fietsmodus encourages cyclists to turn of their mobile phone wile riding their bike (for safety reasons). If they
do this, they earn credits they can use to win prices. This should motivate them to change their behaviour.
8. Pare up gives an overview of about-to-expire food that’s sold for a discount in stores nearby. This gives the
consumer te opportunity to buy cheaper food & help to avoid food waist.
ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
9. Robolove 10. Brand stands
TRENDWATCHING.COM
9. Nestlé Pepper could be one of the first humanoid robots you will actually meet in 2015.
10. Pantene India made a statement by launching a campain where consumers were invited to
point out ridiculous claims made by beauty products that don’t work.

DISRUPTIVE CONCEPTS
ANDELA is an edudation program in Africa (Nigeria) that trains devellopers, who can write software
for your company. The idea is that talent & intelligence are equally spread around the globe, but
infrastructure and opportunities are not. By providing training and internet connection to talentented
people in less infrasturtured areas, we can create a huge new pool of high end devellopers.

Coursera - Online cursussen van internationale topuniversiteiten
DISRUPTIVE CONCEPTS
COURSERA offers free on line courses of all kinds of international universities (you only pay if you like to
take an exam and receive a certificate). Online education also opens new opportunities like new course
methods, peer-to-peer grading, constant evaluation of the presented courses, etc.

NOBODY CARES
IF YOU’RE A STARTUP”
James Siminoff - Ring.com
HARDWARE STARTUPS
LeWeb offers a forum to a lot of startups. Realy a lot! RING.COM CEO James Siminoff made an
interesting quote about the high expectations of todays consumers and the huge challenges this
brings for (hardware) startups.

  • 2. LeWeb is the #1 conference in Europe for digital innovation & internet-based technology. Achilles Design sent 2 designers to this conference to stay in touch with the lasted trends in software & internet, e-commerce, app development, wearable electronics, healthcare, sharing economy, etc. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 3. WHAT ARE SMART PRODUCTS? DATA IN • ENVIRONMENT (SENSORS) • USER (UI) • BIG DATA • OTHER DEVICES DATA UIT • USER (UI) • BIG DATA • OTHER DEVICES Smart products collect data from 1 or more source(s) ; process this data ; and distribute this data or the results of the processing to the user or other parties ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 4. GOAL OF SMART PRODUCTS? = ++ + Smart products aim to instantly expand the abilities of the user. Super-powers beyond the normal human capabilities; an enormous amount of knowledge and expert skills and insights are available at any time. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 5. SMART PRODUCTS EXAMPLE HEXA+ Automatisch volgende drone The HEXO+ smart drone can automatically locate itself relative to the user and alows the user to make spectaculair, (semi-) professional video’s without any special equipment. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 6. SMART PRODUCTS EXAMPLE EVERNOTE ‘CONTEXT’- Wile you are working on an Evernote document, the ‘context’ feature will recognise keywords and present related info found in your own or colleages documents, relevant articles from newspapers, etc. to expand your knowledge on the topic. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 7. SMART PRODUCTS EXAMPLE Vitality - GlowCaps VITALITY ‘GLOWCAPS’- This intelligent medicine containers reminds you to take your medicine, automatically orders refills when needed and informs doctors & relatives a report ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 8. SMART PRODUCTS EXAMPLE VITALITY ‘GLOWCAPS’- Resaerch reveals that this system improves the medication adherence dramatically, wich improves curing process. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 9. 2015? TREND 1. WEARABLES 2000 2010 Before the smartphones, ‘smart functions’ were enabled by different specific devices. Later all functionalities were implemented in 1 device (smartphone). The following years, these functionalities will be embedded in wearables. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 10. WEARABLES EXAMPLE BARCLAYCARD develloped a specific Bpay band for the supporters of Southampton FC. The band will integrate contactless payments with exclusive loyalty offers, special experiences and prize draws for supporters. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 11. WEARABLES FORRESTER.COM asked users in Europe & North America on wich parts of the body they would be interested to wear a device. This is the result. