Minsk is the capital city of Belarus located on the Svisloch river. It has a long history and features wide streets, modern architecture, green parks, and some historic churches. The main street is called The Prospect of Independence, which crosses the city and connects four main squares: Independence Square, Central Square, Victory Square, and Yakub Kolas Square. Important landmarks along this street include the Government House in Independence Square and a monument in Victory Square honoring heroes of World War II. Yakub Kolas Square is named after a famous Belarusian poet. There are also three beautiful parks along The Prospect of Independence.