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 12. MORE THAN WEARABLES? “ENCHANTED OBJECTS” David Rose, MIT Media Lab = The word “Wearables” limits the focus mainly to clothing and accessories. That’s why David rose prefers to speak of “enchanted objects”. These are everyday object that have “magical powers” like this intelligent umbrella that can predict the rain (similar to Frodo’s sword that predicts approaching enemies in “The Lord of the Rings”). ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 13. WEARABLES CHALLENGE DATA IN • ENVIRONMENT (SENSORS) • USER (UI) • BIG DATA • OTHER DEVICES DATA UIT • USER (UI) • BIG DATA • OTHER DEVICES Smart products (& wearables) will collect a huge amount of data. One of the main challenges in the design of wearables will be to find good ways to communicate this data to, and interact with the user. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 14. WEARABLES DISPLAYS It will not only be a challenge to fit all this info on a display that is small enough to wear (like an APPLE WATCH). Not everybody will like to wear an obvious display around their wrist. Some will prefer more discrete sollutions that fits better with their outfit (like these WITHINGS & MONTBLANC examples). ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 15. NANOTECHNOLOGY INFORMATICS BIOTECHNOLOGY COGNITIVE SCIENCE TREND 2. FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE NBIC Multiple area’s in (computer) science will have a large impact on the evolution of healthcare. Healthcare will be more and more IT & data driven. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 16. “IT’ERS ARE THE DOCTORS OF THE FUTURE” Dr. Daniel Kraft, Exponential Medicine FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE ... as they will devellop the algoritms that will evaluate the collected data, compare it with big data, etc. Diagnoses will be formulated through modern data processing techniques in stead of the expertise of 1 specific doctor. The future of healthcare is data driven. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 17. vs. FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE A diagnose made by software instead of a doctor may sound a little scary, but it also opens opportunities. A traditional stethoscope only amplifies the sound of the heartbeat, interpretation of this sound depends on the expertise of the doctor. A digital stethoscope with the right software can make a detailled analysis of the heart sound and rithm and turn a novice into a heart specialist. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 18. GENERATE A CONSTANT FLOW OF DATA TO MONITOR YOUR HEALTH QUANTIFIED SELF IN HEALTHCARE The quantified self (trend where users like to track their own activity, performance, physical status, etc.) will lead to a constant self monitoring of your physical health (e.g. glucose level with GOOGLE + NOVARTIS Smart Lens, activity level, sleep performance, hearth functions, etc. with JAWBONE, APPLE WATCH, etc.) ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 19. OLD “SICKCARE” NEW HEALTHCARE FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE • Investigation • Diagnose • Continuous monitoring • Warning in case of deviation (= “check engine” light in a car) • Try to change patients behaviour to avoid actual problems if possible • Treatment • Treatment ! ? In the current healthcare, people wait untill a problem occurs and then vitis a doctor. He will investigate the patient, come up with a diagnose and treatment. In the new healthcare, patients will monitor themselves and optimise their behaviour to stay healthy & in shape. A diagnos will be made by software analysis of the data. The doctor will only execute the treatment. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 20. FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE “THE PATIENT BECOMES CEO OF HIS OWN HEALTH.” Dr. Daniel Kraft, Exponential Medicine This future for healthcare requires an active approach to manage your own health. Small sidenote: it’s also a very liberal approach. It will probably work out very well for the active, well educated, wealthy “elite”. But, from a more social perspective, what will happen with the others who can (affort to) manage this just a little less? Won’t this create extra stress for the individual, wich is again, not very healthy? ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 21. DATA DRIVEN HEALTHCARE UBIOME allows you to compare yourself with others who have a microbiome like yours. You can order a kit that allows you to collect samples of your microbiome and send it back to their lab to be analised. After you fill in a survey you can compare your microbiome to others with a similar profile (e.g. “vegetarians”) ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 22. ICT AS TREATMENT OMADA HEALTH - Prevent is a 16-week online program stimulated with an app, internet connected scale and online community, to help you change your behavior (food habits, activity level, etc.) to lose weight and lower your risk of disease (e.g. diabetes). ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 23. ICT RESEARCH TO DEVELLOP TREATMENT BRAINFUL.COM develloped a pain relief program base on research, where pain patients, meditation experts, etc. were placed in an MRI scanner and got live feedback of wich zones in their brain were active. They could learn to knowingly activate those area’s in the brain that enable pain relief. The procedures they used to achieve this, could be tought to other users without the MRI setup, resulting in a pain relief program app. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 24. TRANSHUMANISM = + + + The combination of IT with healthcare can possibly go even further: IT could be embedded inside the human body to expand the human capabilities. Imagine an internet connection embedded in your brain that expands your knowledge instantly (this goes even a lot further than the evernote case). Obviously there are many ethical questions if this becomes reality. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 25. TRENDWATCHING.COM 1. Instant skills 2. Fast Laning 1. SeedSheet generates a sheet with seeds that will grow well in your climate, at the correct spacing, etc. You only have to wather the plants and you can grow your own vegetables even if you know nothing about gardening. 2. Starwood, Hyatt and Hilton hotel chains allow guests enrolled in their loyalty programs to check in via their apps and use their mobiles as room keys, in order to avoid wait lines at the front desk. Trendwatching.com presented their “10 trends for 2015”. They have a very interesting website with more explenation and examples for each case. Here you’ll find 1 quick example for each trend. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 26. 3. Fair Splitting 4. Internet of sharing things TRENDWATCHING.COM 3. Lyft line enables users to save money by charing their ride with other passengers traveling along a similar route. 4. Bitlock is a digital lock that allows you to rent your bike to others via an app. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 27. TRENDWATCHING.COM 5. Easy taxi, Dettol and the goverment of Nigeria cooperated during the ebola breakout to train taxi drivers on how to diagnose and prevent the disease, with drivers encouraged to pass their knowledge onto passengers. 6. Consumption patterns are no longer defined by ‘traditional’ demographic segments such as age, gender, location, income, family status and more ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved 5. Branded government 6.Post-demographicconsumerism
  • 28. 7. Currencies of change 8. Sympathetic pricing TRENDWATCHING.COM 7. Fietsmodus encourages cyclists to turn of their mobile phone wile riding their bike (for safety reasons). If they do this, they earn credits they can use to win prices. This should motivate them to change their behaviour. 8. Pare up gives an overview of about-to-expire food that’s sold for a discount in stores nearby. This gives the consumer te opportunity to buy cheaper food & help to avoid food waist. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 29. 9. Robolove 10. Brand stands TRENDWATCHING.COM 9. Nestlé Pepper could be one of the first humanoid robots you will actually meet in 2015. 10. Pantene India made a statement by launching a campain where consumers were invited to point out ridiculous claims made by beauty products that don’t work. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 30. DISRUPTIVE CONCEPTS ANDELA is an edudation program in Africa (Nigeria) that trains devellopers, who can write software for your company. The idea is that talent & intelligence are equally spread around the globe, but infrastructure and opportunities are not. By providing training and internet connection to talentented people in less infrasturtured areas, we can create a huge new pool of high end devellopers. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 31. Coursera - Online cursussen van internationale topuniversiteiten DISRUPTIVE CONCEPTS COURSERA offers free on line courses of all kinds of international universities (you only pay if you like to take an exam and receive a certificate). RING.COM CEO James Siminoff made an interesting quote about the high expectations of todays consumers and the huge challenges this brings for (hardware) startups. ACHILLES DESIGN © All rights reserved
  • 33. Jukedeck - Automatisch gegenereerde unieke muziek. They created a website that can automatically generate unique (and royalty free) music tracks, based on a number of charasteristics (genre, tempo, track length, etc.).
